Hall-a! From Albuquerque, NM.

   Hello all on this site,

My name is Johnny from Albuquerque, NM.  I'm 46 years old and have been on dialysis for 2 years and 10months.   I'm having treatment at Fresenius Medical Care which is the other one from UNM dialysis center.    I will be transfer to another closer facility in two weeks.  I have a fistula and doing button holes not on the blunt needles yet.    It's ok, but sometimes I hate going to dialysis for treatment and I've missed several treatments.   It's just tough to get motivated and go to a depressing center where you see other old people hopeless in trying to do better for themselves.    I work as a teacher in an elementary school and somedays it gets triring at times where I have to have a day off.  It's great that my boss understands.   I love to hike, garden, swim, do projects, and see movies.   I really don't talk to anyone at the dialysis center or that is no one that is on the treatment the same time.  I just don't like to hear how depress they are.  I do talk to a tech that we are getting close, but I jsut donlt like getting too close to the techs.   I'll be on and and looking at this site for anwsers to some of question that come up during this time.     I may evening ask some questions as well.

It's great that you joined and I hope that you will stay in touch.  You were so straight and honest about your feelings and you are no different than many other and that is why we joined IHD and share our concerns and suggestions.

   Johnny.  It's definitely a tough road we're on but one thing about this site is it really reinforces that we're not alone and that coping is indeed possible.  I hate hearing the horror stories about some of the units because mine is good and it makes such an enormous difference for us patients.

Hello Zach,  Thank you.  You must be amazing to last this long, 26 years. Wow!  Are you doing button holes?  Way is it so long before you get a transplant?  I can't even be on the list due to them saying that I'm prone to infection?  I just don't get it.  how do you keep your spirits up going to the center?  Have you ever thought of home dialysis?

Thanks everyone for giving me a warm welcome.  This made me feel better that I'm not the only one out here.   I get really confussed at times when I'm at the center in my treatment.   I'm from a small town up in Clovis, NM.  where I was raised there.  I went to Tucson, AZ.  for my last kidney opreration on hydronerphersis and then that is where it started to have my kidneys start to downgrade slowly.  It took 30years before they told me that my kidneys are doing bad and I would have to start kidney dialysis soon.  It's been  almost 3years since I've been on the hemo- dialysis.   
 I'm not married and no children.  I usually am working on my house and when I feel ok I go to the gym and take a swim.   That is only if I'm up for it.  I travel 4.5 miles to get to the center for my treatment.

The depression from other patients can seem contagious some times, but if you talk to patients who share your time slot you'll undoubtedly find some who smile and even laugh through their troubles. And sometimes it just helps to talk about the very real reasons we're depressed.
