Post by: southyard on September 10, 2008, 09:21:40 PM: I have been trying to intro myself without any luck. My putor savvy leaves a lot to be desired

When I was told my kidneys were failing I hit a low point Being I always stated I would not be a nursing home patient I seen this as a bad step. I thought of ways to end it allnow after 4 weeks of it I still think of ways out. Being 84 years old I have lived my life and dont want to be a drag on my wife and family.

Post by: flip on September 10, 2008, 09:34:20 PM: For what it's worth....one ofmy best friends at dialysis is 88 and going strong. She actually skips every Saturday and shows no ill effects. She still lives at home but her granddaughter does drive her to and from dialysis. She's a tough old bird and I'm sure you are too.

When I was at dialysis today, I noticed the gentleman who is usually in the chair next to mine, was not there. When I inquired about him, I found out he was on a cruise. I only mention this because he is 95!

My dad was diagnosed with kidney failure at 89 and because in my country they don't dialyse "old" people, he was just allowed to leave us. He was so alert and alive, and had things he still wanted to say (he was an retired educator, and minister of religion). He was in very good health, except for his kidneys. Our family doctor cried because the nephs did not put him on dialysis. We (our family) still feel that we were robbed. You might be tired of the whole thing, but I bet your family isn't.
anyway, we have lots going on at this site that you will find interesting. So read a lot and post a lot. You have much to say to us, I am sure.

Isn't there an old saying "I didn't want to live until 90 until I turned 89"? We all want one more day. You will have good days ahead. Your family wants you and there are stilll many lessons and stories you need to give them. It is really hard to hear when they tell you your kidneys are failing. Bajanne, my neph told me stories like your father's and it was an eye opener. I am so sorry your family was put thru this. Your father must have been a special man.

It's not a pleasant event that brings us all together, but I hope you find the compassion and understanding that you need here.

Being over 80 is a becoming more usual in this modern world. You are somewhat of a pioneer. I hope you find time to share with us so we can learn from you. Likewise, I hope we can help as you deal with kidney failure.

As I had promised one of my Drs when first I expressed my feeling I will give it a fair trial period. This to be 6 months. Today was the end of my 1st month of dialysis. Alls well thus far . Today marked a week at my present clinic. I have spent time with the dietician and social worker and the head nurse. I have learned some new trhings. On the 29th of Sept I will meet with the surgeon regarding installing a fistula Mine will be in my left arm .exact lopcation unknown. What I have researched an seen has given me some insight about same. The actual direct chat will allow me to find out more and just how it will work for me. .

I am still making some urine and wear depends to allow for the leakage etc. At time this is a large quantity and other days none. Been told this is a norm or as close to normal as I will get

I am still trying to sort this all out. My 3 hour sessions on dialysis have not been to hard to take INy sessions being at 6:30 AM does leave a good portion of the day for other things. It did not change my rise time as that has been 5 AM when the dog tells me she wants out. Then its breakfast( the main meal for me) and I am off. Surprisingly the clinic already has 8 patients seated and running. more later

I know what you mean. Just goes to show we nearly always worry about the things that don't happen.
I thought of alot of things that might happen to me but NEVER kidney failure. I try to keep myself occupied
with other things besides my health, like politics (lol) and religion (roflol). This board thinks I am a scewly old
lady, but that is alright, I'm too old to worry about what people think of me. I know who I am and what I believe,
and I try to stay on Gods side.

I guss it time I added more about myself, I am he last in my family thats a full blooded BOHEMIAN. Grands and/or great grands came fom Bohemia.

I have been called honky, bohunk, gypsy bohemian jew amongst others during my life time. None of these ever got under my skin tho. I have been married 3 times the last since 9/6/1969 a very good marraige SHe is taking all this in stride(at least on the outside)but I know she is not 100% happy with it. She shows it when we talk of things we used to do.

Number 2 wife was taken from me by the LORD#1 decided that a close friend was more appealing even to the fact she broke up his home. He could not get a divorice being catholic and she had trerminal cancer. They wedded and both passed on in 1968 3 weeks apart

Each wife gave me a child 2 daughters and a son. All 3 know my feelings and future and will abide by what I do. After this thanksgiving my 85th BD I will make my final decision. Dont know yet what it will be but it will be permenant

Its not that I am brave, but realize what I desire out of life and can no longer attain. My need for dailysis was one big kick in the butt. It was one thing I never thought I would be involved in. I was the strong on

about 25-30 years ago Honky was a favorite sying for the colored folk One day on the job the colored laborer called me a HONKY. I came down off the ladder and asked to shake his hand for knowing I was a Bohemian. We had a very good chat about it and he stated he never had heard of the nationality. He was not a very literate peron and I explained that maybe he should take some classes to understand where the various terms came from.. On my last job he was the laborer foreman. He said what I told him changed his life. He needed more than a GED to move on. We all need to be prodded at one time or other

I personally would not have gotten to where I am had I not been forced to listen to my mother. SHe would not let me quit school, and during those years we listened and obeyed parents
