Title: What's Behind The "Name"??
Post by: Rerun on May 30, 2006, 09:47:52 PM
I'm just curious about the user names on this site.  What's the story?

Rerun - This is how I felt going back on dialysis again, and I didn't know how to spell DaJavou!  A Rerun for those too young to know is the replay of a TV show.  You see Reruns again and again and again.   8)

Kitkatz is from part of my name. I think it used to be a nickname years and years ago.  I added a z so it would work as an unusual name and computer sites would not give me a hassle.

My name kinda comes from 3 places.  The first is that some people say I remind them of Allen Alda during his M*A*S*H years, always the comedian.  The the second is my fondness of archery, so it ties in with the comic book character Hawkeye who only uses the bow and arrow.  The third is from my love of the birds of prey.  I could sit around and watch the hawks and eagles fly all day long.  Because of these three things I use Hawkeye or some variation as my name for most games I play and chat groups I belong to.

Rerun, I thought your name meant you just liked to have a go at me, then Rerun to the beginning and start again, having another go at me ;D

KEVNO

KEV: Name

NO: Well a few years ago that would have been YES. I used to say yes to anything a Doctor, Consultant or Surgeon said. Now I question whatever the say, plus now usually say NO. I suppose when I first went on the machine in early 77 I had no choice, only being ten years old. Now I have a say, so they get what I think, some don't like it. So what :-\

People from my country are Barbadians, and our nickname is Bajan (rhymes with 'Cajun).  As a French teacher, I know that you make things feminine by doubling the 'n' and adding an 'e', like Canadien (male) and Canadienne (female).  So my name means I am a female Bajan.

I love to ride rerun!  That was a friends horse in Tahoe i took for a ride.  I used to have a quarter horse but boarding got too expensive and I don't have the land!  That was a great horse but it tried to kick the horse behind me all the time so I got out in front and he just took off!  It was great!  Went to the top of the mountain to see the best view of the lake ever!  Getting down was a bit tough though I am used to flat land here in Florida there were lots of steep slopes and rocks and trees made for a fun day!
cheers Geoff

"NK" stands for my high school, "viking" was our sports teams' name (lots of Norwegian descendants around here), and '75 was the year of my graduation.  It's odd that I chose that, because I'd just as soon forget most of my high school years.  It's easy for me to remember.

Elmo because I laugh alot and tubes because I had the peritoneal catheter.

Thank God Tubes won.  :2thumbsup;

Now that I'm 26. I don't think I would like my friends calling out, "Hey Elmo"...when we're out in public somewhere.  :-[

Post by: Stacy Without An E on October 20, 2006, 01:20:46 PM
"Stacy Without An E" comes with a huge messy side order of "duh" as far as name origination, but there are a couple minute stories involved with its creation.

As a member of the "Stacy Community" everywhere I travel, people want to place an extra vowel in my name to give it a more feminine leaning.

I just double checked and I'm still a dude, so that is infuriating.

My favorite is when I go to purchase something, and this just happened AGAIN at the mall this past week, the sales clerk, in an effort to be thorough, innocently asks, "Is this your wife's card?"

I bust out with the ID like an FBI agent collaring a criminal.

They always smile and apologize, but no one truly understand the rules of Stacy:

"Stacy" is the male spelling, plain and simple.

"Stacey", "Staci", "Stacee", "Stacy See" and "Stacy (with a silent x)" are all the female spelling.

Before I was born, my father was a huge fan of Stacy Adams shoes, so he decided to continue the history of the name.

I'm not Nike.  I'm not Reebox.  My name is Stacy Without An E and I wouldn't have it any other way.

Don't worry Stacy. I have never known anyone by that name .. girl or boy personally .. but my brother Lonnie can really relate. When he was younger people used to tease him and call him Loni Anderson.

Now however he is proud of his name. Unlike my mom who goes by her middle name instead.

Good to hear from you again, Stacy without an e!  I have similar problems at stores and on the phone.  Many try to add an extra 'd', changing my gender also, from Edie to Eddie... Frustrating, to say the least- but sometimes comical when they ask for 'Eddie' on the phone and I tell them no one by that name lives here!  I get out of several telemarketing calls that way.  Got to get some perks with an unusual name.

When I worked as a CAD drafter at an architectural firm, I had a coworker who always said "use your bean" instead of "use your head".  Our boss at the time was smart, but very disorganized and so flaky that everyone teased him that he'd lose his head if it wasn't attached.  I spent most of my time keeping him organized.  In the middle of a project, when I was tracking down something he'd forgotten, my coworker told him to use his bean to figure it out.  He pointed at me and said that he was.  I've been stuck with "Bean" since then.  My initials are JY, so jbeany it is.

Back before Windows95, a filename could only be 8 characters.  When I first got email, I had to drop the "s" from the end of my name, Bill Ables.  It was years before I realized that I was actually spelling a word as in billable hours.

I agree, Sluff, great name.

Mine comes from a person I admire, George Mallory.  He died in 1924, while he was on Mt. Everest.  No one knows if he was able to reach the summit or if he died in the attempt.  Personally, I want to believe that he did make it and that he died on the descent.  Here's a quote from him that I really like:

"The first question which you will ask and which I must try to answer is this, 'What is the use of climbing Mount Everest ?' and my answer must at once be, 'It is no use'. There is not the slightest prospect of any gain whatsoever. Oh, we may learn a little about the behavior of the human body at high altitudes, and possibly medical men may turn our observation to some account for the purposes of aviation. But otherwise nothing will come of it. We shall not bring back a single bit of gold or silver, not a gem, nor any coal or iron. We shall not find a single foot of earth that can be planted with crops to raise food. It's no use. So, if you cannot understand that there is something in man which responds to the challenge of this mountain and goes out to meet it, that the struggle is the struggle of life itself upward and forever upward, then you won't see why we go. What we get from this adventure is just sheer joy. And joy is, after all, the end of life. We do not live to eat and make money. We eat and make money to be able to enjoy life. That is what life means and what life is for."

Now, how can you not admire that?  I think he was a great adventurer and that's why I use the name Mallory.

Remids me of another saying:

I read that after my Transplant.

By the way, I was not born at Christmas, although I think I should get a discount on everything I buy between Thanksgiving Day and Dec. 25.  :)  And as my reward/revenge, I  can be assured everyone will remember my name at least once a year!  >:D

My name is Karol - with a 'K'
yep - just like the prior Pope.

It's always spelled wrong but never mispronounced!

When I first got email in 1999 I was gonna use karolwithak - but it was taken!

When I was a kid people used to sing a song to me. So I thought of
Oh Karol - but shortened it.

Here's the song:

Carol Lyrics
by Rolling Stones

Oh, Carol
Don't let 'em steal your heart away
Well I'm gonna learn to dance if it takes me all night and day

Climb into my machine so we can groove on out
I know a swinging little joint we can jump and shout
It takes you far back off the highway not so long a ride
You park your car out in the open you can walk inside
A little cutie takes your hat and you can thank her ma'am
'Cause every time you make the scene you find the joint is jammed

Oh Carol
Don't let 'em steal your heart away
Well I'm gonna learn to dance if it takes me all night and day

Yeah if you want to hear some boogie like the boys'll play
Hol' tight pat your foot don' let it carry you 'way
Don't let the heat overcome you when they play so loud
Yeah, don't the music intrigue you when they get a crowd
Yeah now you can't dance I know you would 'f you could
I got my eyes on you sugar cause you dance so good

Oh Carol
Don't let 'em steal your heart away
Why I'm gonna learn to dance if it takes me all night and day

Don't let her steal your heart away
Why I got to learn to dance if it takes me all night and day

Well, I have been online...about 17 years now...and I have had dozens of names...here are a few:

The Church Lady, The Naughty Girl (shortened to Naw-tee eventually), Enigma, Amberose, Honey Pot...

One day I wasn't feeling particularly "treasured" so I called myself Treasure...and came  up wth the sappy signature, "The treasure you seek is within yourself..."

Paris -- it is the place I most want to be. Love being there - and now when days are bad, I go there in my mind--sitting by the Seine, walking through the Orsay, eating crepes in the shadow of the Eiffel Tower, mass at Notre Dame, walking throught the tiny streets of St. Michael, eating little pastries on the Champs. I wanted my youngest daughter (23) to experience Paris so much, so I took her last year and she fell in love with a Frenchman while we were there!  They are still visiting and corresponding with each other- you just have to love Paris.    Now before you get the wrong idea --my husband has worked for the airlines for 38 years and the best benefit is flying free!  Not great pay, but we have had a chance to explore the world around us. I hate that this disease may slow down our traveling now that my husband is retirement age. I want to get in a few more trips, but it really is hard now. Just don't have the strength and energy.  Long explanation!!!  Check out my email address sometime -- I do love Paris!

Paris -- it is the place I most want to be. I know the feeling Paris but at least you had the opportunity to visit there. I know it's kind of like a consolation prize but for what it's worth I'm too tired to enjoy my passion of riding my motorcycle sometimes too. I get too cold in the fall to ride where I used to ride no matter the weather, I live in Wisconsin and i used to ride year round. Thanks for sharing your feelings, and now we know the story behind the name. You described your love  of Paris very well.

I can't say I LOVE Paris, but I love France!  I am a small island person, and though I love to visit big cities, I can't say I love them.  GIve me little country towns where you can still chat with the little lady in the épicerie (grocery), and the guy in the boulangerie (bakery), and you can walk along the river at any hour without worrying about your safety, and the only scare is a guy flashing from an upstairs apartment!

I'm regretting how I named myself here.  Certainly last year was the 30th anniversary of my first dialysis but its not so anymore this year.  I'm wondering whether i should change screenname every year or just leave it and then change to renal40yrs in 2016.

I just read one or two posts and joined the site  straight away without noticing that people were using tag names. so that's why my own name appears. Should I change my name to a tag? I must say after I introduced myself on the site I did begin to feel a bit of a plonker when I noticed I was the only one useing my normal full name. :-[

Well I think people use "handles" or "tags" as you said for security reasons. You don't know what kind of wierdos will stalk you ;)

You Know You're from New Jersey When...

...you recognize or can relate to at least 10 of these:

You've been seriously injured at Action Park.
You know that the only people who call it "Joisey" are from New York (usually The Bronx) or Texas.
You don't think of citrus when people mention "The Oranges."
You know that it's called "Great Adventure," not "Six Flags."
You've ordered a hard roll with butter for breakfast.
You've known the way to Seaside Heights since you were seven.
You've eaten at a diner, when you were stoned or drunk, at 3 am.
Whenever you park, there's a Camaro within three spots of you.
You remember that the "Two Guys" were from Harrison.
You know that the state isn't one big oil refinery.
At least three people in your family still love Bruce Springsteen, and you know what town Jon Bon Jovi is from.
You know what a "jug handle" is.
You know that a WaWa is a convenience store.
You know that the state isn't all farmland.
You know that there are no "beaches" in new Jersey - there's "The Shore," and you know that the road to the shore is "The Parkway" not "The Garden State Highway."
You know that "Piney" isn't referring to a tree.
Even your school cafeteria made good Italian subs, and, you call it a "sub" not a "submarine sandwich" or worse yet, a "hoagy" or a "hero."
You remember the song from the Palisades Park commercials.
You know how to properly negotiate a Circle.
You knew that the last question had to do with driving.
You know that "Acme" is an actual store, not just a Warner Bros creation.
You know that this is the only "New..." state that doesn't require "New" to identify it (like, try ...Mexico, ...York, ...Hampshire (doesn't work, does it?).
You know how to translate this conversation: "Jeet yet?" "No, Jew?"
You only go to New York City for day trips, and you only call it "The City."
You know that a "White Castle" is the name of BOTH a fast food chain AND a fast food sandwich.
You consider a corned beef sandwich with lettuce and mayo a sacrilege.
In the 80's you wore your hair REALLY high.
You don't think "What exit" (do you live near?) is very funny.
You know that the real first "strip shopping center" in the country is Route 22.
You know that people from 609 area code are "a little different."
You know that no respectable New Jerseyan goes to Princeton - that's for out-of-staters.
The Jets-Giants game has started fights at your school or local bar.
You live within 20 minutes of at least three different malls.
You can see the Manhattan skyline from some part of your town.
You refer to all highways and interstates by their numbers.
Every year, you had at least one kid in your class named Tony.
You know where every "clip" shown in the Sopranos opening credits is.
You've gotten on the wrong highway trying to get out of Willowbrook Mall.
You've eaten a Boardwalk cheesesteak with vinegar fries.
You have a favorite Atlantic City casino.
You start planning for Memorial Day weekend in February.
And finally...
You've never pumped your own gas.

What is it with Jersey and diners?  I dated a Jersey boy in college, and as soon as he got close to home, he had to stop at the Lido to eat.  I went out to visit him, and we must have eaten there at least once a day, every day, for the whole trip!

No, No, No -- not the frozen White Castle -- that is just wrong. They have to be hot and steamy, dripping with the onions they have been cooking in.  And you have to buy a bagful -- not just a couple. They are best at 2 in the morning!

Don't get me wrong the best way hands down is fresh off the grill at a White Castle, but if you don't have one nearby the frozen ones would do during a White Castle jones.

I have at least 5 diners in a 5 mile radius from my home.  Some are real greasy spoons and some have really good food.
There's a diner The Park West that has healthy foods on the menu, sandwich wraps, huge salads, really good hearty food.
All the diners are owned by Greeks, too.  My sister married into a family who owned and operated diners in NJ and they're all related or know each other very well.

Homey!!!

I got a 30  :2thumbsup;

I was born in Newark, grew up in Bloomfield, and as an adult lived in S.Orange, E.Orange, and then Orange before heading out. I had no exit on the Jersey Turnpike. My parents Christmas shopped at Two Guys and  took us down the shore (the Garden State Parkway was a parking lot on summer weekends and the water was so cold on Memorial Day!). My friends and I hung out at Willowbrook Mall as adolescents and the headed for the city as we go older - what an adventure, my first Star Trek convention in midtown Manhatten!!! And then we learned how to drive - traffic circles! As I remember, they were on Rt 22 and they were not fun for beginning drivers. We'd do whatever we were doing and then stop off at some diner or at White Castle (the burgers each had 5 little holes in them to allow the juices and the onions to circulate freely) or perhaps a stop at the Star Tavern for the best tasting, oiliest little pizza you could ever want to eat (an Orange NJ tradition along with Jimmy Buff's Italian Hot Dogs) before going home. And for breakfast a coffee (back then it was light and sweet) and a Taylor Ham Sandwich! Yum!!!

And, it was the ultimate culture shock when I headed down south and actually had to pump my own gas. I feel so spoiled when I travel back there and someone, frequently a cute young guy in a guinea tee, comes out and pumps it for me.

Thanks for the trip back in time.
 :clap;

My first online experiences were with Compuserve in the early 80's.  I had to come up with a handle but had  no idea what to use. I was working as an engineer/ENG truck operator for a television station in Sacramento.  Our remote ENG presence was known as "Livecamera 3" so thats where livecam came from.

I've been using it ever since in one form or another.  It is a pretty old handle going back now almost 25 years.

paddbear0000 = paddbear after my lab, Paddington Bear, 0000 is because every time I start getting hit hard with spam in my e-mail, I have to get a new address. So I just add another zero. I'm up to 4 now and about to add a fifth! Perhaps, I'll find a new name (if there's any left)! I use this any time I need a username. I've been using it for years and can remember it.

Thanks!  Of course my dad is also the one who named all of us girls with names beginning with a K.  I have three younger sisters named Kari, Kelli and Karla.  lol

Krisna, you lucked out with the pretty name that is also unique, in the western world! I think it's a pretty name too, it rolls off the tongue very smoothly.

PaddBear, I loved Paddington Bear!!! I still do, come to think of it. SUCH a sweetheart!! And Babar...remember him??

I remember Babar.  I love Paddington Bear too!  I have always loved my name!  It's not one that is easily forgotten!  My dad had friends who had named their daughter Krisna so that was how he first heard of it.  lol

When I named my daughter, I had never heard her name before... so I thought I was being original.. but now I hear it alot.. dang!!! Oh well, I still spell it my own way, so that's a plus!

BTW her name is Aryianna. Pronounced (Ar-E-ah-na).

Yeah! I had a stuffed Babar that came with a book! I noticed it's on Saturday mornings (I have DirecTv, and off-hand, I can't remember if it's a DirecTv, cable or regular channel).

basically, ive died and came back to life on a few occasions. ive even been marked for death by dr.'s. parents were told that i would be brain dead. (i may be crazy, but i aint brain dead! lol)i am a living testmony for taking "for life as it comes". i am alive by mere miracles! and for me to be as healthy and active as i am...God IS good. lots of ppl say...i dont know how you deal with all that. truth is,i dont know either except by having a strong support system around me and by the grace of God. i believe that i am here on this earth to help/save others (seems sometimes at MY own expense). i feel like im Gods lil angel. and with all that being said you have....MYRICLE CHILD!

My user name is the name of my beloved 14 year old cat, Sunny, who was diagnosed with kidney disease last year. The vet gave her only a few months to live. She and I are survivors and we have both proven our doctors wrong. She likes to sit next to me while I surf the internet.

Mon rein means my kidney in french. Since I taught french at university for my first career and since I live in an allegedly bilingual country (Canada) I came up with monrein.  I usually try to choose a name that has a connection to the site in question so on a gardening forum my name is blacknails for example but people here might think that was some rare side effect of CKD.  I'd hate to cause anyone to panic.  :)

In Greek Pelagia means “of the sea," which is why I chose the name since I have spent my entire life enjoying or studying oceans, bays and estuaries.

Interestingly, there are at least two Saint Pelagias - one was a virgin and legend has it that the other started out as a prostitute and was later converted.  But, I am definitely not a saint.  Perhaps there is still time...   :rofl;

When my kids were little, (there all grown now), I used to say, with anger"just look at my face" whenever they had done something wrong.  They knew I was pissed.  I said it one time to my youngest, and he was only 4, we had just watched "one flew over the Cookoos Nest".  He said "you look like NuresWratchet" !  I was not a nurse at the time, but it stuck ever since...  :cheer:

Set up the computer in January.

Looking out the window,

I just took off the 2000 from my name recently.  Although I have already explained, I will do so again.  I am from Barbados and our nickname is Bajan (from Barbadian).  It is pronounced like Cajun.  I am a French teacher and in French when something ends in 'n', the female form is 'nne'.  So I am a female Bajan - Bajanne. (Bay-Jane)
Most people in IHD thing of me as Baja-Anne! I can live with that - it is cute.

Hmmm.

Back in the 80s, I was a bass player in a few heavy metal bands.  (glam/hair metal)  Given that that pays well for only a very few, I had a day job in a bar to support myself.  When people would talk about me by name when I wasn't around, people who didn't know my name would usually say "Oh, yeah, she's the little rocker, right?"
