Hello everyone,
My name is Noel and I'm new to this board & thought I introduce myself. I am a new dialysis patient as of Jan 08. I was diagnosed back in 2002 of having Polycystic Kidney Disease. I'm 41 yrs. old and currently residing in California. For the past six yrs, I've been fighting pretty hard to avoid going on dialysis till my body finally gave up & told me to stop fighting. The last three months before I started dialysis was the worst feeling in my life. I lost lots of weight due to a loss of appetite. Uncontrollable vomiting along with naseau. But now that I have started my hemodialysis, I feel much, much better than the way I was feeling the past six yrs. I'm currently going 3 times a week for 3 hours. Since starting dialysis, I have given up alot of my life. I'm about to resign my position as a police officer for the past 5 yrs. I also, ended my 18 yr career in the Army & in the reserves. Those were two careers that I will miss tremendously. My finances has gone down since I am now receiving only disability pay. I'm about to lose my health benefits in June. Even though I am in tough situation, I have kept my spirits up. There is no way I will let this disease put me or my family down. I have a great support group from my family, dialysis unit, & friends. Now, I have found a great site where people understands me with what I am going thru & where I could understand them also. I am currently been tested for a possible kidney transplant. From what the transplant coordinator has told me, that I am a perfect candidate for their kidney program. But, since I don't have an immediate donor, I guess I will be waiting for 3-5 yrs till I am next on the list. In the mean time, I will pursue another career and start going to school. I've been doing alot of thinking of what to do with my future while sitting or laying on my chair being dialyzed. But Lord willing, I do hope I will get a transplant soon and get a second chance in life.

Welcome Noel,
I started Dialysis in January 2007, so I think that I have a pretty recent memory of how terrible it feels. I can tell you that it does get better. Even when I was in center, it took a few months for my body to adjust to the treatments (I'm now doing home hemo on NxStage). Let alone the impact that this has had on your work and mental status. I was deeply depressed for the first six or seven months, then slowly, my spark started to return. It is a slow path, but you are not alone.
IHD is a huge support for so many people - we are all in this together- Dialysis veterans and newbies. Welcome aboard.
Best Wishes,
Anna

:waving; Noel. Beautiful name. My mom is pre-dialysis and will be doing hemo when the time comes. She is holding at 16% GFR.
I have family in law enforcement and it is definitely not just a job - it is your family as well. Bonds are tight in the military and police force. Thanks for making your career one that helps us all. :thx;
