Post by: rimbo74 on June 19, 2007, 12:47:32 PM
My brother and I will be going to Baylor Hospital of Dallas on July 31st for the transplant.  I'm AB+ and he is A+.  We have a 3 out of 6 match.

Its been a hassle dealing with the coordinators but we finally got the date!   :yahoo;

No problem about being late.  I'm so excited but now that its only a couple of weeks away, I'm starting to get really nervous about the surgery.  Not sure, but I haven't been able to see at night very well.
Title: Re: The date has been set
Post by: Falkenbach on July 16, 2007, 02:03:00 AM
Did you mean "sleep" at night?  :)

I was pretty relaxed right up until the day of my tx, then I started to get butterflies in my stomach. It'll all be over so soon, you'll do plenty of sleeping afterwards!

Have you thought about trying some stretching/ pilates/ yoga or something like that to help with relaxation before bed? Oh, and perhaps keep things like caffeine to a minimum, so it can't make you too jittery.

Wishing you all the best. I'm almost 7 weeks post-tx now, so if you have any questions, it's all still quite fresh in my memory!

Congratulations Rimbo, only just saw this thread, it's a wonder it makes you think what you can easily miss around this place. Hope the butterflies don't annoy you too much, but hey its all good.

Good Luck!

Wow - two weeks to go!

Stay healthy, wash your hands a lot and avoid sick people now!

Thinking of your bro - here are some tips for preparing for and recovering from surgery, written by a living donor: go to--> http://www.livingdonorsonline.org/SurgeryTips.html

I'll second what okarol says, avoid sick people!

For my final two weeks pre-op, I even stayed home. I'm not suggesting you put yourself into a little bubble, it's entirely your choice what you do. But I stayed home to avoid infection. Instead of going to my weekly trivia at the local pub, for example, I would stay home. I figured there was plenty of time for trivia later! It's winter here right now, so I didn't want to be going out in the dark and cold, and breathing in other people's cigarette smoke and all.

Put simply, take care of yourself the best you can.

Post by: rimbo74 on July 17, 2007, 12:07:18 PM
Ha-ha!  I thought about putting myself into a bubble until my surgery but I have since decided against it.  I am working from home which my exposure to other people is not very often now.  A problem that I have ran into is I have allergies right now so I'm trying really hard for it not turn into a sinus infection.  My 4 year old daughter has the sniffles too so we are just hugging now.  I only see here Tuesday, Thursday, and every other weekend so I'm not going to skip the visit  ;D.

Thanks for all the well wishes.  I'm starting to get a lot of anxiety about it, both grateful and nervous.  The 31st can not get here sooner!   :2thumbsup;

Congrats!  Hope all goes well for you and your brother.  I'm from Dallas originally  - my high school use to be next to Baylor (before they knocked it down a few years ago).  I live in the sticks now and miss the transplant team I had in Dallas.  I thought they were a pain in the kicker then, but I miss them now.

Keep us posted!

It's me!  Just got out of the hospital this afternoon.  I ended up getting the Chief of Transplant for my surgery, how awesome is that!!  Things went really well.  I didn't suffer very much and Baylor ICU rocks.  The surgery from what I hear lasted about 2 1/2 hours.  I was in ICU for one full day then went up to my normal room.  With me taking steriods now, I have to give myself insulin shots because my blood sugar is running high.  They think this will go away after a couple of weeks.

The day before my surgery my creatinine was 6.9.  A couple of hours after the surgery it had dropped to 5.5 and by the next morning it was down to 3.1.  As of today its at 1.4!!  My surgery site is still really sore but I feel great.  Thanks for everybody's support!!

Don't worry, I love this forum.  Everybody here knows how one another feels or is going through.

Since they are reducing Predinisone down to 20mg a day now, I think I won't be on insulin very much longer.  Today I have had normal readings until this evening but this evening it was still barely over at 122.

I will keep posting information.  For those that are interested in Baylor, send me a message with your questions.  I will happily answer any questions you have.

As they reduce the prednisone, you may get over that urge to eat CONSTANTLY (that is, if you are suffering from it - I know I did!). Mind you, I'm down to 10mg daily and I still have uncontrollable "stuff my face" days.  :D

Rimbo,

how often did you have to visit Baylor/DTI for doctor visits, blood work etc. after the transplant and how soon were you able to drive care yourself? I am wondering, how long time will I need transportation help after the transplant.
Title: Re: The date has been set
Post by: rimbo74 on August 21, 2007, 12:39:35 PM
Today is my 3 week anniversary.  My parents are still driving me to my appointments at DTI.  So far all three weeks I have had appts 4 days a week but if there are no issues, you should expect to go for clinic 3 times a week for the first three weeks.  I'm now on 2 days a week, so this week I went today and will go on Friday.  They say you can't drive a car for 4-6 weeks.  So next week I'm going to ask when I can start driving.  I would think next week or the week after I should be able to drive myself.  The reason why I feel that way is I feel I can drive now but next week I have another surgery to remove my PD catheter.

You will be very pleased with Baylor when you have your transplant, they were absolutely fantastic.  Have you gotten your date set yet?  Maybe when you have your transplant when I'm over at DTI I can swing by and meet you and your wife.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Thanks for the comments Rimbo.

I have not set the date yet, but it is most probably going to be in mid October.

How long did it take for your brother, before he was able to drive again?
Title: Re: The date has been set
Post by: rimbo74 on August 24, 2007, 10:59:15 PM
My brother was out of the hospital in one day and driving the following week.  He waited 8 days before driving.  I've started to drive a little, just short distances from my parents house.

Update on my transplant:

My creatinine (sp) has been hovering between 1.4 - 1.6.  I have been feeling great with the except of some swelling issues in the privates area and the tenderness.  I still take pain medicine everyday but have been walking about 2-3 miles a day.  It's great having the energy back.  On Monday I will have my first glofill test done and they will be reducing my prednisone from 20mg to 10mg per day.  I take 4 1mg Prograf and 4 250mg Cellcept along with many other antibiotics, BP medicine, cholestrol, and heartburn meds.
