I was looking for something new to watch since some shows are ending now. I loved Ray Donovan and The Bridge.
I power-watched House of Cards, which was really good. I have never seen The Wire so may get that from Netflix.
I also heard Once Upon A Time is addicting.
Any other recommendations?
-
Just recently came across it.
Did enjoy 'Hallmarks' The Good Witch, series.
-
90 day fiance
Judge Judy
Face Off (it's a really cool art contest)
The First 48
-
The Big Bang Theory (Just well written great characters)
NCIS
Pawn Stars
Band of Brothers (Stunningly Realistic)
-
Pawn Stars -I hate most reality shows but like the interesting items that walk thru their door and how they provide historical facts. Also like the "old man" and how he doesn't put up with squat from the others.
Turner Classic Movie Channel -particularly old "film noirs" and the fact that it's commercial free!
The Kelly File
The First 48 Hours -I was never in law enforcement. Let's just say that my past life involved a lot of investigating and who-dunnits.
Cops -I am always amazed by the patience and courage these cops have with the idiots and meth heads they must encounter.
Bait Car -love watching "instant justice" being served.
-
Lost all interest in Greys Anatomy, but love all the NCIS episodes, Hawaii 5-0, Blue Bloods, 2 Broke Girls, 2 & 1/2 men, stalker, gosh, the lists are endless all of a sudden. Best of all Blacklist!!! James Spader is awesome.
-
I very much like to watch the History Channel.
Some of the stories take only about one hour
and I appreciate how illuminating many of them are in that very short time...
-
Right now I'm really enjoying The Knick and Homeland.
-
I sometimes watch on youtube the most fascinating stories about US-crime-investigations...
and their way of investigation is often very illuminating and extremely helpful to learn for anyone
who might be "getting stuck" whilst investigating some questions in their own field ...
I particularly liked an US-series shown on youtube, where two ladies, a lawyer and a forensic investigator
exhibited a most intelligent way how to investigate very professionally and their special way of investigation
inspired me very much, in how to tackling some of my own questions and how to get answers in my own field...

Right now it's American Horror Story. I recently watched all 8 seasons of Weeds and all 3 seasons of United States of Tara on Netflix and loved both of them.

I loved The United States of Tara! Are you and I the only ones who watched that show?
-
Moose mom I was really hoping they'd bring Tara back. The ending left you hanging.

Ncis (original
Bbt
Homeland

Most are on break or ended now. Hard to find anything to watch.
Project Runway
Homeland
Ray Donovan
Downton Abby

I have discovered this on u-tube and it is most interesting:
Homicide Hunter Season with Lt. J. Kenna "chairing" and explaining different Episodes...
For example : 3 Episode 13 - Blood Sisters ...
Lt. J. Kenna is one of those rare persons, who is able to logically "sum it all up" in very few words without any "frills"...
... and because he "has practically seen it all", he appears to have become quite philosophical about "things"...
Very impressive...

At the moment I'm watching 'Revenge.' On season 2 now, am loving it!!
Also watching season 2 of Broadchurch not sure if that's in the US?
-
I love Revenge. We have watched it from day 1. Season 2 is good, season 3 is getting a little on the ridiculous side and the current season is just getting ludicrous. But hey, I've gotten this far and I want to see it through to the end.
My current favorite is Empire. It's on FOX. It just started right after the holidays. You can catch up on Fox on Demand.

I've just finished watching the first season of Broadchurch on Netflix! I LOVE that show! Season 2 starts here on BBC America next month. Can't wait!
Cattlekid, I am also really enjoying Empire!
I'm following Justified; this is its last season.
We've started watching Backstrom on Fox. I love Scandinavian crime books/series and TV series, and Backstrom is supposed to be based on a character in one of those series, and I'm not sure I like it. There are things I really like about it, but Rainn Wilson seems to be trying too hard; I suspect he has to grow into and mellow down his character.
I like the new comedy Fresh off the Boat.
On Netflix, I've just finished The Politician's Husband (with Broadchurch's David Tennant and Emily Mortimer, two faves of mine) and will be starting The Fall (Gillian Anderson of X-Files fame).
There are so many good things on offer but not enough time. I can't sit still long enough to binge watch, although with temps outside in the single digits, I guess this is the perfect time for that.
-
Moosemom its the last episode of season 2 broad church tonight, I think will be a cliffhanger to mean a season 3. The 2nd season has had a lot of criticism but I guess it would be difficult to live up to the first season. I'm enjoying it tho.

I've been reading in the online editions of some British newspapers about the criticism of Season 2 (while avoiding spoilers!), but that's not going to stop me from enjoying it when it comes next month. I can understand how most people might most enjoy the "whodunit" aspect of a show, but I am also interested in the aftermath. What happens in a small town after such a terrible thing has happened? Can't wait! You must let me know if the finale tonight does indeed end with a cliffhanger. I'd love a season 3!
-
Just watched the broad church season n 2 finale. No cliffhanger but said there will be a season 3 :) you must let me know what u think of it when it airs in the US, 2 storylines run this season, the aftermath obviously and the case Hardy didn't solve that haunted him before he came to broad church. So no idea what they, all do with season 3. Broad church is filmed not that far from us and last week we went for a walk on the beach there and saw the newsagents, beaver scouts hall and the police building (which is actually an apartment block!) It was freezing cold but think will go back in the summer!!
Oh other thing am watching is final season of the mentalist
-
Lainie, that is so cool that you live that close to fictious Broadchurch, and I am so glad there will be a season three. I will be sure to give you my review of season two.
The series finale of The Mentalist aired just last week over here. It ended on a sweet note.
Are there any other series from the UK that you like anf think might find their way over here? Do you watch Peaky Blinders? I have that on my Netflix queue. Oh, hubbie and I are watching Grantchester which follows right after Downton Abbey. When I was in the UK last October, I saw the first two eps on ITV and thought that US viewers might like it, so I was really pleased to see it come to our telly boxes!

Whenever I have time, I continue to watch (on u-tube) different episodes
of the Homicide Hunter Season with Lt. J. Kenna "chairing" and explaining different cases ...
I wish we had someone like him - with such a knife-sharp logic - playing a decisive part at Scotland Yard ...
... could be a blessing for the country... and we could perhaps have many cases solved ...
-
Forgot , also in the UK out now is 'Murder in The First.' Am enjoying that!
Moosemom I watched Grantchester, quite enjoyed it, if u liked that you'd prob like the detective series 'Inspector George Gently.' Don't know if that's in US?
Other British recommendations from netflix form me are Luther (detective), Sherlock, Whitechapel ans 'Jonatathan Creek (bit of an old series, the new ones aren't so good, when they change one of the main characters but a diff take on crime solving (a reporter and a guy who makes up magic tricks solve unsolvable crimes, plenty of laughs between the 2 main characters. ) They r all on netflix UK dunno about US?
karol we watched while ago 'The Tunnel' which sounds like 'The Bridge', a body found in the middle of channel tunnel so involves both UK and French detectives.
Have watched the Killing, (US version) not yet seen the 4th series.
Am waiting for the next series of Castle at the mo, and am watching season 4 of Grimm and Supernatural.
Kind of embarrassed to say but I alos watching season 5 of dance Moms , love it lol!!!
What would u all say your all time favourite show is? From whenever?
-
My all-time favorite has to be ER.
I was working in a hospital at the time it came out. I would watch that and Gray's Anatomy back to back on Thursday nights. I would be a sobbing mess when ER was over each week. On Fridays at lunch, we would discuss ER with the nurses that had moved over to the IT department and they would tell me what parts of it were BS and which parts were accurate.
What would u all say your all time favourite show is? From whenever?
-
I think my favorite show of all time is One Foot in the Grave. You'd be laughing, and then all of a sudden something would happen, and you'd find yourself with tears in your eyes. Justified comes in a close second. I love TV that has truly outstanding writing.
Lainiepop, I have not heard of Inspector George Gently; I'll have to go see if it is available here.
I remember Jonathan Creek from decades ago. Have they made a remake of it with new characters? I'll have to check on that, too.
The US version of The Killing, season 4, is tremendous. Incredibly tense. I love Linden and Holder and like the way it all ended. Let me know what you think once you've seen it!
-
Better Call Saul.
If you are a US Netflix subscriber, route your traffic through the UK to see it now (unavailable in the US). Google for the "HOLA" Chrome browser extension.
-
Meant to ask have any of you seen 'Grace point" the US version of broadchurch?
One of my all time faces was 'waking the dead' a UK detective thing. I'm a fan of those sort of shows;)
Moosemom 'George gently' is a detective drama set in the 1960s similar time period to Grantchester?!
-

I had never even heard of Gracepoint. Just googled it and was surprised to see that David Tennant is in the lead role as he is in Broadchurch. I might check it out OnDemand just for the novelty value.
Speaking of Broadchurch, I was so surprised to see Pauline Quirke! I remembered her from Birds of a Feather; lainiepop, did you ever see that show? In looking at info about Gracepoint, I see that Jacki Weaver is playing the Susan Wright character. Now, I adore Jacki Weaver. If you can, watch the Australian movie Animal Kingdom, and you will be a fan of hers forever!
I never saw Waking the Dead, but I do vaguely remember it being on tv.
I can stream George Gently on either Netflix or Hulu, so I'll probably do that sometime soon. Looking at the pictures from it, it does look familiar.
Oh, I'm looking forward to the new season of Orphan Black on BBC America.
AND I have found out that there is a new season of Foyle's War that's been shown in the UK. Is that right, lainiepop? I love that show and am hoping it will be coming to PBS very soon.
-
I don't watch Foyles War but my parents do, I think its been showing this last month.
Yes I love birds of a feather love watching the repeats. Did u know they have done 2 new seasons, one last yr and second just finished airing, with the 3 original girls! Pauline Quirk has been in lots of things and I think before they shot the new birds of a feather the girls did live shows of it on stage.
One thing starting this week from America is "Critical'. I'm not a big fan of medical dramas (well we live it right?!) But its had a lot of hype has anyone seen it?
-
I am still watching the Homicide Hunter Season with Lt. J. Kenna "chairing" and explaining different cases...
I feel very priviledged to watch the films and listen to what he says, because he has "seen it all" and really sounds
like a "seasoned" University Professor of criminology... which is most interesting because I never would have guessed
that there could be so much thought behind every single crime...
-
I remember Jonathan Creek from decades ago. Have they made a remake of it with new characters? I'll have to check on that, too.
I remember being fascinated by "Jonathan Creek" when it first started, perhaps it was "the right film at the right moment",
but then it started to become a little predictable, like a "well tried out" formula for a successful series...
and because of that it lost its appeal altogether ...
-
The hubby and I have been watching Arrow on Netflix. I was not so sure about it and watched it mainly for him, but I really like it.
Other favorites:
The Walking Dead
American Horror Story
The Following
Hemlock Grove (Netflix Original horror series.)
Ghost Adventures
We like scary stuff. LOL
-
We like scary stuff. LOL
Should help with adapting to dialsys ::)
-
:rofl;
So true.
-
American Idol has started again and I love that they no longer make fun of people who try out and are so awful they shouldn't be shown, then embarrassed.
Also like House of Cards, Shameless, Downton Abbey, Broadchurch, Episodes, Homeland and Project Runway. Oh and I started watching Survivor, we'll see how that goes.
I record everything, and skip through commercials, so it' not as bad as it looks. :P
-
I live in noSignalLand..so I must pay $$$$$$ for DirectTV to get even static… and last year I added Showtime as it seems to offer 20 different channels.
I get fascinated with reality..because they are actuality NOT real reality..and my scriptwriter brain starts figuring WHICH scenes were maybe REAL, and which were planned to perfection to seem 'real' ….I can almost diagram them.
PURE BRAIN CANDY
Little Women, both coasts, and Tara's Little Family. TLF cracks me up this feisty as hell 30 something rocker actress gets knocked up by her live in BF [ out of 6 LA women the only one NOT planning for a baby gets preggers?? was that 'reality' planned??] ..and actually shows some real emotion, no makeup (well, that is planned as part of 'real reality', as actresses are oK to look ugly and plain sometimes when the role calls for it.)
and I found her drummer/actor BF was showing to be a real niece human when the baby came.. BOTH of them were seemingly shallow all thru the LA show..but Tarra is the producer..she got smart quick, she directs this program, and it keeps them from having to hustle as elves in Hollywood.
My BIG GRIPE both Coast shows is HOW MANY FIGHTS are in each episode.. and then they all fly off to pleasure land1. cold weather fun. 2. hot weather island fun 3. Outdoor adventure fun 4. Party down in New Orleans fun…so F'ing phony.
If it is meant to show us they have real problems and real relationship pains it is over the top..NOBODY is that ready to punch each other out.. then thent kiss and makeup.
UH, wait, why are these my favorite shows??? Oh yeah..also My Big Fat Fabulous Life…...she IS funny!
-
I like the Shark Tank and The Profit. They both show some great ideas and innovative ways to fix every day problems. They also apply common business sense and room for it's applications for perpetual growth. Good ingenuity and imaginations. Too bad the average Joe has to "sell" to a millionaire to get the opportunity to make it big. That's being at the right place at the right time with lucky stars in your pocket! http://ihatedialysis.com/forum/Smileys/classic/new_flower.gif. I could learn some Business sense from it.
-
I can't believe no one mentioned my favorites.
Life Bellow Zero
Tanked
Insane Pools
Columbo (not exactly new, but still a favorite)
Vicar of Dibley (also old)
I used to watch Paranormal Egypt for a good laugh. They're on YouTube and hilariously fake. Did you know King Tut spoke English?
-
I loved Vicar of Dibley!!! I have most episodes on DVD and will watch them again from time to time.
okarol, I was trying to remember who it was who also liked Broadchurch...it was you! I loved that show.
I've just finished House of Cards on Netflix and am looking forward to starting the new season of Orange is the New Black.
My husband and I always look forward to The Graham Norton Show and Men In Blazers, which is a weekly show by 2 British expats who go over the highlights of the weekend's action in the English Premier League (soccer). It's aimed toward American audiences and so has many American cultural references (Game of Throne analogies are rampant). I've followed English football for years since I lived over there, but my husband knows nothing about the game, yet he has to have his Men in Blazers fix. So we are in mourning now that the season is over until August. But the Men in Blazers have a podcast; you should hear them bang on about Sepp Blatter! LOL!
I do love Game of Thrones and Veep. Vice is extremely interesting. We've recorded the new season of Orphan Black and plan to binge watch it. I'm looking forward to new shows starting in the summer, like True Detective.
-
I liked vicar of dibly too. They air oldies on a channel called gold over here. Like dibly, birds of a feather, only fools and horses etc.
Moosemom has season 2 of broadchurch aired in the US yet? I've just finished watching the US remake gracepoint and much preferred that ending!
True detective season 2 airs here inna couple wks, wonder if we,ll need subtitles for the accent again!! Second season of murder in the first is starting too, really loved the first one.
Just finished the 4th (and final?!) Series of revenge too.
-
Just watched seasons 1 and 2 of 'orphan black'. We loved it watched it back to back the last couple of weeks. Season 3 has just aired in the US but no news on when it's out in UK yet :(
-

We have all 10 eps of season 3 on DVR but have not yet had the time to watch them. I see a weekend of binge watching coming up after we've returned from summer hols.
We've been watching "Crimson Field" and the new version of "Poldark". We've started Season 2 of "True Detective", and despite the show being pretty much panned here in the US, we like it.
I'm watching "Mr. Robot" and "Deutchland 83", a German series (8 eps) showing on The Sundance Channel.
Lainiepop, Season 2 of Broadchurch has come and gone here in the US; I loved both seasons. I don't think there will be a Season 2 of "Gracepoint". I glanced at the last ep of Gracepoint (I didn't know it existed until you mentioned it) and couldn't see a difference between that ending and the one in Broadchurch. Perhaps I should have watched the whole ep. What was the main difference?
-
Ray Donovan. Season 3 has started and I love that show.
-
Arrr moosemom I so wanna watch season 3 now!! Is it just me who loved the Helena character?! Lol, once she wasn't quite the maniac as first portrayed ( my daughter's name is Elena lol but sometimes people call her Helena?!) I also like Alison, plenty of humour even in the serious tones.
We are on I think episode 6 or 7 of true detective and it's OK but getting a bit lost in the storyline. Gonna start season 2 of murder in the first as almost got them all taped on sky planner.
The difference in gracepoint ending (SPOILERS!!!!!!!!!) was the dad didn't do it, the son (his friend did). It was an accident. He'd been watching his dad meet Danny saw Danny ran off the in anger ran at his dad with a hockey stick, not realising as he took a swing Danny ran back telling him it was all OK, the swing hit Danny in the head. I only felt better ending becahsey with season 2 of broadchurch the dad is backtracking and saying he didn't commit the murder after previously confessing in season 1, I feel they're trying to drag it out as why would he confess unless to protect his son? Maybe broadchurch will do same ending just spread over 3 seasons?!
Justagirl r u in the UK? I can't find season 3 started anywhere!
-
Oh wow, lainiepop...that IS a very different ending!!!
I know that a lot of UK peeps who liked Broadchurch season 1 didn't like S2 so much. I think that might be because the show changed really from a murder mystery to a courtroom drama, and I happen to like both. Also, S2 focused on how a small, tightly knit community can turn on itself in the face of such a terrible crime committed by one of its own. I personally hope that S3 will show that the dad DID do it and that the story will become about how Broadchurch as a whole and the families in particular can or cannot come to terms with it.
OR, maybe the dad (who I think did do it) will be found not guilty because the evidence has been so compromised, and he/Broadchurch/the families will have to deal with THAT!
-
Can i just ask has anyone watched 'Sense8' ? or 'The Leftovers?' These were 2 hubby suggested off netflix/sky box sets, but i said let's do orphan black (glad i did!). 'the Leftovers' was made by producers of 'Lost'

I enjoy at the moment some of the 1959-1963 TV-series "The Untouchables"... (courtesy of youtube)
Based on the memoir of the same name by Eliot Ness and Oscar Fraley, it fictionalized Ness' experiences as a Prohibition agent,
fighting crime in Chicago in the 1930s with the help of a special team of agents handpicked for their courage,
moral character and incorruptibility, nicknamed "The Untouchables".
The acting by Robert Stack and all the other actors is very impressive ...

Thank you PrimeTimer, I shall look into it on youtube and I shall be careful because of your kind warning ...
... One of the reasons why some of "The Untouchables" are so very interesting to watch,
is because lots of thinking has gone into how to approach every single challenge ...
... and the series gives the "onlooker" a good chance to follow the very clever thinking-process ...
Thanks again and best wishes from Kristina. :grouphug;

Looking forward to the latest Dr Who series featuring a local actor (yes 3 Dr's have lived in my area!)
Just finished watching Sense8 a great SciFan show on Netflix starting on Pinky Blinders, also on Netflix..
I'll usually watch anything from Star Trek to NCIS on dialysis of an afternoon:)
Beginning of all the winter season series on terrestrial telly, the beeb etc so its all good:) :bandance;
-
What did u think of Sense8 okarol?
We just watched the first series of Orange Is The New Black on netflix as it's been a big hit but I'm not sure about it tbh, it's not my usual thing but then I wanted to know what happened next.
-
What did u think of Sense8 okarol?
I haven't seen it. Still catching up and watching Lost, Ray Donovan, Bar Rescue and Fixer Upper :)

The Voice
-
Currently watching season 1 of secrets and lies just aired in the UK. And finally got to see season 3 of orphan black :)
-
Big Bang, I cn relate to most of the Nerds.
-
Must be the hidden adventurer in me but I am liking these Alaska "reality" shows. The Last Frontier, Yukon Men, and The Last Alaskans. I always felt I could live like that ... now I guess I need power for this %#$* machine.......
-
I am really liking HOMELAND. It's really good right now, and INTENSE!
Survivor because it's real and not scripted like most reality.
It's GREAT!
Oops sorry okarol I meant jw77 lol. What season of lost are u on?
I keep trying to start it. Hopefully soon.

The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes 1970 complete full movie in English 1 hour 53 min (courtesy of youtube)
with (one of my favourite actors) Robert Graham Stephens.
I mention this film, because it is one of the very few and rare productions,
where "Sherlock Holmes" does not appear with a touch of superciliousness and arrogance ...
-
My Big Fat Fabulous Life is entertaining. She and her Mom have wicked senses of humor. Her No BS - no body shame campaign is really taking off.
-
Champions (1984) ... (courtesy of youtube) 1 hour 50 mins.

Rather than succumb to the disease, however, he fights it with courage and endurance and stages a miraculous recovery ... and goes on to win the 1981 Grand National steeple chase on the horse Aldaniti.
Director:
John Irvin
Writers:
Bob Champion (autobiography: Champion's Story)
Stars:
John Hurt (one of the best British character actors), Edward Woodward, Gregory Jones, Mick Dillon and many others, see full cast & crew ...

I watch very little TV, but my regulars are Masterpiece Theater and Masterpiece Mystery. I think The Good Wife is a very intelligent, well-written and well-acted show.
-
I've just finished Narcos on Netflix and have the finale yet to see of The Bridge (the original Danish version).
I'm loving The Knick; there are so many good shows on right now. We have so many on our DVR queue. We haven't even started Fargo! One of our local PBS stations shows foreign TV series, and we're watching Unit One (Danish) and Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries. We also haven't started the most recent Orphan Black season. So much to watch, so little time.
-
Sorry for bumping an old thread but I was thinking of creating one just like this one.
I like to watch super hero shows...so I watch all of the ones on CW
The walking dead
Wrestling
a few space shows out there.
Sometimes I'll even watch a cheap syfy show.
I don't like this new style of only making about 10 episodes per season then cramming another show right behind it.
-
Recent faves: Better Call Saul. Game of Thrones. Donovan. Fixer Upper. Million Dollar Listing. The Profit.

One of my all-time favourite movie-films (on DVD) is : Follow the Sun, the 1951 biographical film of the life of golf legend Ben Hogan (August 13, 1912 – July 25, 1997). It stars Glenn Ford as Ben Hogan and Anne Baxter as his wife. Many golfers and sports figures of the day appear in the movie as well.
In Fort Worth, Texas, Ben Hogan (Glenn Ford) works as a golf caddy to help support his family. He romances and marries Valerie Fox (Anne Baxter), then, with her support, decides to become a professional golfer. At first, Hogan has very little success, but he gradually improves. Meanwhile, the Hogans become friends with Chuck Williams (Dennis O'Keefe), a popular fellow pro. After serving in the military for World Disaster II, Hogan returns to golfing and eventually becomes a top player. However, he acquires an image of a robotic, cold competitor, because the watching crowds and analyzing newspaper articles make him feel uncomfortable to play his golf and so he tries very hard to concentrate on his golf and that's how it came that in the press he was called "The Texas Iceberg"...
... After winning a tournament (beating Williams), Hogan became very seriously injured in a horrific car accident. Doctors hold out little hope for him ever recovering or even walking, let alone golfing again. But, during his convalescence, Hogan is amazed and grateful by the outpouring of regard for him from his fans and it inspires him greatly... Through sheer determination and the help of his wife and his fans, he recovers and goes on to win the 1950 US Open Golf Championship to become one of the greatest golfers of his time.
... With hardly anything going for him, except his sheer determination, Ben Hogan demonstrates, how to approach the impossible and overcome all sorts of obstacles ... and whenever I feel a little "down", I watch again this film as a sort of "medicine" to feel encouraged and continue with my own efforts as best as I can.
-
My husband and I love Better Call Saul and Fargo. Fargo is a little bloody for my taste, but hubby tells me when to look and when to hide! We have been watching Longmire on Netflix and gotten really into it. I also have watched 13 Reasons Why on Netflix. Excellent show, but hard to watch.
-
My only MUST WATCH RELIGIOUSLY show is The Late Show w/Stephen Colbert
I like all flavors of NCIS, and Criminal Minds, though I have a feeling that Beyond Borders has been canned.
Bull, the new Michael Weatherly show is pretty good.
Amazing Race Canada has just started, I think it's in in 3rd or 4th episode. I also watch the American version when it's on.
I've been DVRing Still Star Crossed and Salvation. I like SSC, but I haven't started Salvation yet.
I like to watch people cook, so I tend to watch a lot of Food Network, especially on weekends. I like the Pioneer Woman, Chopped, and anything Guy Fieri or Rachel Ray is involved with. I also tend to watch the different flavors of Say Yes to the Dress, though only cuz my mom is watching it. *L*
My Netfix shows are House of Cards, Stranger Things, all flavors of Star Trek, the Dragons series (I think the last few seasons are called Race to the Edge). I also watched Agatha Christie's Poirot on Netflix. I remember watching those years ago on A&E. I watched The Crown, which isn't too bad. Lately, though, I've been mostly watching cartoons and kids shows while in dialysis.
Oh, can't forget Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy. I record Jeopardy on the Seattle channel, because the Boston channel will prempt it with some kind of football show. I hate football. The Boston CBS is all New England Patriots. I understand covering the local team, but even when it's not football season, at least one story on the local news involves the Patriots. It's annoying as.. well.. you know *L*

Totally Enjoying King Julian (EXCILED) on Netflix, Dreamworks genius and you wonder what the writers are smoking, so many nifty references to other films, genres and the odd healthy innuendo!
Also Dr Who.. Lady Dr.. The debate goes on. The Girl is loving BBC Poldark.. Both been watching Zoo as well
-
Also Dr Who.. Lady Dr.. The debate goes on.
Would there be this much "debate" if the new Dr. was black?
Broadchurch, GoT, Master of None, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Dicte (and other Scandi tv series), Orange is the New Black, The Carmichael Show...so much good TV to watch!
-
For me its still got to be Dr Who:D
For a real laugh however, Netflix is doing 'King Julian 'EXCILED' a madagascar spinoff, it may be animated but its got so many references to other films, I swear the writers are smoking something, its genius!!

Totally Enjoying King Julian (EXCILED) on Netflix
I've seen that a couple of times scrolling through.. I wasn't sure exactly what it was, so never bothered with it.. I kind of forgot how funny the writers can be at Dreamworks.. I believe there is also a Puss in Boots series that I haven't checked out yet

I was looking for something new to watch since some shows are ending now. I loved Ray Donovan and The Bridge.
I power-watched House of Cards, which was really good. I have never seen The Wire so may get that from Netflix.
I also heard Once Upon A Time is addicting.
Any other recommendations?
I'm looking forward to MacGyver Season 2. This is the new MacGyver with Lucas Till and George Eads! I have already seen the original series and I am wondering if Richard Dean Anderson will make an appearance in this one!
-
For me its still got to be Dr Who
OK, that makes you the most intelligent person on this board :)
However since Dr Who is not on at the moment (except repeats, there are always repeats showing somewhere). The best show on TV at the moment is Lucifer (Fox in the US, Amazon TV in the UK). For those who have never seen it, the slightly mad plot line is: Satan gets bored with running Hell, so he moves to LA where he opens a nightclub (as you do). One of his favourite singers gets murdered, so he teams up with a female detective (who once stared in a soft porn {very soft porn} teen comedy) to catch the killer. He finds he enjoys this (misses "punishing" bad people) so becomes the porn star cop's unofficial partner. Oh yeah, and the devil has a psychiatrist too (he has moved to LA, after all).
Umm, when I said "Slightly mad plot", perhaps I should have left out the word "slightly".
It can occasionally be slightly blasphemous (for example season two featured God's ex-wife) but if you can live with that it does occasionally make good points about the religion too. And it is a very good show.
-
Thanx for that tip Paul, Lucifer will get a try at least
-
On my last visit to the UK, I binge watched "People Just Do Nothing", and I know no one else who has seen it other than the one friend who recommended it to me. I tried so hard to explain it to my husband but utterly failed, and he very kindly bought the DVD set for me. I couldn't believe that it's available on NTSC format! I was so pleasantly surprised.
Netflix has just released the final season of W1A, which is a parody of the BBC (W1A being the post code for Broadcasting House). It stars Hugh Bonneville, who was Lord Crawley in Downton Abbey.
We're also watching Vera on Netflix; we're halfway through season 4.
Looking forward to the new season of Peaky Blinders.
Almost through watching Ken Burns' Vietnam War.
-
Love loved Ray Donovan; every time he opens the truck someone is gonna get whacked! Tonight is the finale of project runway-not really digging any of the finalists but the drama is addicting.

Just saw a pilot for a TV show with a mad plotline. The actual series has not started yet, they put out the pilot as a sort of teaser advert for the main series. The plotline is: Jean Claude Van Damme was not really an actor (if you have seen any of his films, that much rings true). His films were really a cover story. In truth he was a "dark ops" type special agent. Location shoots were arranged to get him wherever the mission needed him to be. But eventually he got a bit too old for that life and retired.
Then a chance meeting with his on set hair designer from the old days reminds him that he really loves her. To get back in her life he returns to his old boss and gets his job as a special agent back. Trouble is, he is still a bit passed his best, and not really up to new missions.
Jean Claude Van Damme plays himself, brave, particularly as he plays himself as a bit of an idiot. It is no award winner, but funny in places, especially if you are old enough (and had lowbrow taste enough) to have watched Jean Claude Van Damme's movies in the 1980s, so that you get the in jokes. Will probably end up as one of those shows that I watch occasionally, when I have nothing else to do, but don't go out of my way to see.
-
Just seen something on TV that I never thought I'd see, a comedian that I thought "went too far". I'll not quote the joke because British TV allows a lot more than American TV, and this is probably not the place for stuff like this, but the comedian was describing his sex life with his wife, it was very funny material, and I was laughing, but as he described one particular messy act I suddenly realized "I don't want to hear this". And by the look on the audiences faces, they did not either.

Weee......Got Castle back. I am watching it on Amazon TV, they tend to charge (the equivalent of about $2.50 per episode) for the first year after broadcast, then give it free. Being tight I never pay, always wait (and even if I did, $2.50 per episode is far too expensive, cheaper to buy the series on DVD). This worked up to season six, but season seven did not go down in price to "free" when expected. So I waited. Then they started charging for seasons one to six too, so I assumed we would never get the last two seasons free (although I did not know they would be the last two seasons back then, there were still plans for season nine) and gave up on the show. Then a couple of days back I noticed that season one was free again, checked the others, and found that all episodes in all eight seasons are free.
So now I am at last catching up on the last two seasons of Castle.
(The day I discovered that the last two seasons were now free was my birthday. Do you think they did it as a birthday present for me? :) )

Of course it's a present.
I sometimes watch on Amazon "the tick" which is a pretty funny play on "the fly"
-
Oh, I'm so sadnow! I just ran over to add Castle to my Amazon playlist and it's not free here in the US. Boooooooo.
But at least we have peanut butter cups, so.

but as he described one particular messy act I suddenly realized "I don't want to hear this". And by the look on the audiences faces, they did not either.
At least the script writers in Better Call Saul simply used the term Cleveland Steamer and were gracious enough not to describe it.

I'm watching Altered Carbon at the moment. It's really good. It's a sci-fi show and you can get all the episodes at once on Netflix.

Am now watching 'the good wife', very good

I'm watching the second season of "Occupied" on Netflix. It's a Norwegian tv series set in the near future.
The PM of Norway has decided to end Norway's oil and gas industry and replace it with mining and processing a new form of energy, thus helping the environment. Well, the EU doesn't like this at all, so they "invite" the Russians to "temporarily occupy" Norway with a view of maintaining Norway's oil and gas fields.
I really like it because when I was younger, I worked in London with a reinsurance broker for energy underwriters at Lloyd's of London, so I saw firsthand how big Norway's oil and gas facilities and markets are. I have friends and colleagues still in Oslo. I was there just a few months ago, and as a part of my tourist-y agenda, I visited City Hall (that's where the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony is held each year). So imagine my surprise when I saw in the tv show that City Hall had been commandeered as Russian HQ.
And then when parts of Oslo started blowing up (in the series), it was really creepy!
So, if you have Netflix, I recommend this series.
We're also watching Jessica Jones, but I also like my half hour comedies like Modern Family and blackish.
We watched Roseanne the other night and loved it!
-
Am now watching 'the good wife', very good
That's a really good show. I was actually sorry to see it end. There is a spinoff to it called "The Good Fight" which is also very good, and in it's second season. Unfortunately, in the US, it's only available on CBS All Access, but here in Canada, it plays on the Women's Network. You can probably check the Googles to see if it's available anywhere else.
I've started watching a new show, called Rise, about a troupe of high school theatre students. It has a very Dead Poets Society feel to it
-
I very much enjoy watching the series "World of Mysteries" and "Naked Science" (both courtesy of youtube) and it is most interesting to watch scientists using the latest scientific tools to find an answer to interesting folktales like the Loch Ness-monster-mystery or the "Quest for the Holy Grail", or the mystery of Pyramids etc. Great fun to watch!
-
For current TV, it is "Empire" on Fox (US). Like the old TV show "Dallas" but in a hip-hop music setting.
For TV that is currently not on, it's Game of Thrones. I just finished season 3 so PLEASE no spoilers. :bow;

I've just started the newest season of Peaky Blinders, so that's my favorite show right now.
We have the newest season of Westworld on our DVR; has anyone else seen it yet, and if so, is it any good?

Not so much "watching TV" as "listening to the radio". We still have a couple of radio stations that feature "proper" radio shows (drama, soaps, comedy, panel games, news, current affairs, etc.) and I was listening to a panel game show called "Just A Minute" where contestants have to speak for a minute on a subject without deviating from the subject, hesitating (pausing), or repeating any words except those in the subject. The show has run for over 50 years with the same presenter (Nicholas Parsons) who, in 50 years has never missed an episode. There have also been three attempts to run it on television, one running for several seasons, and he presented every single episode on television too. Today, for the first time in over fifty years, he missed an episode, one of the regular panelists stood in for him.
I am thinking that with 50+ years unbroken record, the producers would have rather skipped a recording or two instead of breaking that record, so I would guess Nicholas Parsons is considering retiring, which would pretty much be the end of an era, but he is 94 years old, so I guess he is overdue for a rest.

Hello Paul,
thanks for the information about Nicholas Parsons. I have admired his wonderful acting skills for many years, especially in some of his films i.e. "Brothers in Law" together with some other favourites like Terry Thomas, Ian Carmichael and Richard Attenborough. .. and another favourite film comes to mind like "Too many Crooks", again with Terry Thomas and, not to forget one of the ultimate favourite films: "Carry On Regardless"...
... Did you know that at one time he held the Guinness World Record for the longest after-dinner speech (11 hours for charity) ...?
Thanks again for reminding me ... and ... now ... have to look for those videos ....
-
After "Just A Minute" and "Sale Of The Century", the thing I most remember him for is Dr Who.
As to the films you mention: I used to love it when films of that era (both British and American) were shown on TV weekend afternoons. I miss the old stuff, but am too mean to pay £15.99 for the DVDs.
-

Hello Paul, I agree: £15.99 is a bit expensive for one DVD. But sometimes they are on offer and hopefully there is some luck coming along. Fingers crossed !
Many years ago I have taken some Videos of favourite films and all was well until the day when we needed a new Video-DVD-recorder and unfortunately this new Video-DVD-recorder does not "accept" the Videos I have recorded ages ago, it only "accepts" the bought Video-films.
So, with my old "self-made" Videos, it shows absolutely nothing on the screen, whereas with the bought Video-films it actually shows the film. I have been wondering whether that is a common problem with self-recorded Videos and what could be done about it?
Many thanks from Kristina. :grouphug;
-
My solution to the video problem was that when the popularity of videos died and you could pick up video recorders for £5 to £10 at boot fairs, I bought several to stock up, so that when one broke down I could throw it away and unpack the next one. Video recorders will play any type of tape, so no problem there. And it seems like a sound investment, because I have noticed that the price of second hand video recorders is shooting up, presumably because although demand is very low, supply has got even lower.
As to your problem that the DVD/video machine only plays pre-recorded videos, are your home recorded ones on a slow speed (e.g. six hours on a three hour tape)? Because that is the only way I can see that happening. A pre-recorded video tape has an identical signal to a home recorded one. There is no reason one should work and not the other. It is like saying "I have a car that works perfectly when blonde people drive it, but it refuses to start if redheads get behind the wheel."

Just started watching 'Cloack and dagger' on Amazon Prime. After 4 episodes I still don't get it, but it's well made, and Now I need to know how it ends. But Hubby starts early tomorrow and than there's the World Cup too..............

I'm up to episode 3 of Cloak and Dagger, it is really, really, slow. Usually my complaint about modern movies is "too much action, not enough plot", but this show has no plot whatsoever. Three episodes in, and we are up to where they should have been ten to fifteen minutes into episode one. I'm guessing they are basing it on a short run comic series (six or eight issues) and trying to spread that over five seasons of twenty two episodes.
and than there's the World Cup too..............
Did you see today's match? (If not don't read on, spoiler alert.) I know England were playing at their best, but Panama stil have to be really, really bad to loose to us by six to one. And they played dirty, so to loose six to one while cheating - really really really bad players!
-
I'm watching the World Cup! The England v Panama match started a bit too early for me, but I dragged myself out of bed to check the score in the second half. When I saw it was already 5-0, I went back to bed. I've seen the highlights, and yes, Panama did make a meal out of it.
It's too bad because all of the teams that have already been eliminated have been non-European. That's kind of a shame, really.
I've been watching more football than regular TV! Football all day long, and then the Match of the Day type programs in the evening. Sporting heaven! :yahoo;
-
I am curious to see what will come of what happened during Serbia/Switzerland on Friday. Apparently after two of the Swiss players tackled the Serbian player near the end of the game, they made hand gestures that approximated the eagle symbol on the Albanian flag. Serbia is up in arms as the World Cup is supposed to be politically neutral AND they got fined 8500 euros for spectators waving a WWII flag during the match vs Costa Rica.
-
I saw that match. Both goalscorers (Shaqiri and Xhaka) made the gesture when they scored, not during a tackle. Shaqiri's goal was in the 90th minute! I've seen both of those players play in the English Premier League, but I've never seen them use that gesture until the match against Serbia. They may be banned for the final match of the group stage against Costa Rica if FIFA finds they've used "provocative" gestures.
On the other side, the entire Serbian FA is under investigation for their fans' behavior AND because of comments made by their manager, ie, that because the ref didn't award a penalty (and the ref should have, to be fair), he should be put on trial in The Hague for war crimes!
The World Cup IS supposed to be politically neutral (but it rarely is)! That's why all of these people are under investigation!

Hello cattlekid and MooseMom,
... in the "old days" I also watched football and especially the World Cup and I thought it very entertaining. But these days I am not too sure any more, because all professional players are multimillionaires many times over and because of that, they don't appear to really bother that much about playing good entertaining football any more. I haven't really been able to detect the "old" passion for football any longer ... and it seems, that the multi millions in players salaries have slowly taken away the real passionate love for football and the urgent "need to win this game" ... what do you think?
P.S. I do hope my comment does not come over as negative, but this are my honest feelings about the development of football these days and I do hope it is not as bad as I think it might be ...
-
Kristina, as someone who has loved all kinds of sports for decades, I certainly see your point. I have grown weary of the multi-millionaire players and owners and how it is rare to find passion for the game where money is spent and earned so freely.
That said, this is exactly why I love the World Cup. You have the huge stars who earn boatloads of cash with their club teams, yet here they are, representing their countries who are struggling on the world stage. The World Cup showcases players we've never seen before playing for nations outside of the big European powerhouses. There is a universal appeal for rooting for the underdog. While I lived in England, there was of course loads of support for the England national team, but there was ALWAYS a great swell of support for a "Cinderella" team, usually from one of the African nations.
You get a superstar like Messi who has been a pillar for his club, Barcelona, but in the World Cup, he can't even hit a penalty kick. Each year he has the opportunity to get Barcelona to the Champions' League, but he gets the chance to win the World Cup with Argentina only every four years. He's never won it, and he probably never will.
While in many ways, it IS all about the money, it is still possible to find intriguing and bittersweet and heroic and controversial and just play inspiring story lines. Despite the money, these are human beings playing the game, and those human beings all come with fascinating stories of their own.
-
Many thanks MooseMom for your thorough thoughts, I am so glad to read your opinion, which is so different from mine and it is quite true what you say!
It is most interesting to read your mentioning that all these football-stars are practically in the same boat, when they play for the World Cup and I like your way to watch the World Cup and see the human side of it and the great support for the "Cinderella" team... and I wish you great enjoyment and may your favourite team win ...
Thanks again and all the best wishes from Kristina... :grouphug;
-
Seriously Kristina, what MM sais is so through! I discovered Columbia beating Poland the other day. They might not go much further in the Cup, but they made my evening. Thursday (I think) they'll play Senegal. Give it a go ;D
-
And Germany is OUT!!!
For the first time in 80 years. 2-0 for South Korea :clap;
:cheer: :cheer:
-
Two goals scored by S. Korea IN EXTRA TIME!
And THIS is why we watch!
Wow!
-
:cheer: :cheer: :cheer: and Uruguay beats Portugal!!!!! :yahoo;
-
And Russia beats Spain on penalties!! OMG!
THIS is why we watch!!
And Denmark has just scored in only the second minute! WOW!
I am really disappointed, tbough, that there are no African teams left. :'(
-
O poor Japan, they played so well, till the end!! But lost from Belgium in the last minute.
-
As soon as Belgium's first goal went in, I suspected the outcome would not be kind to Japan. To lose in stoppage time after being ahead by two goals is just soul-destroying. I'm gutted.
-
:cheer: :cheer: Omg England won on penalties!!! From Colombia!
-
I had seen all of those disastrous missed penalties over the years, so my heart was in my throat (and one of those missed by Gareth Southgate!). What a relief that history has not repeated itself!
-

Southgate (coach England) said before the championship started that that was the reason he would make sure that penalties would be the most focussed on in practise. Obviously paid of.
Tonight was France vs Belgium. Beautiful match, won by France.
-
And I should hope so, too! Still, I don't want to see a penalty shootout tomorrow vs Croatia.
That WAS a good match today (or tonight, if you're in the UK). Not much light between France and Belgium. I suspected that the winner of that match will win the final, but gosh, you just never know. That's why they play the game, right?
I'm also watching Wimbledon and am excited that Serena Williams has made the semifinals. She has really been through the wars, and it has been nice to see her on court again. Now, if only Andy Murray can recover in time for the US Open, I'll be happy. I hear he's been joining Tim Henman in the BBC commentary booth. That's hard for me to imagine.

Just watched an episode of "The FBI files documentary" ... absolutely awesome !!! The way the FBI-officers work and think it all out before they proceed is just stunning! Compliments to America to have developed such an awesome intelligent investigatory & forensic national security organisation ... Hopefully some Scotland Yard officers watch some of these episodes to perhaps get some inspiration, because when listening to some of the elderly former Scotland Yard officers, New Scotland Yard seems to have "lost the plot"...

And England is going home, after losing from Croatia. :(

Trump hates the FBI and believes nothing the intelligence services have to say about Trump's campaign's ties with Russia.
-
And England is going home, after losing from Croatia. :(
England scored too soon. LOL!
Croatia just had fresher legs in extra time, and England playing with 10 men didn't help.
But Gareth Southgate has put together a team that England should be proud of, a team that is young and that should be just growing stronger as the next international tournament (the Euros, I guess) approaches. I'm really optimistic!
-
... I still watch occasionally some episodes of "The FBI files documentary" ... courtesy of youtube ... and the knife-sharp-logic of these FBI-officers is very impressive and I am wondering whether these officers are especially employed because of their high IQ ? Even when they describe their thoughts on "circumstantial evidence", their logic and how they arrive at their conclusion is just awesome and stunning ...
-
I'm still mourning the loss of "Lucifer".
You do that all the time in America. You create a brilliant TV show, then you cancel it. First it was "Haven", now it is "Lucifer".
In Britain we know how to run with a good series. We are soon to start a new season of (IMHO) the world's greatest ever TV show. A series that started in 1963.
-
Paul, are you referring to Doctor Who?
I agree with you for the most part about the all of the shows that are prematurely cancelled here in the US. If it is not a hit from the very start, its days can be numbered.
-
Paul, are you referring to Doctor Who?
I said " the world's greatest ever TV show", so obviously I am talking about Dr Who! :)
-
Come to the end of Grimm, so am trying out Sleepy Hollow to replace it. It is good, but not as good as Grimm.

Summer is pretty much the dead season for TV series here in the US. Our screens are filled with reality shows that I'm not all that interested in. So we've been watching some foreign TV series on either DVD or Netflix, the latest being The Bureau (French).
Does anyone else here like "foreign" (non US) TV? Anyone have any recommendations?
-
Does anyone else here like "foreign" (non US) TV? Anyone have any recommendations?
Our Arlington VA library system has a good collection of foreign movies (not TV) with new movies coming in throughout the month. You rarely will see the good movies on the shelves, as people I like my wife activity uses the holds system to get in the queu for popular DVDs. The wait can be quite long for the forgien films as they might have only one DVD unless it’s very popular.
On Amazon we enjoyed the three episode A Very British Scandal with Huge Grant. The first episode was a tad slow setting up the gay content and communicating the problems they encountered back when Buggery was a crime. After that it had more intrigue.
-
Also on some flights I watched a few episodes of Business Men versus Aliens on Amazon Prime streaming (downloaded). It’s a very simple show, very cheesy, in Japanese with subtitles but I kept watching it due to a the completely brainless sort of entertaining content.
-
Does anyone else here like "foreign" (non US) TV?
Oh yeah, I watch it all the time! :)

'Shetland' is a great Scottish police drama- good looking detective and beautiful scenery

Our favorite tv show right now is Live PD. Favorite cop is Master Sergeant Deputy "shut your freakin' mouth" Baker. :police: :police: :cheer: :cheer:

Invest in hulu commercial free 12 dollars a month. That makes dialysis go by fast.

I’m watching “Better call Saul”- it’s a spin-off prequel in the same world as Breaking Bad. But it’s a very different show than BB. I recommend it (but I think you need to have seen BB to totally appreciate it).
I recently caught up on the last season of This is Us.
Otherwise I mostly watch reruns of Frazier, Seinfeld, or Don’t laugh- I will watch golden girls or Little house on the Prairie when I just need some background noise. . Or dumb reality shows like Chopped or House hunters. .
I also watch reruns of I love Lucy while getting ready in the morning.
There really isn’t much to watch. But I Look forward to Homeland coming back this winter.
Will have to check out some of the shows mentioned here.
-
Don’t laugh- I will watch golden girls or Little house on the Prairie
Why would we laugh? Neither is a show I enjoy, but they were both hugely successful, so people like me must be in the minority.
Taste is a personal thing. What one person loves another hates, and vice versa. There is no reason to laugh at someone just because they like something that you do not.
(Except for people who think Star Trek is a better show than Dr Who. Those people are just plain insane!)
-
Love "Better Call Saul"
Can't wait for "Ray Donovan" and "Game of Thrones" to start again.
Just started watching "Mayans" and like it so far.
A friend is an extra on "Shameless" so I usually watch it.
"Survivor" is pretty good. I cannot believe how long that show has been on.
When nothing else is on I watch "Forensic Files."
:waving; :waving; :waving;

:santahat; Some TV channels have a weird idea of what constitutes "Christmas spirit" Just gone midnight here, and have just finished watching a late Christmas movie. The Plot was basically: Santa Clause Vs hordes of zombie elves! Glad it is well past bedtime for the kids, would have traumatised the young ones...and some of the older ones.
-
Wow. Sounds disturbing.
I always wondered why they always show The Sound of Music at Christmas time.
I enjoy watching it but never understood how it became an Xmas time show.
I mean, Nazis don’t seem very holiday-y.
Ah well Right now I’m watching A Christmas story- you’ll shoot your eye out!

When I heard that Murphy Brown was being brought back, I couldn't wait, and I was not disappointed.
I loved the show as a kid, and thought it funny that it ticked off the Conservative govt at the time.
I love how they kept the running gag of Murphy not being able to keep an assistant and that they didn't write out the Jim Dial character, considering that the actor who plays him is in his 80s.
I am eagerly awaiting the second season.

Trump hates the FBI and believes nothing the intelligence services have to say about Trump's campaign's ties with Russia.
... That just goes to show how clever :bow; the FBI intelligence services are ... no one, not even a president can pull the "wool over their eyes" so easily, can they ?

I'm catching up with "My Brilliant Friend" that I had recorded several weeks ago. It's wonderful.
-
I watched the first season of "Big Little Lies" - not sure what I think so far.
"Stranger Things" is intense but good.
I have been watching the gardening series from BBC "Big Dreams Small Spaces" with Monty Don on Netflix. Love it.
I am looking forward to the new upcoming season "Survivor: Island of the Idols" in September.
Have loved watching the all-girl quintuplets growing up on "Outdaughtered."
I am still looking for something new, would love any suggestions! :waving;

Hell on Wheels Netflix

I'm working thru season 17 of Project Runway. Love the drama and the designs. Missing Tim Gunn and Heidi Klum who are developing another design series. Auf Wiedersehen!
-
I'm following so many different shows right now that it is difficult to finish any one series.
That said, I did finish "Jane the Virgin" which has been a bright spot on a bleak TV menu for some years now.
I'm also following HBO's "Years and Years" which is horrific on a whole different level.
I'm in Season 6 of "Orange is the New Black"; the final season 7 has just begun on Netflix.
Also on Netflix, we're watching "Dark", which is a pretty cool German show with time travel at the center of the plot.
I'm in the middle of Season 2 of "Big Little Lies" which I've liked more than I thought I would. As brilliant as Meryl Streep has been in so many roles, her performance in BLL is her best work. She's downright creepy.
It is really hard for me to find a free hour throughout the day to watch something on TV, but I do try to have some "me" time in the afternoon when it's too hot to get outdoors and work in the garden.

Summer season, rubbish and repeats on British TV, so I tend not to watch in the evening. During Dialysis I'm watching a Canadian cop show and a lot of quiz shows.
My favourite of the quiz shows is a show called Impossible. Like many shows it gives contestants a choice of three answers, with the twist is that one is correct, one is wrong, and one is impossible. EG "Which city in the USA is the nation's capital? A)Washington DC, B)New York, C) Vancouver." The correct answer is, of course A)Washington DC, the wrong answer is B)New York, the impossible answer is C) Vancouver, because the question states "Which city in the USA" and Vancouver isn't in the USA, it is in Canada.
If you get the correct answer, you win a point, get the wrong answer you don't. But pick the impossible answer and you are out of that game.
I enjoy it for two reasons. Firstly, I enjoy working out both the correct answer and the impossible answer (the actual questions are harder than the one I made up as an example) Secondly, the big prize is ten thousand pounds (about fourteen thousand dollars in good times), and if someone wins it, they don't get a cheque or a pile of paper money. They get ten thousand one pound coins. To give you some idea how big a load that is, throughout the show the money is displayed in a glass case, about two foot wide and ten or twelve foot high. If they win, the money comes tumbling out like a jackpot win from a gambolling machine, and the winner gets ecstatic. And I love watching them and thinking "Have you worked out how to get that home?"
(NOTE: this post was edited after Simon Dog replied, but it does not change his point, I was just correcting a typo that I saw in his quote from my post.)
(P.S. Anyone really, really bored and looking for something to do, can use this as a "spot the difference" puzzle. The script won't change the quote in SD's post, so if you are trying to kill time, "spot the difference".
-
and I love watching them and thinking "Have you worked out how to get that home?*
Do you REALLY think it works that way? My guess is they keep the coins for the next game and mail the check out in 3-6 months. A former classmate was on Jeopardy and he was eventually paid - quite a few months later. You would be amazed at the non-public stuff that is in appearance contracts for shows like that.
Taking home the cash as coins is about as real as those house hunting shows where the couple discusses and picks one of three house ..... which is actually one they already owned before filming started.

Spoilsport :P
Actually I used to agree with you, but then the host came out and said that they really do give it in pound coins. And although I am not gullible enough to believe everything hosts say, there have been a hell of a lot of jackpot winners since the show started, and if he had been lying, Twitter and Facebook would have been awash with past winners calling him out. It wasn't. And I also doubt that the host would be stupid enough to say this if it were untrue, because he has been on TV long enough to know the career ruining media storm that might follow such a lie.

Just finished 3rd season of Ozark on Netflix. Some crazy plot twists for sure!
Now watching Chernobyl on HBO Max. Intense and incredible.
Watched a few episodes of Space Force. Some funny stuff, not sure if it's funny enough.
I might check out How to Get Away with Murder.
-
I've not seen Ozark but have heard lots of good things about it. I'll get to it, eventually!
Chernobyl was very good, indeed. I'm glad you're enjoying it.
I do like Space Force. There is a goodness in it that I find appealing. It's not high art, but is fun.
There are so many good things out there to watch and so little time to watch everything!

Hi MooseMom! :waving;
I agree about Space Force. So topical right now, and silly. :clap;
-
Hi, okarol! I hope all is well with you and that no one in your family has the covid cooties.
Coincidentally, I've finished Space Force just last night, and again, there is a sweetness about the show that is comforting. I do hope we will see a Season 2! I suspect we will need lots of fun silliness sooner rather than later.

We are all good - super cautious in our self-quarantine bubble to keep Jenna and her kidney transplant safe. No contact with any outsiders until California numbers are greatly improved. xoxox

currently watching reruns of Hell's Kitchen

Just watched "All the King's men" (1949) with Broderick Crawford (great actor & very convincing indeed) and it certainly is one of the best movies and very thought-provoking !!!

I am currently watching The Crown on Netflix, and I find it really interesting
-
I'm watching so many things right now. We're re-entering the Star Trek universe with "Picard" and "Discovery". Staying in the sci-fi genre, we're also watching "The Expanse".
I'm also watching two foreign language tv series on Netflix which I'm really enjoying. One is the Spanish drama "Money Heist" which is a crime thriller with a twist, and the other is "Call My Agent", which is a French comedy about a talent agency based in Paris. The hook is the appearance in each episode of a real actor who sort of plays a parody of themselves. The fourth and final season has just been released on Netflix, and Sigourney Weaver loved the series so much that she asked to be in an episode, script unseen! It is very funny, sophisticated, and clever.
Does anyone here like foreign language tv/movies? Or, perhaps I should say "non-English".
-
Does anyone here like foreign language tv/movies? Or, perhaps I should say "non-English".
Hello MooseMom and yes, I love to watch non-English-movies and YouTube makes it ever so easy and assists us a lot to keep up with different languages and to keep “those little grey cells” busy. I particularly love to watch political French movies, they are often extremely well thought through and I also love to watch Italian fun movies and/or German soul-searching-movies and it is inspiring and great fun. I also love to watch English and American movies, especially the 1930-1950’s classics.
It is great fun and might even be a good idea to start watching a fascinating film in a non-English-language with English or whatever subtitles etc., because that helps to either learn a new language or it helps to “bush up” an almost forgotten language, which can be such a wonderful positive experience... and ... it is never too late to learn something new, even if it is a new language and YouTube is just really great for us all to be there at this moment in time ...
-
I can't stand dubbed films, so we always watch with English subtitles. I really enjoy listening to the various accents. For instance, in Spain's "Money Heist", you can tell that some of the characters are from the south of the country just from their accent.
A really great political tv series is from Belgium, called "Borgen", which is the name of their parliament. I know it was very popular in the UK, but I am not sure where you would access it. It was so popular that they are reassembling the original cast and are doing a new set of episodes.
You're right...it's never too late to learn something new.
-
We have started watching Mandalorian with my wife recently. I'm a big Star Wars fan but couldn't have the time to watch the great series so far. The only problem is my wife really hates any sci-fi.. But anyway it's making me happy to see that she's getting along even though she doesn't like it. Last year we have watched all the Star Wars movies at our property in Lisbon (https://tranio.com/portugal/lisbon/) with my daughter for the first time. Now, watching Mandalorian with my wife is the second best thing in my life...

Repeats of Dr Who on Flix (pre JF episodes) Matt Smith et al are brilliant.
Also loads of stuff on Netflix Tribes of Europa is very enjoyable. Looking forward to some new series Lucifer :) Fantastic!

I really like New Amsterdam on Netflix right now. It kinds of reminded me of The Good Doctor because of the hospital setup and all. Great show!

Hello Hereware and thanks for the idea. I just had it checked-up and tried to understand "New Amsterdam" and perhaps it might be on Youtube soon?
... Mind you, I sometimes experience some difficulties in understanding new movies and the "murmured" spoken language, which is often hard to understand for people, whose first language is not English...
... But in most of the old movies one can always understand every single word and the actors also made a great effort "in the olden days" to speak very clearly ... :grouphug;
-
Hi Kristina,
I'm not sure it's gonna be on Youtube anytime soon. I think it's exclusive on Netflix.
I feel you. Some of the shows and movies now are hard to understand especially when the actors are like whispering or some sort. I think that's why subtitles are made, it's not just for those international films. I think they also know it's hard to understand some actors sometimes.
-
I like that one too. It's ironic that he has cancer.
-
I mostly watch series on Netflix like Who Killed Sara, Lupin and recently Shadow and Bone
-
Who Killed Sarah is not English though, right?
-
Check out the New Amsterdam. Great show.

Just had a chance to watch a semi-documentary with brilliant actors about Saddam Hussein : The Rise and Fall of Saddam. A most interesting and brilliantly played docudrama...

I've been watching The Incredible Dr. Pol on Disney+. I love watching veterinary shows because I tend to learn a lot from them. Dr. Pol's practice is in Central Michigan, so a lot of his patients are large animals like cows and horses, but they've had some camels, zebras, and anything else you might think of

The Kingdon on Netflix is a thrilling show.

Young Harry Houdini - 1987
A biographical movie about the magician Harry Houdini (1874 - 1926) who, as a youngster, ran away from home and joined the travelling show of "Dr. Grimaldi", where he learned the tricks of a magician and a little mystery from his Indian assistant, too...
This movie is perhaps mainly about the difference between looking and seeing ...

"Pocketful of Miracles" is a 1961 American comedy film and can be watched - at the moment - on YouTube, starring Bette Davis and Glenn Ford, and directed by Frank Capra, filmed in Panavision.
A lovely cheer-up comedy with lots of laughs and some very clever and wonderfully witty one-liners ... :waving;
P.S. Before I forget, Peter Falk presents himself in this movie at his very very best ...

Hello - I haven't posted in a long time but always like seeing if there's something new and interesting to watch.
I am currently watching "Only Murders in the Building" with Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez. It's on Hulu. Liking it so far.
Have been trying to stick with "Succession" but it's up and down for me.
I was watching "Handmaid's Tale" - so much stress that I am taking a break.
Hope you're all well and finding good stuff to watch as we plod along in this seemingly never ending pandemic.
-
Hi Okarol! So nice to see your familiar name here.
I could not stick with "Only Murders in the Building" except I did love watching Selena Gomez (CKD warrior) interacting with the old dudes.
I agree about "Handmaids Tale". I watched the first season but I'm finally acknowledging that highly tense entertainment doesn't work for me.
I recently subscribed to Acorn TV (Turns out I meant to subscribe to Britbox so I could watch the series based on the Cormoran Strike books. Oh well, maybe next year). On Acorn TV, we've been watching the Australian series "Jack Irish" and enjoying it very much. We had previously watched "Mystery Road" (I think on Amazon Prime), a movie which was great and the lead actor has a part in "Jack Irish". It turns out there are only maybe 10 actors in all of Australia or all of the UK and it's fun watching them in all their roles.
Anyone else find their TV taste is changing? I stumbled about the Turner Classic Movie channels (who knew we had them?) and it made me think of the old days of live TV when you'd turn on the TV and find yourself in the middle of a movie and it was all good.
-
SooMK, we have AcornTV and have been enjoying several shows, though we have yet to start Jack Irish. We liked Mystery Road but have not yet seen the second season. For something a bit lighter, we're watching "My Life is Murder" when for season 2 has relocated to New Zealand. It's always fun to see someplace "foreign".
We're watching Star Trek: Discovery and are rewatching Babylon 5, a sci fi series from the mid 90s that seems very prescient.
On Netflix, we've just finished Hellbound which was fascinating and creative. Also out of S. Korea, I've got two eps left of "Crash Landing On You" which is very sweet while also being thrilling. I'm about to start the last five episodes, just released on Netflix, of Money Heist, a, well, heist story out of Spain. Wild and wonderful, and you find yourself rooting for the criminals.
My TV taste is changing in that I will no longer watch crime dramas/police procedurals that feature serial psycho killers of young women whose bodies always end up being found in some disrobed state. I don't find targeted violence against young women to be entertaining.
I'd like to subscribe to BritBox, but I don't want to spend yet more money on another streaming service. I don't enjoy spending too much time on my couch! There is so much fascinating shows from all over the world to entertain and teach us.

My favourite all time cheer-up British Comedy is : Only Fools and Horses and here is a compilation of :
BEST MOMENTS EVER: 40th Anniversary Compilation | Only Fools and Horses | BBC Comedy Greats
... and as one fan of Only Fools and Horses - fans wrote :
One of the hallmarks of great comedy is being able to watch it time and time again, know exactly when the punchlines are coming, yet still laugh at them! A wonderful show - great casting, well acted and superbly written. A few quick examples - coffee and gravy, the Shadow, Trigger's broom, "rhinoceros", the auction scene, Arnie in the ambulance. I could go on!

Only Fools and Horses, along with One Foot in the Grave, are examples of absolutely brilliant telly. I miss those shows.
-
I am going to have to check out this Only Fools and Horses.
We just finished Season Four of Jack Irish. It got so dark and sad but I liked it very much.
I'm with you MM on the violence to women. I don't know if it has always bothered me so much, but it definitely does now.
I am more likely to bail on shows than I used to be because there is so much choice. Sometimes you need to watch several episodes to give it a fair shot.
Thanks for the recommendations.

The introduction to this wonderful true Ron Clark Story reads as follows:
1998. Ron Clark, still relatively early in his career, leaves his stable life teaching at an elementary school in his suburban North Carolina hometown, the school where he is appreciated by both his fellow teachers and his students for his innovative teaching methods which results in raising test scores. Instead, he decides to look for a teaching job at a tough New York inner city school where he feels he can be more useful. He eventually finds a job at Inner Harlem Elementary School, where the students are segregated according to their potential. As Clark is white and "nice" looking, Principal Turner wants to assign him to the honors class, especially as Turner's job security depends on good test scores. Clark, however, wants to take the most disadvantaged class. He quickly learns that it will be a battle of wills between himself and his disruptive students to see who can outlast the other. But he also learns that he has to understand them, both individually and collectively ...

Nice to see you too!
TCM is a favorite standby when I want to see something good.
I don't have Acorn TV or Britbox.
My husband is watching "Under the Banner of Heaven" on Hulu, says it's good but I haven't started it.
I am watching "Barry" on HBO MAX and plan to check out "Hacks" too.
A friend said "The Americans" is good, so may save that for later.
My favorite ongoing series so far have been "Better Call Saul", "Peaky Blinders" and "Ozark" and I look forward to seeing more.
-
I love Peaky Blinders, okarol, and am looking forward to seeing the final season once it gets to Netflix here in the US in a few weeks' time.
I've just finished The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. Also watching Yellowstone, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, and The First Lady. I have several eps of Call The Midwife on DVR I haven't seen yet.
I recently finished a Korean rom-com called Crashing into You on Netflix that I thoroughly enjoyed.
Also finished The Last Kingdom, also on Netflix.
I had watched all of Borgen when it was on some years ago and am thrilled that it is back! I'll watch the first ep tomorrow! Can't wait!
I suppose this is the pandemic's silver lining. More time to read and watch cool shows from all over the world.

"Miracle of the White Stallions", Arthur Hiller, 1963 - YouTube
Wonderful movie and reliably true to facts ...
In 1945 the fate of Vienna's famous Lipizzaner stallions hangs into balance. American
General George Smith Patton Jr. could save them but first he asks to see them perform.
Miracle of the White Stallions is a 1963 American adventure film released by Walt Disney starring Robert Taylor (playing Alois Podhajsky), Lilli Palmer, and Eddie Albert. It is the story of the evacuation of the Lipizzaner horses from the Spanish Riding School in Vienna during WWII. Major parts of the movie were shot at the Hermesvilla palace in the Lainzer Tiergarten of Vienna, a former hunting area for the Habsburg nobility. The music for the soundtrack was based on the first movement of Franz Schubert's Marche Militaire no 1, D733.
General George Smith Patton Jr. (11th November 1885 - 21 December 1945 ) was the General in the United States Army who commanded the Seventh United States Army in the Mediterranean theater of WWII, and the Third United States Army in France and Germany after the Allied invasion of Normandy in June 1944. General George Smith Patton Jr. came from a wealthy and distinguished family, riding since childhood. Commissioned into the Cavalry, he represented the United States in the 1912 Olympics in the Modern pentathlon; one of its five events includes Show jumping. He designed the M1913 Cavalry saber (famed as the Patton saber), and went on to become the Cavalry's top instructor, then the Army's first Master of the Sword. Always a devoted rider, even during wartime, he was known until his death for wearing riding breeches and high boots as his distinct personal uniform. He was extremely fair, true to his word and a great man ...

Johannes Vermeer also known as Jan Vermeer (October 1632 – 15 December 1675) was a Dutch Baroque Period painter who specialized in domestic interior scenes of middle-class life. During his lifetime, he was a moderately successful "provincial" genre painter, recognized in Delft and The Hague. Nonetheless, he produced relatively few paintings and evidently was not wealthy, leaving his wife and children in debt at his death... but ... as a painter he was absolute ... not only in his commitment and vision plus his unsurpassed techniques, but also in describing the inner soul not only of people but still-life-moments he so wonderfully brought to us through his very special way of observing and painting ...
