Title: Have Any of You Started a New Hobby While On Dialysis?
Post by: Cordelia on November 12, 2011, 09:26:56 AM
Have any of you started on a new hobby since you've started Dialysis whether at home or on the machine?

I started reading more often, in particular, I started reading one of Dean Koontz's books and I'm really enjoying it so far, it sure helps to pass the time away than just sitting watching the tv     ;D

I started reading al ot more and started getting more into cooking.  Every once in a while I will get a cook book out of the library and just flip through during dialysis.

It's not really a "new" hobby, but since I started dialysis I have gotten back into scale model building (mostly ships and trains). I hadn't done it for years, but I started working on models when I was on the machine, and I've since gotten back into it full time.

Right now, I'm in isolation after transplant. So I'm looking for a new hobby. So far my hobby is looking for a hobby.

I went to an occupy demonstration in my city.  It took me back to the early 70's when I went to anti-Viet Nam demonstrations.
I was surprised.  I expected it to be full of college age kids.  Nope.  Middle age people, frustrated with the way America is going,
turned out in droves.  You would have thought the tea party joined occupy.

Not exactly a hobby, but I've started taking some online classes.  I figure I have a lot of reading time, and if/when I can get a transplant, I'll eventually need a good job to help pay for those meds.   :)

I tried to go through some online classes. They weren't actual graded classes, but all the recorded class lectures and class material were online, so I could use it to pretend I was taking a class.  :rofl; I only made it about halfway before I lost interest.  :(

Not totally a hobby - I am learning Italian online.  I work at our Cruise Ship Pier as a Multilingual Information Officer (English, French, Spanish) and we have lots of Italians coming.  I can already tell them a few of the basic things, but I want to do more.  By the way (bragging now) I got 99% in my first Stage One test!  Dialysis is a good time for me to work on it.

Interesting, Whamo,
I also went to have a look at our occupy-demonstration at St. Paul’s Cathedral in London
and I was surprised to find only a few College-age-kids, but mainly middle-aged and elderly man and women.

I talked to a few and noticed that every one of them was there for a different reason,
i.e.“divorced fathers with no chance to see their children”,
“divorced fathers who lost their family, their home and their job”
due to our very messy divorce-system which seems to victimize men.

I even came across voices, who, like me, found themselves without any NHS-health care
at a very vulnerable point in their life (pre-dialysis ESRF without NHS-medical care in my case etc.)

I also met people who just could not take the ongoing corruption
in our government and banks any longer.

The people I spoke to hope to be taken notice of
through their occupy-demonstration at St. Paul’s Cathedral.

I do hope their occupy-demonstration is not being exploited
because I cannot figure out who exactly initiated this movement
to occupy-demonstrate at St. Paul’s Cathedral in the first place.

I also wonder how they were able to put up their tents unchallenged etc.
and I was even more surprised to hear that St. Paul’s authorities
try very hard to “get rid of the occupy-demonstration”,
because St. Paul’s Cathedral is really supposed to give Christian Sanctuary to people
(i.e. Alexandre Dumas – The Hunchback of Notre Dame etc)...

But I am very glad I went to St. Paul’s Cathedral because it showed me
that I am not singled-out and victimized "personally".

Hopefully these occupy-demonstrations bring positive results in the future.

I read a LOT more. In fact, I think I'm halfway through the Left Behind series, which is like 15 books or something nutty like that. Oh-and I frequent some little forum called IHD.  :2thumbsup;

Btw-BrandiLeigh, I am going to see Wicked for the THIRD time when it comes to Jacksonville in January. :)

I think the secretary/clerk of our unit is bringing in a book for me to read. Souds like she's interested in letting me borrow one of hers and it sounds really good. It's about a woman who fought breast cancer using natural remedies, instead of traditional things. It sounds really interesting. Said she'd bring it in for me this week.      :)

if you mean a hobby that you do while on dialysis?  As for me, I have taken up reading again.  But you know what?  i could probably read for four hours straight at home if I found a good book, but, HAVING to be in that dialysis chair for four hours - I get tired of whatever i chose to do.  But I'm always looking for good books now because so far they're my favorite new hobby (or renewal of old one)

Interesting:  I used to love to read, but never felt I had the time.  Now, I have forced time....lesson learned.....

This week I started writing my Yearly Christmas cards. I have gotten a lot of them done while sitting in the chair. I find I just have too many distractions at home to get motivated and sit down and write them....so.....may as well get it all done while being strapped down to a chair for 4 hours         :rofl;        :rofl;

Our unit is supposed to be starting an exercise program while on D this coming year, I think maybe in January. I have volunteered to be a guinea pig.   It's a cycle and apparently it's done in the first couple of hours of D, every 30 mins on, 30 mins off is how it works. I can't wait to start it. It will pass some time then too!

I started playing video games on my daughter's DS.  I also read and did suduko puzzle books.  When I had my chest catheter I was able to embroidery or knitting while on Hemo.  I was always kind of worried that I'd get blood on the things I was working on but It never happened.  On PD I studied for school and watched a bunch of movies.
