Title: Unresponsive...
Post by: Rerun on October 28, 2011, 09:46:34 AM
I passed out at dialysis this morning.  I've never done that before.  She told me I was done, so I sat up and my calf started to cramp so I asked her if I could push on her leg.... then I felt sick so I told her I needed fluid.  Then all I remember is her yelling at me.. my name and to pay attention to her.  She told me I was unresponsive for a little while and I was trying to talk but nothing was coming out.  Scary hua?  I didn't see any white light.....

Have you passed out before??

Jeeze don't do that again

What were your blood pressures going on?

There was a time when if I stood up too quick I could blackout, it was due to low BP

I did that the first week I was doing PD. Was at home, wife was with me, all this stuff was new. I hadn't eaten during the day (ok, dumb me and I know better now). Hooked up to do my afternoon exchange, the room started spinning and away I went. Scared wife to death. She was ready to call 911, but I had her call the on call PD nurse instead. We determined I was really dehydrated, that and lack of food during the day did me in.
I was threatened with physical mayhem if I every let that happen again  :Kit n Stik;

Re, I'm so sorry to hear about your unpleasant experience.  First you had a cold during the Vegas trip, and  now this!   :banghead;  Anyway I hope you don't have to go through that again.

What a scary thing to have happen!  Are you OK now?  Do you know what caused this?

in 6+ years on dialysis, I've passed out about once a year...keep a close watch on your blood pressure...listen for the machine to beep if your bp is too low...get a hypertonic when you still have at least an hour left..works best for me....Yes, coming around with nurses & techs yelling in your face is no fun...worst part for me is that when I pass out I always bite down on my tongue really hard & make it bloody/bruised

Well, whadja go and do that for? Stop it!  :Kit n Stik;

No, seriously, that must have been frightening as hell. Do they know why it happened? Did they take off too much fluid?

I've never passed out (yet) but I came kinda close this morning. BP was 80/47 standing and I started getting dizzy. Laid down and was okay.

I have had that happen four times. The cramping and nausea then out I would go. The nurses did a great job bringing me out of it with saline and constantly talking to me.That darned old dry weight thing, lose a few pounds and watch out.

my guess is low blood pressure and even dehydration. that was my problem summer of 2010, but i never passed out. don't do it again, we need you. let us know how you're doing.

I've done it a couple of times. It's not fun.  I've gotten to a point where I recognize the feeling and can get someone's attention before I pass out.  Sometimes I have no warning at all.

I have this thing where, when I stand up, even if my blood pressure isn't very low, it will drop fast.  It doesn't even need to drop that far, 5 points, but it's the fast drop that does me in.

Yes, I'm sure it was low b/p but by the time she was able to push the button I was conscious and talking to her and it was 101 over something.  So we don't know what it dropped to.

When I was sick I lost weight so I lowered my dry weight.  I guess my appetite has been back for a little while so we 'raised' my dry weight.

Uggh yeah not fun.   :P

Thank you for your sympathy because it made me feel better.   :angel;

awww Rerun... wow what an experience. I'm wondering if you were sick, were you on any extra meds for that? Just a thought that  having those extra things in your systemmay have played a part. Hmmm.... just a thought. Like you said though you lost some weight when you were not feeling well. I found it. It's sitting on my hips by the way. I was wondering who lost it lol. Hope you're feeling better now!  And yeah, I did near pass out once. As a teen I took tennis lesson at a local tennis park with a girlfriend . A hot August morning we started lessons. My instructor served a few slow balls over the net to start us out. Everything got real bright white and I felt nauseous. I mean bright white and I was so dizzy. The tennis balls came over in slow motion and kinda looked like when a Dandelion blooms into that white puffy  thing slowly floats through the air. Mike friend thought I was pretending i was drunk lol. They took me to the food stand a gave me M & M's and a coke. We callled it a day. As I look back I can see it being very dangerous to start going until your BP has been completely regulated. I hope that never happens to you again.

Yikes Rerun!  I think Blokey passed out twice whilst on haemoD (both times due to low BP) but it was when he first began having dialysis.  Hope you're right as rain now lovely!

Last night went fine.  The tech said what happened to me, happens and they just start fluid return and people come around.

I won't start the "but... what if"  because then I won't be able to sleep there anymore.   :waving;

I have had that problem, mainly because techs feel that other things are more important then a patient crashing.

3 months ago when i first started hemo, i had to pretty much quit taking all of my high blood pressure meds, bc i would bottom out, and even on my off days it would still run low. but now my problem is just the opposite now my blood pressure is high and it wont come down. It stays high the entire treatment, and even gets higher toward the end, last tuesday it was up to almost 200/130 and my head hurt so bad, took all my blood pressure meds that i was suposed to be on. just curious as to whats up with that. also my pulse is fast... i used to run 60s and 70s when i was on PD, and now on  hemo i never go below 100 ever, but the end of my treatment im 130s and perfectly calm :waiting;

bleija, are you on clonidine, by chance? I had similar problems when I was on clonidine and metoprolol.
Title: Re: Unresponsive...
Post by: bleija on October 31, 2011, 10:17:23 PM
i have been on clonidine, but was told that u cant start and stop that one so i stopped taking it, and im not on metroprolol, just hydralazine 50mg and lisinoprol 20mg, those are the only BP meds im taking
Title: Re: Unresponsive...
Post by: Restorer on October 31, 2011, 10:44:20 PM
It looks like hydralazine can cause rapid heartrate, but I don't see anything about increased blood pressure. Lisinopril is pretty benign as far as side effects go, aside from increased potassium.

Maybe talk to your neph about it and ask if adding a beta blocker would be a good idea.

Sorry to hear about your crashing rerun.  The same thing happened to me about 2 weeks ago, I barfed all over the place :puke;, then bp dropped and I went out. Last week I was infiltrated on Monday and was wiped out for the whole week, and then we lost power for 4 days.  It has been the most horrible 2 weeks on dialysis that I have experienced so far, but its a new week, I'm hoping for the better :rant;

ive been on hydralazine for over 2 years now and never had any issues with it, also ever since i started hemo, i been having chest pain not heart related, but different areas of my chest and back, and its shap pain when i breath. i tell the doc and he prescribes me prednisone, and while im taking it it goes away, but the last day<the lowest dose with the tapered doses> it comes back only in a different spot... it started in my shoulders each side thn my mid back on the side, and not its on my left side feels like a knife trying to saw me in half, oh and laying down is not an option, i feel like i cant breathe... i feeel like the doctor is thinking im a junkie, bc i keep coming back the last day, but its unbearable, if i could breath it wouldnt be so bad... any ideas

this doesn't sound "normal". I wouldn't care what your doc thinks. Did he check liquid in your lungs?

Post by: bleija on November 05, 2011, 04:49:03 PM
well luckily my doc doesnt think im a junkie, and actually gave me something long term for inflammation, the only thing is the side effects, it makes me extremely nauseous, i hoping that i will get used to it, but my weight is droping fast...my heart rate is still flying, it was 150 on my standing when i left the center today. its really starting to concern me, they gave me blood a fewe weeks ago and my heartrate when back to normal, i really dnt want to get blood again...
