Title: The Girlie Glamour Topic
Post by: MooseMom on May 06, 2010, 01:42:22 PM
OK, so CKD isn't synonymous with "glamour", but if anyone could use a bit of it, it's us.  What is your favourite cosmetic or "glamourous" product?  Is there a fragrance you never leave the house without?  A moisturizer you would die for?  A gadget or gizmo that transforms you into the first IHD runway model?  A pair of shoes you killed for? :rofl;  This is the place to tell us about your favourite beauty secret!

This is not exactly glamorous but I buy socks :rofl; the first thing I notices when I started D was everyones feet showed. I started buying all the bright weird socks I could find. Yesterday my feet were covered up and the PA had to check to see what socks I was wearing. So if you know of any place to buy cool socks, please post!

Holy overpriced, Rerun!  That better be a really big bottle! My cheap little tube of Neutragena daily moisturizer has 30 spf.  Maybe I'll just put it on twice.....

Right now, my must have is hairspray to hold down the dandelion frizz that my hair has turned into, thanks to the prednisone and all the other transplant complications.

What?  Is he a stockholder in the company or something?  What kind is it?  Is it a prescription sunscreen?  I do believe in sunscreen...I have gels and creams and sprays stocked all over the house, but I never paid $60 for it.  Good grief.

I love this topic since I'm in Beauty school!! I love Mario Badescu products for treating my breakouts and my fave lip balm as of right now is Burts Bees!

Jo Malone has a facial line that is so lovely; she is known mostly in the US as a perfumier, but in England, her skincare line is well-known, too.  I love her geranium night cream, but it is quite pricey, so I think I may indulge when I feel I am really in the need for a giant pick-me-up.  I also like her French Lime Blossom fragrance.  I met her in London once; I was in her shop when she came in.

Don't let me near a Sephora...you'll have to send in special forces to extract me.  I love their lip glosses.

Burt's Bees products are made locally here.  We use lots of their items.   I put the lip balm in my Secret Santa package this year.

Hmmmmm, I am still thinking of what my must have thing is.

Went to Macy's a department store here in the USA, pretty sure they are in other areas as well. I was excited because they now have a MAC counter!! I have only ever ordered a couple items from their website, because they can be pricey. Anywho I bought a Dazzle-Glass lip gloss in Baby Sparks, and LOVE IT! It's a tad sticky but i kinda like that since it stays on longer, and the color is kind of a light pinky coral with multi colored glitters. I bought a powder foundation and concealer as well. They will match your skin tone so you dont have to worry about picking a wrong shade, and I also love their concealer it covers awesome! And I also love the Bobbi Brown Tinted Eye Brightener , it is great for dark circles

I bought one of those mineral powder foundations not too long ago.  I've only used it once, and I really liked it, but I'm going to save it for special occasions.  I don't use foundation often, but when I do, I use Chanel.  (so I can be the most Interesting Woman in the World...)  I use Laura Mercier's tinted foundation which I like a lot, especially in the summer.

I'm too pink for coral colors, so I'm jealous of you , karen, that you can use a coral lip gloss.  Ooooh, colored glitters!  That sounds really nice and girlie!

I LOVE Shiseido sunscreen.( Macy's)  Derm Doc suggested it. Doesn't make you look all white and pasty after you put it on. I also can't live without Estee Lauder eye cream ( pink jar) . I will give up some things to cut corners but you can take away my eye cream when you can pry it from my French  manicured hands.

 :bump;

We need a bit of glamour around here.  I haven't bought anything nice for myself in the longest time, and it shows.  I need a haircut; my husband likes my hair long, but I hate faffing about with it.  My hair is fine but I have so much of it, and it gets everywhere.  I found a hair draped over the jar of mustard in the fridge!  ACK!  It's the middle of winter and I'm inert.

I've become more sensitive to smells.  I always liked wearing fragrance but lately, I can't stand smelling the same thing all day long.  Anyone else experience this?  Anyone know of a light fragrance that's nice?

Anyone get a nice piece of jewelry for Christmas you'd like to tell us about?

My mom passed away this past summer, and she left me her jewelry.  She didn't wear a lot, but she had a beautiful gold and diamond watch that I now have.  I've never had anything quite so exquisite.  It's amazing what a lovely piece of jewelry can make you feel like.

Anyone come across a new cosmetic product you want to tell about?  Has anyone found beauty in a jar yet?

I'm more into the jewelry than the make-up.  I make jewelry, so I wear my own, plus I bought some at all the after season sales - nothing like 80% off to make you want to splurge on real garnets and diamond "accents".  (It's never a chip now - notice that?  ;) )

My new fav for makeup is mascara that my sis suggested - Covergirl LashblastVolume.  Cheap, but it stays on - works wonders for me.

I'm doing that office/business casual look these days, so make-up has become a must, not an indulgence.  Ever see the studies that say that women who work in a professional environment who don't wear makeup are considered less competent and less intelligent?  Sad but true.  So, pass the lipstick, please - I need a job!

I was never a girly girl.. I was never into make up and perfumes.. I could never wear make up anyway.. I can feel it, and it just drives me crazy.. even as a kid, I couldn't wear Halloween make up for long, because it would drive me nuts.

That being said, because of the amount of it that has fallen out over the last few years, I'm rather vain when it comes to my hair.  I'll try anything I can find that will make it look and/or feel thicker.  I got one of those brand sampler boxes from Proctor and Gamble, and it had Pantene shampoo and conditioner for thin hair.  I LOVE this stuff.  It's not making my hair any thicker, but it does look thicker, and it's a great boost to the self esteem.

also, if any of you ladies know of any way to remove hair without tearing off or burning off the skin, please let me know.  I'm not sure why, but since I was a teenager, I've been able to grow a nice beard.  It tends to throw people off sometimes.  I use Nair on it about every 6 weeks, but it burns really badly.

I'd love to design and make my own jewelry!  I have absolutely no creative ability whatsoever.  I like jewelry made with semi-precious stone; I'm  a huge fan of jade and lapis lazuli.

Riki, there are so many hair removal products/kits out there that surely you could find something better than Nair.  Good question, though.

Nioxin products are supposed to be good for thickening thin hair.  At least, that's what my mom told me.

There are some really good, light cosmetics out there if you want to use something but don't like the feel of them.  I know what you mean.  I usually wear just a tinted moisturizer that has a sunscreen; Laura Mercier's is very good.  It doesn't feel like I have anything on.  A brush of mascara and that's about it.  Oh, and something on my lips, usually just a gloss.  I don't like how my lips feel without something a bit glossy on them.

Riki, I've had good luck with some of those little hair remover pads - it's essentially pink extra-fine sandpaper, but it fuzzes off the fine hairs nicely.  Also, really, there is no truth to the myth that shaving will make the hair grow in thicker.  A little electric shaver works wonders and does them quickly.  (I'd blame it all on the prednisone, but I think my Greek grandfather gets his fair share of the blame, too.)

There's a kiosk set up in the local mall that does threading.  It does seem to be quick and relatively painless.   Just be sure to insist that they give you normal looking eyebrows, not the high fashion over-arched ones.  Most of the clients I've seen leaving the booth look permanently startled... ;D

I've never heard of threading before.. I doubt anyone around here does it, and it looks kind of expensive..

I have a set of those pads.  I use them for around my mouth, because that area burns a lot worse. I've had blisters there before.

I don't want to do anything with my eyebrows. they're fine. *L*  it's the sideburns, chin, and neckbeard that I want to be rid of.. seriously, if I didn't have boobs, I could pass for a guy.

Today I crossed a major milestone.

Yeah, you reach a point where you are fine with admitting you aren't a teenager anymore.  I wore a pair of hand-me-down jeans from my sis the other day.   They were the ones that stretch as you wear them, so what started out as a fine length was slowly becoming too much for the low heels I had on.  I commented to someone that I needed to hem them or save them for wearing with heels.  She pointed out that it's trendy to wear them long and get the cuffs all ripped to shreds.  I pointed out that I'm not 16 anymore and had no intention of going back to shredded clothes as a fashion statement!

Same reason I laughed when the shoe sales girl chirruped that the tall boots I was trying on would look fab with jeggings.  Not on my hips, they won't!

"Jeggings."  Oh dear.

Have you heard about the new "Ex-girlfriend" jeans for men?  They're supposed to be skinny jeans for men.  I'd love to see that; I haven't had a good laugh lately (well, those Charlie Sheen interviews were pretty funny).

I had custom perfume made up from a booth on Esty - it's mostly lily of the valley with a touch of fresh cut grass and spring rain scents mixed in.  Ahhhhh - it's lovely.   It doesn't last long since it's homemade, so I really wish I could get it professionally made!

It is difficult to explain but is smells like a fragrant (talc) powder, floral but very mild, not sweet. I love it. It is just a hint of something feminine and spring.
It is funny how a smell can bring back memories............ (moms are special)

Oh my goodness...Sephora was PACKED!  It was such fun, though!!  I saw a thousand and one things that I'd love to have, but how many colours of lip gloss can a girl wear at one time, ya know?

One thing I did need, though, was a good body cream.  A saleslady came up to me and asked if I needed help finding anything, and I went through my story about probably having to start dialysis soon but that I was on the transplant waiting list (I don't ever let an opportunity pass to mention this; you never know who might want to donate, right?), and that my skin just seemed so dry and fragile.  She directed me to a clinical aesthetician who worked with people with "special needs" (that made me laugh), so I repeated my story to HER.  She directed me to a very nice cream that I think might really help.  I also explained that I swim a lot in the summer and that I would like a spray-on, leave-in conditioner that would give my hair some volume. (My hair just seems so flat; I think it's just more age than anything).  So, I got a couple of nice things to make me feel especially girlie.

But the really fun part was when I somehow entered into a conversation with someone who was either a transvestite or transgender; I'm not sure which, and I wasn't going to ask!  We had so much fun looking at all of the makeup and the nail colours!  S/he had really good taste!  I learned a few things from him/her.  We decided that Smashbox's primer was the best of the lot! :clap;

Strangly enough, i cant stand wearing makeup, and i dont think ive ever bought anything makeup wise anywhere but walmart LOL because i rarely wear it, and it goes bad... BUT
i do love my black eyeliner and red lip stick, its pretty much all i wear, unless im going certain places...

I actually got some Chanel for christmas, and i love the way it smells on my aunt, but omg... on me... NO! (btw, if u ever try that aphrodesiac spray from the "slumber party" make sure u try before u buy!!! it smelled like dirty diaper on me!!!-- and smelled great on everyone else!)

I have to confess that I can't imagine going around smelling like a dirty diaper...

I don't wear much makeup myself.  In the summer, I use a tinted moisturizer with a sunscreen.  In the winter, I may use a light foundation just to make me look a bit brighter, and I'll swipe on a bit of mascara and a lip gloss, and that's about it.  I do like to polish my toenails in the summer; I like unusual colors like a foresty green, a turquoise or a shimmery gold.

Uggh - worst part about returning to a professional environment - the reality that how well and how often I wear make-up can be directly related to how intelligent and competent my superiors assume I am.  Make a difference in my eventual pay, too.

I think that's true.  Your appearance does make a difference in how you are perceived.  Thing is, though, that these days, it doesn't take a lot of gunk to make you look polished and professional.  There have been so many cool technological advances in cosmetics that you can get a polished look in about the same time you can wash your face and brush your teeth.  It's not fair that your intelligence is judged by your appearance, but I think we might all do it to some degree without even realizing it.

This actually happens to me to! I love the smell of Clinique Happy Heart but it doesn't smell that good on me. For the  most parts it seems like I put on perfumes and my skin just sucks them up or something. Someone told me that some people have certain body chemistrys that don't mesh well with perfumes. weird?

the only makeup I ever wore was some frosty blue eyeshadow.. and that was when I was a teenager. after a while, I stopped wearing it. I figured no one could see it through my glasses.

anything else, I couldn't leave on.  It would drive me crazy, because I could feel it.  I can't even use chapstick. It just drives me nutty.  I'm pretty positive that not wearing makeup has kept me from some front desk jobs in hotels.

Okay, someone shoot me now.  They recalled all of my favorite brand of hair dye.  I finally found one that matched perfectly; only covered the gray without changing the rest of my color; washed out gradually in a month so I never had a root line; and looked great even if I goofed and left it on too long.  And it's GONE!

Everything else brings out all the red in my hair.  I look like Little Orphan Annie now that mine has soooooo much more curl.  Uggh.  Really, I'm perfectly content with my natural light brown.  I don't want to be a ginger!

I have a confession to make.

I have gotten so tired of burning my face with Nair, that I've just plain stopped.  My mother keeps bugging me to do it.  She says that it looks dirty, but I do not want to burn my face anymore.  Every day, I look more and more like my father, who has a full beard.  The only thing I've done lately, is cut the little hairs around my mouth with a pair of scissors so that they wouldn't go in my mouth when I was eating something

I've done sugaring, but I've never done wax... I had the sugaring done by a friend who was in a beauty school.  My face was red and looked irritated afterwords, but I don't remember if it burned like the Nair does

I tried to take a picture of it, to show you guys, but I ended up with far too many pictures looking up my nose... *L*

Riki, the idea that a woman can't shave her face because the hair will grow back thicker is total bunk.  Get a nice woman's electric razor.  It takes only a minute to defuzz and it doesn't irritate anything.
As a Greek woman on prednisone, believe me, some days you just don't have the energy for all the plucking and fussing the other methods involve.

This is really thick.. it's not "a hair here and a hair there" it's a full beard.  It's dark, and my mom says that it looks dirty.  She's right, but I'm just so tired of burning my face with creams

btw, I didn't know there was a such thing as a woman's electric razor

Yup, although I'm not sure there's much difference between the man's and woman's version except the pink or purple plastic!  But they do make them specifically for women.

ok... I'm wondering something now. I stopped shaving my legs about a year after I started, because I didn't like the numb, tingly feeling I had on my skin afterwords. It lasted a few hours.  I"m wondering if I was to use a razor on my face, if it would do the same thing

I've been shaving my face (well, sides of chin and upper lip) since 1885, date of my first transplant.  I use a man's electric razor, first a Braun and now a Phillips Sensotouch 3D.  I prefer a wet shave razor so I use a good face wash cleanser in the morning and shave with the lather from that.  This way I avoid any extra products on my face that could irritate the skin.  I find that a wet shave results in less tugging on the skin which is made even more delicate than usual by the meds like prednisone.  I am blond but the hair is quite coarse and over time the texture of my skin has changed somewhat but no one can tell that I shave and I'm very comfortable with this solution.  I went for electrolysis at one point but found it painful, time consuming and not very effective anyway.

I personally wax for face.

I shave the rest. I'd suggest using conditioner (like for hair) for shaving, it works wonders.

Beauty wise. I prefer to keep it at minimum most days. But this is my usual:

NYC black eyeliner
Covergirl mascara
Covergirl blush (can't remember the name)
Cover girl lipstain
Carmex Strawberry lip balm.

I tend to wear eyeliner and the carmex most days no matter what.

Hair, I like to let my natural "jewfro" roam free. So I usually use

Biotien Hair and conditioner from WF
Paul mitchell hair serum.

And I have a variety of body lotions.

I'm big on perfumes if anything. My favorite right now is a all natural gin blossom one from WF.

I do like to get my nails done. Occasionally. I'm just really bad at keeping up hair appointments and all that fussy stuff. So I do a lot at home. I do get glammed up on occasion. I tend to like to look nice, but would not know for the life of me whats "hot" or "not"

I do have a severe weakness for cute things/dorky things. Especially on Etsy. Oh, and VS. That's a huge weakness. :P

Last year for Mother's Day my daughter took me out for my very first spa pedicure! I LOVED it and got my toenails done in red RED! Now I reward myself with a pedicure for every 10 pounds I lose.  :beer1;

Another pedicure is coming up soon.

As far as makeup, a bit of blush and a touch of shadow and I'm done.

What a wonderful way to reward yourself!  I used to have a facial once a month when I lived in England, and I always so looked forward to it.  I haven't done that since I've been back in the US; maybe I should start.  It was always a nice way to reduce stress.

I've heard that, but never tried it.  Have to remember it for my next trip, so I don't have to drag along the can of cheap men's shaving cream I usually use.

I started trimming my facial hair with a pair of scissors.  It makes it less noticeable, but if you really want to see it, you will.  I've noticed that I've no hair at all on my upper lip, but going towards the corners of my mouth, I do.  I think this is because I burned myself pretty badly on my upper lip with nair.  It was that bad that there were blisters.  I fear doing that to the rest of my face with nair, which is why I'm reluctant to use it

We all take an awful lot of meds that can cause havoc with hair.  Do any of you use any special kind of clarifying shampoo or restorative hair treatments?  My mind's eye can see all sorts of crap polluting my follicles. ::)

I've had the best results with the Biolage shampoos and conditioners.

Although, honestly, if I've got good conditioner, I can use the same bar of Dove soap I use on my face and get the same results as I do with $16 buck a bottle shampoo.

I used Aveda when I was on the hardcore drugs, the one for color-treated hair. I thought it was great, but I also used two leave-in products. Now I use Paul Mitchell, also for color treated, and 3 leave-in products, but I am less happy with results as of the last six months or so.

Could my hair miss being on drugs? :waiting; For the life of me, I cannot get rid of the frizz, even with flat ironing it.

This reminds me that the boys and I need haircuts. We are about a 1/4 inch from hearing Aren't you lucky to have 2 daughters?

Thanks for that, jbeany and Cariad.  I'll check those out.  What I really need is a haircut.  That's my mission for next week if I get clearance to drive.  I haven't had to take narcotics since before leaving the hospital, and I get my staples out on Thursday, so maybe after that, they'll give me permission to drive.

If you're curly, sulfates are supposed to be the worst for causing frizz.  Supposedly, you can also just rinse with conditioner several times and not shampoo at all - but I couldn't hold out the 4 weeks they say to do it in order to get the best results.  My hair is too greasy for that.

I tried not washing my hair for a few days, but it just seemed to get coarser. :waiting; I think the leave-in products I was using were just building up too much. I think I need to drop the Paul Mitchell products and return to Aveda, see if that helps. Liot got his haircut on Tuesday, I'd like to go in next week and get much of mine chopped. Gwyn says he loves long hair but sorry, hon, you're not here, it's so very hot, and I want to have some shape to my hair again. I may have to spring for a real salon, though. My hair is not always the easiest to style.

I was a hand model in the late 70's-early 80's (not as glamorous as it sounds) so I can't live without my old tried and true rosewater glycerin hand lotion plus a mani/pedi every two weeks or so.  I don;t wear makeup unless I am going out for a special occasion, but daily moisturizer and serum (don;t know if they;re helping with the wrinkles but they make me feel better :)) And I have extremely curly hair....started using Salon Grafix Conditioning Cleanser and it is the bomb!

Bleah, job hunting involves real make-up, so I had to break out the mascara, eye liner, shadow, and lipstick.  I'm normally lucky if I get past spot cover and mineral foundation, and a dab of mineral blush so I don't look like a vampire.  Is there anything more irritating than having an eye liner pencil break when you are in a hurry in the morning, and only one eye is done?   :P

I stopped wearing "real" makeup when I stopped working in June.  Now I just make sure my hair is presentable and I have my eyebrows on...I was ready for the grey hair (Which my hairdressers hides very well) but no one told me I would have grey, almost nonexistant eyebrows!  Yes, they are mostly hidden by sunglasses....but still!

I use Laura Mercier's tinted moisturizer because I'm lazy.  It has a fairly high SPF, and it provides not so much coverage as, well, a bit of brightening and color smoothing.  I am pretty religious about using sunscreen, but they make me sweat something awful.  The tinted moisturizer doesn't make me sweat quite so much.  I've just started using one of those BB creams...I bought Smashbox's Photo Ready or something like that.  Now that the weather is cooler, the BB cream is rather nice.  That plus a swipe of mascara and and one of Sephora's lip glosses, and that's pretty much it.

I've been told that the grey in my hair looks quite nice, so I haven't bothered coloring it for years.  But I'm thinking about maybe doing something about the grey now.  I'm not sure I can be bothered.  Maybe I'll just stop thinking about it. ::)  That seems to be the easiest thing to do.

I used to have great gobs of hair, but post surgery and tacrolimus is taking its toll.  I found a few strands of my hair in the refrigerator. ::)  Losing your hair is bad enough without finding it wedged between the butter and the sour cream.

I gave this thread some thought before writing and I came up with an incident that happened yesterday; I spilled my after-shave lotion.  I make my own after-shave lotion a gallon at a time.  It lasts about a year if I shave everyday.  Now the bathroom smells like a used-car salesman after his Aqua-velva shower.  It did clean off the granite counter top.  I suppose I’ll have to clean the whole counter space now.

I remember those golden days when I was lifting weights and had those broad massive pecs.  Worked on those babies a lot, could bounce them up and down to any rock and roll tune.  Alas, gravity has taken over and I may be up to a “B” cup now.  There isn’t even enough for cleavage.  Old age has turned me into a “used to be”.

Then there is hair care.  I have resolved to avoid a comb-over at all costs.  So, I got out the clippers, put on an attachment and gave myself a hair cut.  Made a mess, but I looked good.  I dazzled myself.  Oooo Wee!   Now I might as well be bald.  I do neatly trim my beard.  I don’t suppose any of you ladies do that.  I let the hair grow out and it was all gray.  What happened?  It’s a conspiracy.

I noticed that no one asks for my ID at the liquor store anymore.  That’s a hint? Right?

Dodged a forest fire here, yesterday.  Our good fortune had the wind blowing the fire away from us.  Bombers flew over the house all day long.  Geez, I didn’t know there were other people in the world.

Pre-D  I use to get all glammed up with makeup -  foundation, powder, eye shadow, eye liner, mascara and lip gloss to go to work or school.  Now i keep it simple with a tinted moisterizer and lip gloss.  I might start wearing mascara agani cause my lashes are so light.

GL, you are right to avoid a comb over.  Sooooo not a good look, EVER.

You make your own after-shave lotion?  Now, THAT's cool!  But I confess to being a bit wary that this stuff also cleans granite countertops.  God only knows what it's doing to your face.  LOL!

Rain, it's not always a bad thing to simplify things when circumstances force you to do so.  Gives you more time to do other things, like cycling, right? :thumbup;

I have just discovered nail polish again  at the age of 68. I never used to bother until I read that nail polish makes old hands look younger. It does, I love it. I am now amassing lots of colors, even the granddaughter says they look good.

Moosemom you are so right.  This morning I woke up late and I was able to get out of the house in 30 mins including a shower and blow drying my hair.  It was so quick and easy.

I do get all dolled up when my boyfriend and I go out on a date, which isn't very often, since dates for us  these days include doing sports..  I have also noticed that since i simplified my routine my breakouts have decreased.

The other thing I enjoy is going for a facial a couple of times a year.  I always go once in the spring and once around my b-day.  I better book an appointment soon since my b-day is next week. hehehe
