Thank you everyone. :thx;
By the way, Angie picked out the ring. ;)
-
Good for Angie. What did you do? Take her to the store and say pick it out. I would like some details. Where did you propose? Was it a surprise? Things like that.
-
Congratulations, Angie and Sandman! I'm so happy for both of you, best wishes for a long and happy life together! :clap;
-
I agree, give us the details!
-
no details yet. Sandman has to get his visa and a new job. We are both poor. The wedding will be very small.

Yes I never thought I would ever find anyone patient enough to put up with me and my emotional outbursts! lol :clap;

Sandman sounds like a great individual and you guys make an awesome couple. :)

Big weddings are a pain in the neck. Smaller means less stress. :clap;

Well, lets see.
When I got to the border on November the 5th, Canadian customs held me for over an hour because I inquired about a visa. ::) Why I got the 5th degreee for asking is beyond me. ::) Anyway, I got to Angies place very late but still in time to wish her a happy birthday, on her birthday. But when I got here, she had company over so I didn't ask her then. I didn't feel comfortable proposing in front of her friends, so I waited until the next day. Now, giving that I suck a shopping for a particular womans tastes, I decided to let Angie pick the ring she likes. So on November the 6th, I got down on one knee and gave Angie my proposal and she accepted but also told her to get dressed because we need to go shopping. What woman wouldn't want to go shopping for jewelry? As far as I know, it was of some suprise.
Is that the kind of details you wanted?
-
Cool beans... :2thumbsup;
-
Good jobm Sandman!!! :clap;
-
Yes, those are the details we wanted. Now Angie, tell us your version of the story!

Yes, thank you that was much better than Angie's "SUCKY" details. She created a very good couple of posts (over 4 paragraphs) with all the details over on another site (not angieskidney.com) with only 2 people congratulating her ::) , but here on IHD.com with over 50 replies and tons of warm wishes, and I even gave it a "STICKY" we get:
no details yet. Sandman has to get his visa and a new job. We are both poor. The wedding will be very small.
I don't understand that.
:'( ::)

Maybe this could be a way to meet? No better way to get together than for a wedding. Maybe there is a way to do a live webcast if the event? Just a thought.
-
Congratulations Angie & Jeff. Wishing you both many happy years together. :clap;
-
Epo, I think when she said no details yet, she meant no date set, etc.
-
OHH OHH Yeah webcast!!! That would be great! :yahoo;
-
Epo, I think when she said no details yet, she meant no date set, etc.
Well my whole point was that she went into a lot of detail on another site. As I mentioned here:
She created a very good couple of posts (over 4 paragraphs) with all the details over on another site (not angieskidney.com)
I understand what you mean but I don't understand why she post this on our site:
no details yet. Sandman has to get his visa and a new job. We are both poor. The wedding will be very small.
With so many members congratulating her on this site, I think the members deserve a little more than a one-liner.
On another site she posted this long post about how they met and how he proposed and so forth. And like 2 members replied to that thread. Personally I don't care, however I think our members deserve more "details" since so many members took the time to reply to this thread AND asked for details.
But what ever. ::)

For your info, when I typed that I had just got back from dialysis and crashed. I've crashed the last 3 times on dialysis (just ask Jeff) and it has been really hard on me. infact, yesterday at work I was so dizzy I almost decided to just go home.
When I posted on the other site and my own, it was a copy paste. Much easier. Maybe I shoulda done that here too? I thought that is what I did but I will have to check becuase I don't remember.
Anyway, still on vacation and I ONLY posted because you asked me to. I figured I would put more details on Monday after Jeff is back home. I mean, who wants to come to another country to visit a girl who is glued to the computer? I figured that could wait til he goes back home.
I only posted on my forums because it is mine and on the other one because I was asked to post there as well. I have not even posted on Sandman's gaming forum where we met in the first place! You'd think that would be the spot for that right? Anyway, been a very hard week for me and I have been grouchy. I love all the ideas everyone is giving and Jeff is trying to convince me to go for the live cam cast thingy someone mentioned. He is like a little kid at Christmas "ooh we can do that!!" Tee hee hee
Anyway, Epoman don't take it so personally that I haven't posted any great details when I said I wouldn't be posting as much for 2 weeks. I have already posted more than I planned so that should make you happy :p
Thank you everyone for all the happy wishes! It means a lot! :cuddle; :grouphug;
And by the way, the OTHER forums have moved and my post is gone anyway.
edit: I just checked. The first post is the EXACT SAME in all three forums!
(See Below - the attached pics)
Also I haven't posted a lot because I mean I could but if I do I would never get off the computer! As it is I have a wedding to go to tomorrow out of town and have to get to bed. No need to make this into something big when it is not. Don't worry I will post at my usual rate again. You haven't lost me :P
Okay then .. here are details:
Jeff let me choose it so he proposed before the ring but I knew when he asked that is was for real and I said yes. He was so serious. The date is not set but in a few years. There is still so much planning and finances to plan and he still is working on coming over through customes and immagration.
We met .. well it is a long story but the short story might make me sound pathetic :P
The short story is ... we met on the net :p
The long story is ... long ago when I still had my transplant I went out with a guy named Jason. I met Jason in my city through another guy named Bill who was dating a girl named Bonnie who kinda stayed with me and never left. Jason was so busy with his job as a truck driver that when he came home all he did was want to "wind down" by playing online games. Once I lost my transplant I had all this time on my hands so he got me my own computer and I got into online games. Through Jason I met his gaming buddies Steve and Jonny and another guy named Bill who we called WildChild. When I broke up with Jason and started dating Steve I was still playing the same game but Jason stopped playing it. Then When Steve and I broke up I joined a new game with WildChild who introduced me to another game which is where I met Jeff in.
hehe :) So there it is ! :P
So anyway Jeff is here now and he proposed to me after dialysis on Monday night in my room. Did the whole get down on one knee thing and all ;)
Ya but because of financial hardship and my health .. it will be slowly done. A lot of people are under the impression as soon as I say I am engaged that I am jumping right into the planning and that the wedding will be next year. But first Jeff has to work on being allowed to live over in my country and we have to save up money for a wedding but we have already decided it will be very small (just immediate family and maybe a few very close friends - even though I would like to be able to fly his family over here or mine over there .. most likely the wedding will be in Canada though since my family is closer to me and more likely to actually attend).
There is a lot to do but the financial part is the biggy. We both really have nothing saved up for it yet with me having been off work for a year and now only working 4 hrs/wk and him being told that his job will be closing in the next year and he will be trying to find work over here.
Who knows .. maybe people will give "gifts" to my site or something lol .. not counting on it. With me hardly working and him between work and off work from his seasonal job .. it is very hard right now.
-
I'm not taking it personally, I was just concerned for the feelings of my members. That other forum is STILL online. It is just not being used due to the fact they changed forum software yet again. Thank you for giving the "story" I think the members deserved it. Not sure why you posted all three sets of pictures. As I was not referring to your FIRST post as giving details I was talking about the reply you added later with details.
But anyway that doesn't matter, thank you for giving the members of IHD.com what they asked for, that was all I wanted.
And I am sure the some of the members of IHD.com will chip in and we can get you guys a nice Wedding present when the time comes. :grouphug;

Yep, I think we should all meet and go to her wedding! Can you imagine the dialysis centers in her area getting a flood of out of the country visitors all at once! Or else get as close the border of the US and Canada as we can, get passports for a day, go to the wedding in Canada, then come back the the US side for dialysis and visiting. It would take some planning and finagling. I could come as far as Milwaukee, WI. My daughter goes to school in Milwaukee. :2thumbsup;

lol WI is on the other side of the Great Lakes tho :P I've been as far as MN and they have some great hospitals over that way as far as my research revealed to me :P

Okay, where in Canada are you? That way I can plan. Muuhahahahaha!

Where the green square is.. (this is a map from my site when I used to have the Neo map on my site and would tell me how many people were on and from what part of the world and would put a yellow dot and more than one person in the same area would show an even bigger yellow dot! lol Look at the lower right to see just how many people popped into my site back this summer! When I took this screenshot there were 5 people viewing while I was on!)

Windsor, Ontario, Canada. She is so close to Detroit MI that you can see the city of Detroit from her apartment building. ;) :2thumbsup;
-
I have never been to Detroit, the auto manufacturer of the United States. I may just have to go to Milwaukee to see the kid, then off to Detroit, MI. We may have a condo plan in Canada, too. Hmmmm. Lots of people to see now across the states. When hubby travels to see his people I could go along and see all you nice people!
Hey Epoman, how about a site map with us on it?

Why, yes, I have seen that section. Have written in it many times. Oh, you want me to go make my suggestion there???? Okay, why didn't you just say so???
I know, I know, I am always such a smart ass early in the morning hours.

Show up in a big ol' 10-seater "church" van. :lol; We could make it the party van though. :beer1;

You did say it had to be an inexpensive wedding, right? Well, you can't get any cheaper than guests who can't have anything to drink! >:D

That is so true! Just think of the food savings, too. A renal diet wedding menu...Hmmm. What exactly would that consist of???

I just got back from a wedding and was depressed because Jeff had to head back home early. Then I saw all the elaborate things this wedding had and it got me so depressed because it just reminded me of all the things Jeff and I will never be able to afford. Then my cousin said that Jeff and I should not bother with a hall but have a summer time BBQ! I thought hey that would save money! :)
Anyway, I am now back from vacation and will be posting a lot again since Jeff is on his way home hours ago and I just got back from the wedding now. I was sad Jeff didn't get to dance even ONE dance with me .. but what can you do? Unless someone wanted to give Jeff $200 - $300 for the extra day car rental .. there was no way he could stay.
But ya, what other ideas can anyone come up with for a cheap wedding still done in a Church? ANy cheap ideas for the reception? I like the BBQ idea! :)

$200- $300 for an extra day car rental? I can rent a BMW for $59 a day, an average small car I can rent for $29 a day. Why was it so much?
-
Cheap ideas: arrange flowers yourself, as much as you can. Use candles for ambiance in the church if you are allowed. If it's a semi-casual wedding, a cocktail style dress and nice suit are MUCH cheaper than a gown and tux.
-
My wife and I were broke when we were married too. We made all the decorations ourselves, mostly bought from the "Dollar" store. We planned our wedding for the day after Valentines day, as I said, the dollar store was our best friend. We bought 2 hams, and A bunch of Au-gratin potatoes for the main course. Friends brought cookies, but I baked our wedding cake myself. Its your day, you don't need tons of money to make a nice memory..Work together, that will be your best memories of your wedding day, trust me.
-
I can talk about an inexpensive wedding. Mine was just about free, except for paying the preacher. We had a ceremony on the top of Missionary Ridge in Chattanooga, Tennessee. It was just my parents, my sister, the preacher and us. It was beautiful spot on a fall day in November. I remember the beer can in one of the statues hands on the monument. We laughed at it and ignored it. It was beautiful place.We stood in front of the replica civil war cannons. Our decorations were what mother nature had for us and a beautiful view of the city through the trees. I will try to find pictures of it if you all would like to see us!
-
Yes, please post pics. :)
-
Angie, your wedding can be as simple yet as beautiful as YOU make it, as long as love is in the air there is no need for elaboration. Good luck to you both... :beer1;
-
Just remember - it's your wedding and the only thing you HAVE to do is say "I do". All the bells and whistles are not necessary. Hubby and I had about 275 people, and still didn't spend very much. We used resources from family and friends, and did without a lot of fancy things. It was kind of funny - one of hubby's cousins got married 3 weeks before we did, with the giant blowout with a dozen bridesmaids, the huge catered dinner at the massive hall, a live band, and the $5000 dress - but our wedding is the one everyone still talks about as being the best party. We planned it so the guests were our main priority, and made sure everyone had fun.
Joe Paul is right about the dollar store - a very good place for decorations. Don't forget after-Xmas sales for twinkle lights. We skipped the endless little bags of favors - just sprinkled a handful of hershey kisses on the tables and added a bit of curling ribbon draped around the candles (which were already on the restaurant tables).
Make your own invites - you can do amazing things on the computer with vellum and fancy paper. Skip the RSVP's and the small fortune in stamps - do a buffet or BBQ and figure on 80% of the guests showing up.
If you want the big, poufy wedding dress - check consignment and thrift stores. My best friend got hers for $25 and it didn't even need to be altered to fit her. I bought an ivory evening gown for $150 at Penny's.
Skip the cake - or have only a tiny one to cut for pics and serve the guests cupcakes or brownies. You can make them yourself ahead of time and freeze them.
Artificial flowers look just like real ones in the pics. You can make all the bouquets yourself for a fraction of the price of real ones.
DJ's are cheaper than bands. An MP3 cd player is cheaper yet. You can make up a music CD with 150-200 songs on it, and find a friend to press play. I'm sure someone you know has a decent set of speakers you can borrow.
It's supposed to be fun, not expensive!

$200- $300 for an extra day car rental? I can rent a BMW for $59 a day, an average small car I can rent for $29 a day. Why was it so much?
I went through National car rental and picked up one of their last minute specials. Was any mid size SUV for $179 a week, unlimited mileage. I priced it all out to be $475 for the two week trip ( 14 days ) plus had the optional late day for an extra $35. But since the contract was a last minute special, anytime past the contracted due date nullifies the special deal and it goes to full price which would be $290 a week, plus the extra time, also at full price. I know, real p*cking stupid! :urcrazy; I wish they would have told me that in the begining, before I signed the agreement.
Anyway, I brought the car back today and I had just filled it up the night before when I got into town. They ask you to fill the tank on return which I felt was fair enough. So the gas gauge was just a hair below the full line when I returned it and they were going to charge me even more to fill the tank? I brought the car back clean, on time and full of gas and they were going to hit me up for another $100! :banghead; What more do they want? So now it's up to $615 for a rental that was only suppose to be $475. Well, I just exploded and demanded to see the manager at that point.
After a long, heated arguement, the manager cut the bill back down to $470, total cost. Needless to say, I will not be using National ever again.

I love your advice and welcome more!! I love this! Thank you!! I want more advice for a cheap wedding here! MORE MORE MORE!!
Are you sure? How much more? ;D
I've helped plan a lot of frugal festivities - I'm both practical and pretty crafty, so my friends call me a lot for bright ideas for doing things cheaply.
Best to start with a date and location ASAP - around here, churches are booked in the summer sometimes a year in advance. You might want to start thinking about where to hold the BBQ. If you want to reserve an eating area in state park in MI, you need quite a bit of lead time for that as well. Most of the ones around here will cordon off a pavilion for you if you make a reservation soon enough. Better yet is a back yard of a willing relative who has really nice landscaping. Tent rentals are a lot cheaper than halls.
You said on another thread that you were just at a beautiful wedding, and you were feeling depressed that you couldn't afford the same. Don't think about it like that. Pick out the two or three things that you were most impressed with, and budget around them for your own wedding. Don't try to impress the guests with tons of over the top things - you're inviting the people who really care about you, and they won't care if the wedding was pricey or not. Trust me, as long as the food is good, they won't care if it wasn't expensive.
Pick your theme and colors early, and you can start shopping for things to go with them all thru the year at all the sales. Also consider what connections you've got thru family and friends. I had a built in wedding hall - my dad owns a restaurant. One of my friends married a man with his own farm. They planned a fall wedding and planted hundreds of decorative gourds, squash, sunflowers and pumpkins in the spring so all their decorations were free, except for the time spent weeding. Do you or Jeff collect anything that could be used as a theme, so you could cut down on the cost of decorating?
And every time someone close says "Can I help with something?", say "Yes!" and let them!

Angie, The Knot (www.theknot.com) used to have a big message board, and there are all sort of ideas there. Just be warned that a lot of women there are into the over the top, mortage the house type of expensive wedding. But if you can get past that, there are good cheap ideas. The boards are probably there still. Joe and I are looking at throwing a reception type party this coming fall if/when we can get our marriage done in the church - have to get his annulment finished first though. Right now I'm thinking a sort of Mexican/Filipino fiesta type party. Both types of food are pretty cheap to make, plus I think it will be fun, which is the main point of it all.

Even though I come from a very Europeon family I think Jeff and I would most likely have an Italian dinner .. but I really like the BBQ idea my cousin gave me as well. It is true Jeff and I haven't really talked about colours or theme as we are concentrating on one thing at a time first (his Visa).
Thanks for your ideas and I will check out that site! I also think I am gonna start looking in dollar stores with things in mind ;)

I had friends that got married in Ontario..he was born there she was from Arizona US and for whatever problems they had with her visa it was easier for him to move here so now they live in Arizona.

Really? Wow .... but the whole reason for him moving here is that neither of us have any Private Insurance and we have NO money to even help us out before Medicaid would kick in and I am too young to be accepted for Medicare :(

Angie, here you get Medicare before you reach retirement age when you are on dialysis. I don't know how that would be affected by you moving here from Canada though.

It is not based on your age, I got Medicare when I was 21.

ESRD is one of the only exceptions to the 65 yr age requirement. You can check out the details on their website. http://www.medicare.gov/ Good luck you guys! And trust me, you don't need an expensive wedding day to have a wonderful marriage, so don't worry about it.

THis is good to know :) Becuase Jeff is planning on moving here and then we will get health care (either Medicare or Medicaid) but I always thought it was like ODSP here in my city. I thought as long as you qualify you don't pay a damn thing. And meds are covered and there is just a co-pay of $2 per medication.
Where as everyone in my Province gets OHIP and even Jeff would after 6 months which covers all doctor visits for any reason and any hospital stays up to a semi-private room.

It's good to know that I could get free medical services after I lived in Canada for over 6 months. Not really a big selling point for me though because I frequent the doctors offices so rarely. ::)
