Title: Ice Finds
Post by: kitkatz on October 28, 2006, 08:27:34 PM
My sister says I should write a book about the ice I have had, where I found it, and where the best dialysis chewing ice in town can be found.  I love self serve soda machines.  Especially the ones with the good crunchy ice in them.
So far:  AM/PM where you can get your choice of crunchy ice or cubed ice.  I usually make a mixed cup of both kinds of ice.
Gus' JR. restaurants that have crushed ice.  Nice to get a full cup of ice and diet coke from them. Just pour the diet coke off the ice and you have tasty ice.
Walgreen's Drugstore for small ice cubes in the small bags. The big bags have ice that is not good chewing ice. Chunks are too big.
Stater Bros ice in big bags is too big to crunch on without breaking your teeth. You need a hammer to get this stuff into a cup.

My unit has the best ice.  Little  squares.  Just melts in ur mouth.
I don't know why everyone I come across in town thinks Sonic has the best ice.  I think not,  I hate there ice.  YUCK ! ! !
I also like the ice that comes out of my moms fridge.  The ice that comes out of my grams fridge tastes so bad.  It use to be real good.  So I don't know what changed.   :'(

I'll have to check out the ice around here.
I need to get into that iso having a glass of water.
Always craving something ice cold like popsicles.

The only "dishonest" thing I do (that I know of) is when I go to a fast food place I ask for water and they give me a cup.  I go over and get ice and a shot of root beer.  I just want flavored ice but I don't want to pay $1.75 for it.  I feel guilty though.

I love the ice at DaVita.  Little balls of ice that melt when you bite down on them.  They could sell that stuff.  I shouldn't give them any ideas.

You shouldn't feel guilty as a lot of pop gets wasted and a little shot doesn't cost any company any money and the ice is free! We didn't ask for Kidney Disease! I say the next time grab a shot with that in mind! Enjoy the little taste of heaven in our own personal hell we share Rerun!  :beer1; :cuddle;

I bought this indurstial ice crusher.  I don't like it.  It is just little pieces of hard ice.  For some reason I thought it would create little balls of soft ice.  It is going in my next garage sale.

The Brand name is Waring Pro but it sucks!  I just did a search for ice crushers.  The first one I got you had to turn a handle so they let me send it back and then I got this electric one.  It is just not the same as the one at the center because it uses my ice cubes.  The one at the center makes it own little tiny balls and I love it.

not tequila, goofynina, you have to use kahlua for that - especially those ready mix mudslide ones. . .

We used to have a store that sold New Orleans Snowcones and they had something like 50 flavor syrups.  I used to get a mocha kahlua flavored one every day I was working.  It wasn't actually alcoholic, thankfully, but ooooohhh so good.

I bet all those fancy flavorings you can get at the fancy coffee shops would make great snowcones.

I've tried the ice in the last couple days and it tastes so good.
was thinking of sprinkling some crystal light or something on it.
Making tiny little cubes in my tray and that sorts of limits them cause
I have to wait for them to freeze.  When I get out will look for
some crushed ice or cubed ice.  My son/wife do have a snowcone maker
they got I think at Meijers.   Maybe I should ask for one for Christmas.

One of my friends was on a low carb diet and they had all those syrups in sugar free also.  A company called DaVinci makes them and they're pretty good.
davincigourmet.com
but you can find them in retail stores sometimes.

I've been bringing my own plastic cups with lids to dialysis and filling them up with ice and taking them home.  I get the large 20oz plastic clear cups and lids at Dunkin Donuts (ask for some when you go--if they're nice they'll give you a few when you buy a cup of coffee).  I wait until the absolutely last minute before I leave and fill them up and put the lids on.  There really isn't too much meltage on the way home (15 minutes) and when I get home I pour out the water and freeze it.  Every 5 minutes go to the freezer and shake the cup to keep the balls apart.  It comes out perfect!  I LOVE ME ICE!!!  I crave it!  Somedays I'd rather eat and chew ice than food.......I've sprinkled Cyrstal Light over it also--or you can put a tiny bit of water on the bottom of the cup,  put the Crystal Light in it and then fill it with ice then skae it a bit so the ice has all the flavor in it.  I've also gotten some Coke syrup at the pharmacy and put that over ice to get that Coke flavor when I really crave it.  Plus when I was little kid Coke syrup was used to make your stomach feel better, my mom put it over ice and it stopped neasua (SP)

Those are really good ideas.
I have not noticed an ice machine at the center I go to.
Maybe I just missed it.
I'm having a friend pick me up a 2-liter diet ginger ale and I'm going to
see how that works for smal ice cubes also.  I found I've drank lot less
fluid last couple days using small ice.  Thanks for all the good ideas.

Crstal Light has some Phosphorus in it. Not sure how much but I remember I was gonna buy some until I saw that. Not as much as milk but since I have the hardest time with fluids I try to stick with non-Po4 drinks :P

When I was a kid, we always had something in the pantry called "U-Bet" syrup...it came in chocolate, vanilla, and fruit flavors. We used it with seltzer to make eggcreams and flavored soda. Also great on ice cream.
Enjoy your "brainfreeze!!"

Goofynina, when you blended the ice, did you use tap water to make the ice (I hate the taste of my own tap water) or use bottled water? Did the blender have an "Ice" feature (a lot of them are advertising that feature now) or did you just blend normal (what setting??).

They have the best ice at my dialysis unit. It's shaped like little tubes and it's almost like crushed ice formed into shapes, so it's not really hard.

When I bought a new refrigerator, I chose not to buy one with an icemaker. I wanted an icemaker, but didn't want to crawl under the house to install the plumbing. I saw that Home Depot had a Magic Chef brand countertop unit that required no plumbing. It makes a lot of ice, and makes the tube type cubes, in three sizes. I love it! :thumbup;

I sometimes bag it in 2 gallon ziplock freezer bags, so if I go somewhere, and want to fill an ice chest. I have several bags in the freezer.

Sandman bought me a blender that has the "ice crushing" button (just a speed setting really) but I find that the ice is so hard. Not soft like the ice in dialysis :( Any suggestions??

i think the difference in hard and soft ice is how many minerals are in the water-I have a well and my well ice is cloudy and soft-but if i use bottled water it is clear and very hard.

I was thinking of using bottled water. Figured it wouldn't be as hard as my tap water. But now that you said that I am wondering ... so bottled water is hard water?? :( What about if I bought one of those tap filters??

How can I get softer water without access to the building's water heater??

The ice from my countertop icemaker is clear and somewhat hard when it is first frozen. The ice falls in a wire basket. It isn't refridgerated, it's insulated like an ice chest, so as it melts, the water is recycled and makes new ice. The old ice becomes cloudy and is soft. Perfect to crunch on!

I was thinking of using bottled water. Figured it wouldn't be as hard as my tap water. But now that you said that I am wondering ... so bottled water is hard water??  What about if I bought one of those tap filters??

How can I get softer water without access to the building's water heater??

I think you have it backwards--the water that comes out of my well- its 'hard' water--even though its what makes the softer ice-its full of minerals, its actually sulfur water if you know what that is, you can actually smell the iron and sulfur..

water that goes through our filtration system is treated with chlorine, run through charcol-then goes through an osmosis filter to become 'soft' water which makes the hardest ice.

I have well water that is horrible.
It is black sulphur.  Smells bad, tastes bad.
Always buy water.  Have had to replace copper plumbing with plastic.
I replace things often that water goes thru.  It is terrible!
Has broken down water equiopment, softeners, chlorinators, etc.
I'd like to have a portable ice maker as I don't use one from fridge
because of the lousy water.

My latest addiction - half frozen ice cubes from my freezer.  I like them when the air bubble is still moving in the unfrozen water inside the cube, but there's enough ice on the outside to hold it all together until I bite down.  Then there is a wonderful gush of icy water around all the shards on my tongue.

Ahhh, I'm so tired of being denied the simplest things.

Well all I know is my water is hard and tastes like shit :( and when we made ice using my new blender it was hard to chew and nothing like the ice at my dialysis center. I live in a city of 200,000 people so water here comes from the Detriot River which is very poluted and goes through a water treatment plant and then into our pipes.

Me too! Especially when summer times comes here!!
