Hi Guys! I am wondering what any of you all did/do when your arterial will not stop bleeding? I have been having some problems where I sit for over an hour after dialysis and I am still bleeding! I had that happen on Monday, and well I kinda started crying and just generally got frustrated with it. So what my question is is how do you guys take care of this? I mean do you think I need a fistulagram? and what does that entail?? I have been using betadine and that seems to do the trick after I try using just the clamps and the gauze.

Thanks! :)

I'd cry too
I have a fistula and have never had much of a problem with bleeding unless I do not hold long enough before taping
do you hold your own sites
I find that it is better to hold than use the clamps
hope U are better
I know you married Phelps but have you had a good look at some of those divers

I use clamps now and wait at least 10 minutes. I never have a problem. If you do,you might want to reduce the two hour heparin.

when  this  occurs  rarely i  use  CALDISTAT,  its similar  to  gauze  and  can  guarantee  to  stop  the  bleeding.

as  flip  suggested  look  into  the  heparin

fistulagram  is  a  last  resort  i've  had  4  hurt  like hell  especially  when  they  balloon.

Have they checked your pressures?  The nurses should be able to do that on the machine while you are hooked up.  Every time I've had bleeding problems like that, it was because my graft was narrowing.

Thanks everyone. I forgot to mention that one of the techs left a note saying that i would like to have my heparin reduced as well, hopefully that will solve it. What is cadistat(sp) never used that. I will maybe try holding the arterial site tomorrow and just use clamp on the venous site. THANKS

not  sure  if  caldistat  has  a  different  name  in  the  u.s,  its  a  type  of  gauze  that  causes  you  to  clot off  faster  than  usual,

clamps  are  a  last  resort,  they  will  stuff  your  fistula  alot faster   than  holding  your  sites

Yeah it would be too much heparin.. so definitely get that lowered.

I have been so lucky with that... I usually stop within 2 minutes and have only bled later once which was not fun.. luckily I was on the scales at the time and someone noticed a trail of blood and started yelling at me! LOL

Good luck Karen!!

i had a problem when i was in oregon, the first day i was there it took 45 minutes to stop bleeding. when i got home my neph sent me for a fistula gram to see if there was a narrowing in the fistula (apparently that causes problems clotting) yep that was it, all is fine now. talk to your doctor.
