has anyone heard of people who have been on dialysis for extended periods 1-2 years and then got kidney function back and not due to a transplant?
if so how did it occur and what caused kidney failure to begin with?????

I've seen it happen in cases where the kidney damage was caused by an accident or a drug reaction. I know there are cases out there where people with CKD have actually gone off dialysis, but they are few and far between. There is always hope and don't underestimate the power of prayer.

I have asked few doctors - the answer is   " KIDNEY FAILURE IS A ONE TICKET JOURNEY "  - no returned, but PRAY hard to GOD, hope the MIGHTY ONCE reversed it.  :bow;

Some of my nurses have heard of it happen.. but VERY rare.

Last year we had a person in our unit and they thought her kidney function was returning... her tests were amazing and they even gave her a session off thinking things were looking up... unfortunately they weren't :(

We all got excited for her that's for sure!

I've heard of "acute" kidney failure following an accident or sudden trauma and functioning returning from that but I don't think it goes on for as long as a year or two.  The distinction between acute and chronic is that acute can recover, chronic is a downhill process and transplant is the only way to recover function without dialysis.

Pyelonephritis (began at 8 mos old)
Home haemo 1980-1985 (self-cannulated with 15 gauge sharps)
Cadaveric transplant 1985
New upper-arm fistula April 2008
Uldall-Cook catheter inserted May 2008
Haemo-dialysis, self care unit June 2008
(2 1/2 hours X 5 weekly)
Self-cannulated, 15 gauge blunts, buttonholes.
Living donor transplant (sister-in law Kathy) Feb. 2009
First failed kidney transplant removed Apr.  2009
Second trx doing great so far...all lab values in normal ranges

At our unit in the UK we had an elderly patient who had been on dialysis for some time and was told that his function had come back so he didn't require dialysis - unfortunately for him after a few months he was back in the unit receiving treatment which leads me to believe he was given wrong advice by someone. :Kit n Stik;

Monrein is exactly correct. Acute can be reversed, Chronic can not.
