Marvin and I went back today (Fri) for two check-ups at Duke. I've been packing that open wound on his abdomen for about six weeks. This past week, I was having a hard time getting the packing in because it was closing up. The surgeon took one look at it and said to me, "You're good at this. Stop trying to squeeze the packing in there -- the cavity's filled and you have nothing left to pack!" He then put a gauze or two over it and a little bit of tape (in case it still has some drainage). Marvin was so happy (he hates the packing part -- and I'm not particularly fond of it either). The surgeon was really surprised that it had healed so quickly, but he did take a q-tip and push, push, push all around in the wound (or what's left of it) to make sure it had healed from the bottom up. Marvin then asked his surgeon for a favor -- "Please," Marvin said, "email my nephrologist and tell him I can go back on the active waiting list." (Marvin's neph at Duke is also the head of the transplant division. They moved Marvin to "inactive" waiting status on December 3 because of the infection -- MRSA -- and while his time continued to accrue, he wasn't considered for any kidneys that came available since December.) The surgeon said, "Stay right here." In less than 5 minutes, he was back in the examining room with Marvin's neph. The surgeon told the neph that Marvin's wound had healed beautifully and, as far as he could tell, Marvin was infection-free. Then, the neph said he would move Marvin back to "active status" THIS AFTERNOON !!! We also went to see the Infectious Disease doctor -- and he "cut Marvin loose," too. He said he thought Marvin was doing great and we don't have to go back to see him. Today was a very, very good day -- and one that we've waited for for three months now!

Petey, this is such great news! So glad to hear that you're both doing your parts so well (Marvin healing, and you taking care of him).

KT -- so good to see a post from you. I saw on the news where the tornadoes came through Atlanta last night (Fri), and I was worried about you.
