This is a perennial problem for lots of us. But I find that your 50 oz allowance is not bad at all. I have been having problems restricting my fluids for my 2 ˝ years on haemodialysis. But I do know that it is very necessary to continue to try to restrict them. The end result of too much overload is not pleasant!! One of the things that is good for me is chewing gum. It keeps me from drinking and recyles the fluid in my body. You can also try freezing grapes. They can quench your thirst. Ice chips work fine as well. I hope others will join this thread and give you some advice.

Self denial? That seems to be what the docs expect. Gum, hard candy, eat fruit instead of drinking water when you are thirsty. Watch the salt. Measure how much fluid all your glasses hold, and get rid of the big ones. Only pour yourself drinks in tiny glasses. Don't pour yourself a glass with the meal - try eating the whole meal without a glass in front of you. Don't order anything to drink when you go out to eat - the glasses are always too large in a restaurant, and it's too hard to keep from drinking it all. Run a humidifier if the air in your house is dry. I do pretty well most days - sometimes not so much!

Ice chips -- this is what has worked to quench (somewhat) Marvin's thirst all these years now. Before ESRD, he always had a soft drink or a glass of tea in his hand. It was a difficult adjustment for him to make, but he's so good at watching the fluids now.

I think she was shouting! I would be if I could only have 50 oz. I haven't been placed on fluid restriction, but when I do it's going to be painful! Good Luck!!!

i basically live on ice blocks but some how still manage to put on at 3 litres between treatments. try as hard as you can to minimise your fluid intake,if you continually overload, after time you'll notice that you will contract cardiovasascular issues. it ain't easy but try

Very tough issue, this is one reason I like home dialysis since I do it more often, there is less of a restriction. Ice is my fav too, and I haven't finished a whole glass of anything in a long time. Worry once I get a transplant I will forget to drink!!

When Marvin had his transplant, it was drink, drink, drink all the time. They told him to push the fluids then. He would say, "I can't drink that much!"

50 ounces? What's that around 1500ml a day? I WANT YOUR LIFE!! lol
I make do with about 800-1000ml a day. I think that's 30-35 ounces. I try to keep under 2kg change between sessions (weekends are horrid sometimes!)
I measure very carefully what I take in (or at least keep a rough guestimate) as well as obsess over the home scales to make sure I'm doing OK. I also hang out in the sauna once or twice a week which helps to sweat out another 500-600ml if I feel that need.
I think of it ias "no pain, no gain" sort of thing. When I see guys come in 7kg over (!) between sessions they may have enjoyed their drinkies, but they're screwing with their LIVES (heart/lungs) doing that...
I know WHEN my transplant time arrives I will drink back everything I'm missing out on now.. and then some...
but right now I'd love a nice hot cup of tea.... alas... no can do!

please help HOW DO YOU STAY ON YOUR CORRECT AMOUNT OF FLUIDS
We find that awareness is very important. We have a one liter bottle that we fill after dialysis. Each time Rolando gets a drink, the same amount comes out of the bottle. (2 bottles/interval weekdays, 3 bottles/interval weekends, averaging 1 liter a day). Without this, we find that we underestimate (sometimes by quite a bit) his fluid intake. This, coupled with a couple of breathless nights after a hard drinking weekend helps keep us on track. Alene

it has been suggested to me to eat popsicles but I find that I am thirstier after eating one
I wish they had a plain water popsicle on a stick that was the same consistency as a popsicle and just as easy to eat
it is not ice because it could be eaten like a popsicle and no after taste

I drink iced tea and it works as kind of a natural diuretic or me. I seldom gain between treatments and, when I do, it's usually less than 0.5 kilo.

Sugar, salt and caffeine can trigger thirst.
Best thing to do is start exercising IMO.
It helps eliminate excess fluid and salt through sweating and also helps eliminate some toxins. Side benefit it helps with the washed out feeling and gives one more energy.
IMO it is this excess of toxins that also contributes to excessive thirst in the dialysis population.

IMO, this is the best advice. Salt, sugar makes you thirsty along with high creatine and urea levels and exercise is always a good thing.

I try to stick to my 40 oz. limit but sometimes exceed it. It's not unusual or me to actually gain a little bit while I'm dialyzing. My session starts about 11:30 so I usually take lunch in with me so that's probably the reason.

If you are doing 5 hr. sessions, you probably have little or no urine output. I feel very fortunate to still be peeing. I feel so much better when no weight comes off.
