I had a friend from church call me today and say that she and her husband both want to be tested to see if they could donate to me. Although I have already had 6 people try without a match, I still get a little hopeful that this may be the one... I have a high antibody count (PRA???) of 98%. There are several of you on the board who are much more familiar with the lingo than me. Anyway, just wanted to share the news and maybe have some of you pray that it might work out. Thanks.

Congratulations! I'm always (not that it happens everyday) so touched when someone who is not in my immediate family offers to donate. I also am sensitized (80% or so) so none of mine have panned out yet, either. Fingers crossed one of these folks is a match!!!

Hey Traci, This transplant stuff can be a real roller coaster, so hang in there. Thank God there are some really amazing donors in the world! I am sorry if you've already covered this, but doesn't your transplant team offer plasmapheresis to lower your PRA? Good luck!

Karol, I believe I did talk to them about it and they said they either don't do it or would consider it if they had a close enough match that my body wouldn't fight it. Does that make any sense to you?

Traci, find out more information from your transplant co-ordinator about the PRA situation. If they don't have any protocols to help lower the PRA, start doing research on transplant centers in a 3 hour radius of your home. My first center doesn't do it and I had to make calls myself to find a center who will. If you have a good match, they will still need to lower your PRA for you body to accept the new kidney and not reject it. Jill D. and Vandie have had procedures to lower their PRA's. Jill had a living donor with plasmapheresis and Vandie had IVIG therapy and received a cadaver kidney. I am trying to get accepted in a new program at my first center with IVIG therapy. I have learned to ask question and then more questions and then find out the answers for myself. Thank goodness for the internet and for IHD!! I'll keep saying prayers for a match for you.

Good luck, traci! It always feels so humbling when someone offers to get tested. It amazed me how generous people are.
I also was highly sensitized (93%), but was able to get 6 out of 6 from the list. Before you get completely discouraged, ask your coordinator about your antigen profile. I got two calls within a month of each other, and got the kidney the second time. I asked about that, since with such a high PRA, I wouldn't have expected two calls so close together. Apparently some antigen profiles are more common than others, and that can make your wait much shorter than you might expect, if you have a common one. Just something to keep in mind. Best of luck to you!!

We go in tomorrow to give our blood. As my friend put it to her son, let's hope our blood "plays nice together"! Thanks for your support. We had a really great prayer night about it at church. Just to pray about it felt good. What ever - it is in God's hands and His timing of it all.

Well we got the call finally today and she is not a match. Apparently I fight too much with everyone! And I am such a mellow person!!! Anyway, I did ask her abot the plasmaphoresis and they did start doing that at this hospital about a year ago. She will review my file to see if any of the other potential donors would be an option for that. They only do it if they can find that I have like two or three of the antibodies already that don't fight. Will keep you posted...
