Gift of life for anti-freeze victim

The Press Association

A man left blind and deaf after his wife poisoned him with anti-freeze could receive a new kidney from his younger brother, it has been reported.

Lee Knight, 37, was also left with brain damage and kidney failure after 28-year-old Kate Knight laced his food with ethylene glycol on their seventh wedding anniversary.

Mr Knight could now get the transplant he needs after tests showed that his brother Michael's organ was a match, The Sun said.

The former JCB worker told the newspaper how his 29-year-old brother casually offered him his kidney "as if he was offering me a drink".

"To think my kid brother is willing to donate part of his body to keep me alive is very humbling," he said.

"I will never see his face again but I remember his smile and know he's happy to give me a chance."

A jury at Stafford Crown Court took eight hours to convict Kate Knight, of Meir Hay, Stoke-on-Trent, of attempted murder following a three-week trial which heard that she stood to gain £130,000 from her husband's death.

She had hoped to pay off mounting debts by netting his death benefit from JCB, but Mr Knight managed to survive despite spending 16 weeks in a coma after being admitted to hospital in April 2005.

Knight will be sentenced later this month.
