Hi All,

My hubby is on home dialysis 6 days a week. What I am wondering about is that his protein is routinely low. We don't eat red meat and haven't in 35 yrs. His doc recommended he eat a protein bar because they contain 20 grms of protein. However, they are mostly made from nuts and I thought nuts were a no no.

Does anyone have any input on this? Thanks...

My protien was low alot also.. I was told to drink Carnation Instant Breakfast. I did, it helped, my other numbers remained the same b/c I was on PD, otherwise my potassium/phosphorus may have went up. Since your husband is on home dialysis 6 days a week, I'm sure the protien bar will help his protien but not really effect his other numbers, if they did you could always cut down on some other things or whatever. Good luck.  :cuddle;

here's a good thread

http://ihatedialysis.com/forum/index.php?topic=4820.0

you just have to read the nutrition guide on the bars some are acceptable, some are not- I stick to the ones with no more then 180 potassium, and less then 250 phos., he takes 4 renegels with that too. Some of the drinks are okay too if he can spare the fluid- my honey also eats alot of eggs.

I'm a little slow here, but wanted to add that I eat protein bars occasionally with no problems. I do make sure to take a binder with them, though. I stay clear of the ones that are mostly nuts, peanut butter or chocolate, but there are a few that are ok. Also, check the label of the chocolate chip ones, my dietitian says that "chocolate liquor", which is a cheap form of chocolate, is much lower in phos than regular stuff and is ok for us.

If he is on dialysis 6 times a week, then he doesn't have to be as concerned about the usual dietary restrictions.  Having low protein is a concern and should be taken seriously.  He should be making an effort to eat high protein foods at every meal.
