Baltimore toddler gets new kidney, part of father's liver

17-month-old boy remains in intensive care after undergoing procedure in Pittsburgh

PITTSBURGH

A 17-month-old Baltimore boy is recovering in a Pittsburgh hospital after receiving part of his father's liver and his grandmother's kidney, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported today.

Andrew Morrissey was born with a congenital defect that damaged his liver and required both of his kidneys to be removed by the time he was a month old.

But the child's surgeon tells the Pittsburgh newspaper that the 14 hours of surgery on Wednesday went well, though all three patients remained in intensive care today.

A quarter of 29-year-old Michael Morrissey's liver was removed at UPMC Montefiore hospital and transplanted into his son at Children's Hospital. The boy's grandmother, 53-year-old Dee Papania, donated one of her kidneys.
