its a decision that each person can make for themselves. all things being relative, no one can judge or know the level of another's suffering, really.
people will always have an opinion, one way or the other. and judgement is a luxury of fools.

Rob showing off his pot of gold!

someone used the phrase  'compassionate conclusion' to signal the humane ending of an animals life- I think we deserve the same end if we are suffering

I truly believe this also.  But only if we are at the point where the suffering is just too hard to deal with

And w need to remember that this level of suffering that is too hard to deal with, is different for everyone. That point for some may be the first day of dialysis, or the remark of the doctor saying it is now time to start dialysis... and to others it may be 20 years on dialysis... everyone is different.

When I said that deliberately ending dialysis is suicide, I did not mean to imply any criticism of that option!  Far from it!  Many cultures, such as Ancient Greece and Rome, as well as modern Japan, have found suicide in the right circumstances to be an honorable choice.  I agree with that view.  To commit suicide when your life is bringing you more misery than value represents the triumph of courage, rationality, and common sense over the blind, stupid, animal instinct to continue living no matter how meaningless life becomes.

it's very simple. it is a choice you have a right to make. it is not a choice i would make, but then i wasn't put on this earth to make choices for or judge others. not my place. know however that those of us here would miss you, it's just our way. we all feel very strongly about those who have left.

Going through life tied to a chair!

« Reply #32 on: July 01, 2007, 09:35:05 PM »

I didn't read everyone's response, so pardon me if I'm redundant.

Your feelings are totally valid.  I feel the same way.  I had my transplant for 17 years and for 17 years I vowed that I would NOT EVER go back on dialysis.  When I found out that my kidney was failing I went and spent $2,000 on a Living trust so the doctors wouldn't get my house.

Then it was taking so damn long..... for it to fail.  So I decided to try dialysis until my kidney failed and then I'd quit so it would be quick.  But, I haven't done it yet.

I will not become a human walking fistula, and have all my limbs chopped off until all that is left is my ass hole.  I can't believe how people hang on to life with dialysis.  Unbelievable!!!

Once again I want to thank everybody for there responses. For the most part everyone feels the same. For the people that think that stopping dialysis is a crime i.e. suicide talk to me when you have been on dialysis 21 years then let me know what you think.  In the end everybody is diffrent, and everybody is going to have diffrent opinions such is life but I think we can all agrree on somthing on this site

well, i don't hate dialysis, really.
i do hate having kidney disease, though. ;)
the quality of life may be diminished because of being on dialysis,
but, to some of us, life is precious and the possibility
of a good day is enough to keep us going.
its easy when we're relatively healthy, to say what we
would do or not do if we were to get sick...
but when the time comes,
most people choose to live in whatever
condition they can manage.

"Still crazy after all these years."

Being one who has been on hemodialysis continuously for over 20 years, I can truly say it ain't easy.

But it takes too much energy for me to hate dialysis.  I'd rather spend what limited energy I have on doing something for myself --that makes me feel good about my life.

well, so far, this is something i've struggled with and continue to struggle with. what do you do, Zach, to enjoy the life you have?
i used to teach tai chi and play drums. between the two, i made a fairly decent living and managed to survive while doing what i loved the most.
but now, without the energy to teach or play, i find myself against a brick wall, when it comes to finding something to do to feel good about staying alive.
i feel more like a burden than anything else.

It took a few years, but I started my own company to produce public television documentaries.  I raise all the funding (with lots of rejections), hire a camera crew, hire an editor and sit back after all the work is done and enjoy the finished documentary on PBS.
