Rude people

I just wanted to share. I was waiting in the dialysis lobby and this elderly man was talking to an elderly woman. He says " i dont mean to be prejudice ( lol something people say before an insult) but I feel its very unfair for people who come from other countries  come here and just get welfare and medicaid. They don't deserve it. Let me note this was not said to me it was something i overheard well everyone overheard. This really got me thinking the whole time during treatment like I felt awful because why is someone else's life not important? Many poor countries do not have the medical advancements so why is it bad they want to save their lives?! Let me also note before that discussion he was saying "im going to stop dialysis this isn't for me, its not the needles it just wastes my whole day. Doctors just say you're going to die just to scare me.
Our job on this earth is to help one another why be so selfish?

Even age isn't an excuse for that type of rude.  I will say though I did stoop to resent a prisoner in our center on dialysis with 2 deputies taking the chairs normally used by spouses and loved ones accompanying patients.  He was in jail for domestic abuse and his girl friend came in to bring him something which upset the deputies because they thought the centers employees should not have let her in.  Our best dialysis tech told the deputy she was not a baby sitter and that's what he was there for.

Wow are you serious?! Like his gf isnt supposed to be there in the first place. Youre right no matter the age rudeness is unacceptable. Like even if i wanted to I cant ever be mean ti anyone my heart always feels bad even for the wrong person!
I also had a prisoner at my clinic he was in the jail uniform for like 3 trestments then afterwards he was a free man lol. Never saw him after last month. The first time I saw a prisoner lol i was scared. Yeah hes in handcuffs but its was just scary.

Many poor countries do not have the medical advancments

Even the poor countries have dialysis.  The difference is that here everyone gets treated; in many poor countries it's "cash in advance or no needle for you".

On an individual basis, you are correct about compassion.    People do, however, have the right to express frustration that they pay taxes and follow the law all their life and see others rewarded for breaking the law and then expecting, and getting, free stuff - food, housing, medical care, etc.   This frustration grows as one gets older and finds themselves struggling to make the 20% medicare copay; pay for health insurance; choose between taking a full Rx dose and skipping some doses to leave money to buy food; etc.  I am fortunate as I do not have to make that kind of decision - but many on dialysis face that sort of choice every day.

Few illegal immigrants come to the US to get dialysis; it's more common that their crime significantly precedes the need for publicly funded dialysis.

You want to see compassion?   Watch when a foreign legal tourist shows up at a dialysis clinic - without certified funds, there will be no treatment.

Depends if a restraining order is in effect.  If yes, she should not be there - even if both parties consent.

The reality iis that while they pay taxes for Medicare/Medicaid  immigrants are not given any coverage disputes paying taxes.  So immigrants pay but dont receive benefits.

This is only true for ILLEGAL immigrants.    A keyword so often left out of the debate.

But, despite lack of medicare/medicaid, they do get free life critical medical treatment.

This post was edited and changed by someone other than me.  The purple highlight is my comment.  As posted below legal immigrants are barred from getting benefits for 5 years.  The big problem is for 5 years they pay the taxes and would not be covered if they became disabled.

I am the rude person.  I use to wonder why they dialyzed people who didn't even know where they were and yelled "help, help, I want to go home" for 4 hours.  OMG what a miserable existence. 

I think Illegals should be dialyzed until they are deported. 

It comes down to the 10 people in the boat and it is sinking.  (just saw Dunkirk)

I over heard someone cursing out her son or hubby for their dialysis catheter not working.  Seems they had better things to do that day than deal with them and their problems.  He was already upset over it and was actually in tears as she was talking.

Actually immigrants need a five year residency to qualify for Medicare, this means they pay taxes for five years but get no benefits for those five years.

Thank you AaishaDar for your kind explanation. The reason why I asked about your name is because since my childhood I have collected all sorts of fairy tales from many different countries and I especially love Arabic fairy tales i.e. "One Thousand and One nights", "Aladdin and the Wonderful Lamp" and to read the Oxford University translation of the thoughts of Persian mathematician and poet Omar Khayyam is always a very special treat.
... About the conversation you overheard at your dialysis center: I do hope you won't take it too seriously. You know, in "my" dialysis center there are some people who sometimes use "unprintable" language and I chose not to listen, because they are definitely not well at all and I am pretty sure they would use better language if they would feel a little better...
... The dialysis-patient you overheard must have been going through a bad day and hopefully he feels a bit better soon.

You're absolutely right. At this day and age you just gotta ignore what people say mostly because they are angry inside due to their health. We cant change everyone but its our duty to do our part and help others in need of a hand.

My 82 year old mother is still convinced ALL immigrants get $5000 a month, cash, from the federal government, on top of welfare, food stamps, and medicare. She can't say where she heard it from, BUT IT'S TRUE!!

It is not that simple.

Would you deport an immigrant if he was poor and came from a country where the policy is no cash/no dialysis 4u?    If that immigrant was legal, would you non-renew his visa because of the dialysys?   And if the immigrant was a criminal who committed no crime other than violation of immigration law, would you deport him to certain death?

There is no avoiding the fact that deporting a dialysis patient can in many cases be a certain death sentence.
