I asked my doctor about drinking tea, he said it was okay as long as I only have one or two glasses a day. He said water is best, but I get so tired of drinking water all the time!

I'm a tea drinker, I buy the bottles, then fill up the bottles with water about 3-4 times before dumping them.
Right now I have 3 bottles on my desk, guess I'd better dump two!  I gotta have caffeine somehow, I figure
tea is about the only way, since we are not allowed colas!

The nutritionist at my clinic says regular tea is OK, but to watch out on some of the herbal teas as some of the ingredients may be harmful. Some of those exotic teas can also include phosphorus. So regular teas are OK, but check the ingredients on other teas. I like that cold-brewed Lipton tea too--it's mild and can be fixed in just a few seconds, and it doesn't melt the ice. :)

I wonder if anyone has ever found a dark carbonated soda that doesn't contain phosphoric acid. My problem is Pepsi cola, which I can't have. I don't understand why someone can't come up with an approximation of that which doesn't contain the phosphorus. It seems there would be a market for it with as many kidney patients as there are in this country.

Rootbeer has no phosphorus.   :2thumbsup;

Coke and Pepsi use phosphoric acid to reduce the acidity of their products, and keep them safe for consumption.  It's the cheapest acid to do this.  My guess is the other acids they could use impact the taste though, because there has been a lot made of phosphorus and osteoporosis lately and I'm sure they'd offer a substitute if the other acids worked.

my dietician said no green tea.  Also mentioned that bottled teas are not good, check ingredients.  Brewed tea is best.

I've been drinking cranberry juice, as well as tea and water. It was included as being safe to drink in the information paper I received. It adds another flavour to what I eat and drink so I appreciate that.

I live on homemade unsweet ice tea!!! If I don't have it for a day or two I swell up like a fricking balloon!! I already take bumex everyday. But, the mild diuretic effects of the tea really help. Of course, th caffeine is great too. I only drink tea or water. Practically no soda.  A women I recently met in town had a kidney transplant 12 years ago and we were talking about how much tea makes a difference for us. She gains weight too if she stops drinking it. 3-5 lbs in a day for both of us. I don't drink any herbal teas unless I have researched them. Some of the herbs in them can be harmful. So, I usually stick to good ole' black tea. Lipton is the best!!! LOVE IT!!

I also drink Lipton ice tea.. and since I forgot to buy my Diet Dr Pepper... I have been downing my tea like it's nothing, which is GREAT because I am getting my fluids, but also, it is quenching my thirst much better and I have been losing some weight (Probably water weight). I think I am going to keep my Diet Dr Pepper to a minimum now and focus on just drinking my ice cold water and iced tea.  :thumbup;

That is so interesting to read your post. Prior to my transplant, I was like you...I drank my brewed unsweetened tea all day, almost a gallon a day! I was never on fluid restriction even on dialysis since I was still making urine, but I could never figure out how I could drink so much tea! (I often thought maybe it was the tea that kept me "healthy" for so long!) Since my transplant I rarely drink tea, but I drink 3 - 4 liters of water. I know if I start up again I will be guzzling again...not a bad thing, but my teeth have been much whiter lately! By the way, I found that using loose Jasmine tea leaves is an extreme diuretic....I mean, it will clean you right out!

When I was diagnosed with PKD in 1997, my neph at the time said my blood pressure would be an indicator of how my kidneys were functioning, so I went on meds and quit caffeine cold turkey (I was a serious iced tea drinker.) Now I'm without kidneys, my blood pressure is normal, but I haven't had any caffeine because I figure the buzz I'm going to get will be staggering!

I was told root beer was OK...I know Barq's is the only one with caffeine, but I thought they were all phosphorus free.

Cranberry juice is a pain...to get all the benefits, you have to get all the sugars...if you do lite cranberry juice, you don't get all the other benefits. I have been enjoying a cranberry/pomegranite blend though...a nice change from water. And Lite Lemonade is available now in some fast food joints, so that's a decent option.
