I am the caregiver of a person on dialysis.  My husband has a really rare genetic disease which caused his kidneys to fail.  He has been on dialysis since Oct 10, 2014.  He is planning to do peritoneal dialysis when the site heals.  The original site would have already been ready to use if the Dr hadn't screwed up and made a hole in the tube, make it unusable.  So frustrating.  He is so weak and worn out all the time.  Last night he passed out after dialysis and scared me so.  I hope that it gets easier with time.  Any support or advice would be helpful.  I am also looking for ways to add protein in his diet.   :banghead;

Hi welcome.
I personally eat protein bars before and after dialysis.  Been doing good for me but I've also been doing this for almost 2 months only,  still a baby.  Lol.

Welcome to the site kkoehn. Creamcheese and creamcrackers is low phosphate, and potassium, easy to eat, and add protein.

Liquicel is a great way to get protien and unlike protien bars, does not carry a heavy caloric load.

Welcome, kkoehn! Sorry you're having to go through this but it will get better. Fortunately my husband hasn't passed out but if his blood pressure gets too low he feels like he will. It can be scary. We do home-hemo and if his BP gets too low, then I give him a saline bolus and we either end his treatment early or we slow down or lower the amount of fluid to be removed from him. But if it gets too low, I get him off the machine as fast as I can and not chance things. As for protein, my husband likes to eat protein bars (we get the kind with 18-20 grams protein in them from Walmart) and he likes any kind of beef and scrambled eggs. Good luck! Please keep us posted as to how things go.

Meant to add that if my husband is close to his "dry weight", that is usually when his blood pressure starts to get a little too low during treatment. Sometimes he hardly has any fluid to be removed but he will do what they call "challenge" his dry weight, except that is not always a good idea for him because it makes his BP drop and then we have to give him some saline and end his treatment. Hopefully your husband will do better on PD.

Husband had ESRD with Type I Diabetes -Insulin Dependent.
I was his care-partner for home hemodialysis using Nxstage December 2013-July 2016.
He went back to doing in-center July 2016.
After more than 150 days of being hospitalized with complications from Diabetes, my beloved husband's heart stopped and he passed away 06-08-21. He was only 63.

I am a caregiver to my wonderful husband,  He is 4p and started PD October 2013. We have several living donors waiting to be tested for a transplant. Dialysis is a bridge to get us where we need to go. 
He had a transplant in November 2019.
