Hi so I'm 31 all my friends like to drink now and then and I generally don't because I have to drink too much. Lol. I was wondering if anyone else drinks don't seem to have the full effect on them either pre D or during.  I always chalked it up to  the kidneys. I'm not a big drinker just curious...

Ps I drink once every few months, only 1 to 3, and only once since I started dialysis last month.

I didn't drink pre-D (too young  :angel;  ) and always drink liquors as low volume, high alco %

Uninterrupted in-center (self-care) hemodialysis since 1982 -- 34 YEARS on March 3, 2016 !!

No transplant.  Not yet, anyway.  Only decided to be listed on 11/9/06. Inactive at the moment.  ;)
I make films.

Just the facts: 70.0 kgs. (about 154 lbs.)
Treatment: Tue-Thur-Sat   5.5 hours, 2x/wk, 6 hours, 1x/wk
Dialysate flow (Qd)=600;  Blood pump speed(Qb)=315
Fresenius Optiflux-180 filter--without reuse
Fresenius 2008T dialysis machine
My KDOQI Nutrition (+/ -):  2,450 Calories, 84 grams Protein/day.

Husband had ESRD with Type I Diabetes -Insulin Dependent.
I was his care-partner for home hemodialysis using Nxstage December 2013-July 2016.
He went back to doing in-center July 2016.
After more than 150 days of being hospitalized with complications from Diabetes, my beloved husband's heart stopped and he passed away 06-08-21. He was only 63.

Last drink I had was a beer in 2010.  Wife says alcohol screws with my prescriptions.  Still have the rest of the six-pack. Wife beats me too.  No nurse will ever say "Yes" to having a drink, unless she is trying to seduce you.  If you wait for that you'll dry up and croak first.

I drank before D and I still enjoy a cold beer.  As for phosphorous, I take a Renvela every 2 beers.  Life goes on!  :bandance;

It's part of trying to lead a normal life because a lot of social activities revolve round "putting the kettle on" "meeting in the pub" or "relaxing with a glass of wine" ...
As long as you watch your total fluid intake...enjoy!  :beer1;
I have educated my friends to know if I have a tea or coffee I usually only drink half (and it's not a reflection on their drink!!!) and out I either have a g and t or small glass of wine/champagne and then switch to iced water.
I have tried drinking on dialysis (on Boxing Day one year) with a gin and tonic and ice with my turkey sandwich which was interesting as I didn't feel the effects at all so I assume the alcohol got filtered out!!!  :guitar:

My husband does home-hemo. I am his care partner and also the one that does the grocery shopping. I'm not the one however, that bought that package of hot dogs I found in the fridge.

I never drink any alcohol because a nephrologist told me many years ago
that alcohol is very bad for the kidneys and damages their delicate filtration.
I wonder whether or not this medical statement is still valid?

From this post I'd say its a bit of a grey area depending on volume consumed:

That's saying for women no more than one per day and men two per day. 

My big question with that is if four per month all in one day is really bad as compared to one per day over four days in a month.  I don't drink at home, so its more in social settings say biweekly that I drink, up to a few.

Well I'd say that liquid restriction alone is not very good for kidneys, neither is  HD itself, so enjoy a lovely drink again!

Kristina, the odd alcoholic drink is not going to damage kidneys, working or not.  The main effect is on the liver which metabolizes alcohol, and only then, if drunk in excess.  We are no different than anyone else in that respect.  I rarely drink anymore, just the odd drink here and there.

Spirits are better than beer or cider or wine
Less fluid/less potassium/phosphate.
Taken in moderation ...
I probably have 1-2 alcoholic drinks at the most a month...
I do enjoy it occasionally  :wine;
The biggest problem I find is alcohol dehydrates me and makes me thirsty!
