If what you want to post is relevant, just add on to the old topic.  People do it all the time.  Otherwise, we get like 5 topics spanning the years, all covering the same old territory.

I think it's more friendly to allow new posts that may have duplicate content.  On another form people get fairly nasty with did you search the archive questions.  Part of that is the people, the other part the rules.

While I'm not looking to rock the boat on any forum, it can easily happen.
Appreciate your response here and is what I would normally be doing.
(I put myself on ultra-good-behavior here)

I also endeavor to check on responders to my posts (out of interest and curiosity) and Search is not always helpful.

Regards your : I'm not a Moderator nor do I play one on TV

Ha, so what do you play as, if I'm not being to nosy?

Ha, two points of view. Both responses are correct in my mind eye. :clap;
Is what I expected, so basically it boils down to do ' what feels right at the moment', as long as the forums rules are adhered too.
OOOOps, and the Mod's don't raise a fuss over it.

I've never seen anyone get upset over this issue.  If you are a newbie and find an old topic that you want to add to because it fits right into your current concerns, that's fine!  No one will mind, and other newbies may be glad that you did.  If you create a "new" topic on an issue that may be "old", no problem.  However, you will probably discover that older members will post links to old posts, but that's to give you further info, not to chide you.

If you want to be alerted to any responses to a particular topic, click onto "Notify" at the bottom on the right hand side.  You'll get an email alert.

You might have missed the on another forum part of my post?  I guess the point is the more rules you have the more likely they are violated and that that violation bugs someone.

Iolaire, I didn't quite understand what you meant by "form"; I see now it was just a typo.  Do you mean another site?  But back to the original poster's question, it's not a RULE, rather, it's just a suggestion to think twice before responding to a very old topic, that's all.  No hard and fast rule!

So no one gets a wrong impression regards my take on forum rules

Basic forum rules are a necessity.
Rules can / and must be enforced, or a forum can get wild and almost out of control.
Generally spammers and trolls are behind most of any forum ruckus, and no Am not saying that's the case here.

The 'Search' function is a strange beast, on my blog and the forums I take part in.
Have looked for Wordpress plugins that would enhance the Search function, on my blog but to-date, none really do a good job of it.

Is interesting when a new register does plead, wanting to 'learn' and the the very first post question  is almost identical to many already posted comments.
So yes, can relate to both sides of the 'do I do or don't I do' issue of adding to 'over 120 days' posts, and using Search function.
