I am curious, HemoDoc, if you are opposed to profit in medicine, how much profit did you make as a physician?

That is a bizarre question. What does profit in medicine have to do with a person getting paid to work. ????  Despite what you are insinuating, doctors are just paid for their work , unless they own part of a corporation (which most of us dont).  No one works for free, unless you are offering to start yourself and show us the way.  Doctors may be "God like"'( thats a joke) but we still have bills to pay and in most cases families to care for.

That is indeed a bizarre and frankly offensive question.  And why would this be the start of a new thread.  Absolutely ridiculous.

Not only an inappropriate question (you have serious boundary issues), but also shows a lack of understanding the concept of non-profit medicine.

Why don't you call your own doctor and ask that and see what he says!  Really?

Is this a joke? What does his income have to do with anything? Is he not allowed to get paid for his job? So you can't care about what you do and get paid too?

NDXUfan..all your posts are like this.  It seems like you're always attacking someone.  You might want to go see a different doctor for that and believe me when I tell you that I'm not trying to be funny.

Huh, where did this come from???

Since I didn't own any business, my profit technically is zero. Was I paid well? Yes. Is that a surprise.

Now, pray tell, what does that have to do with my opposition to for profit medicine? The National Health Services in England typically pays their primary care docs much more than what we made here in the US. What does that have to do with the issue of corporate profits.

In fact, I was paid well in a non-profit organization that as a patient provided for me in abundance compared to these horrible for-profit dialysis providers. I greatly miss my stand alone Kaiser dialysis facility in Kaiser Sunset in LA. They are completely non-profit. They pay there nurses, doctors and ancillary staff at a much higher rate than the average for-profit workers.

None of my wages were at risk with patient treatments. That is a clear difference with many of the for-profit organizations that pay the docs and patients from the same pot. Kaiser has outcomes that bode well. I understand well the benefits as a physician in a non-profit organization to take care of my patients without pre-approval for every procedure and referral.

So, not sure what logic is behind this bizarre question, but the answer is that non-profit medical organizations historically outperform the for-profit organizations.

You are missing the point, Obsidianom.  My point is that no one works for free, physicians or anyone else.  People respond to incentives, regarding transplants and everything else in this world.  My point is that the same people who expect the kidney donor to work for free, do not work for free themselves.  I do not work for free and neither do you.  I was not the person complaining about profit in medicine, was I?

Yes, kidney donotrs have families to feed and bills to pay, just as do physicians.

My point is that people respond to incentives, nothing more or less.  I would love to have you as my physician, because I like non-profit medicine and Davita is a bunch of flunkies, nor am I am a fan of insurance companies.  When you wrote your post on "Davita, The Billing King," I could not have agreed more, I was with those clowns for five years and almost lost my fistula because of their stupidity.

I am curious, if the NHS pays so much more than we do in the United States, why would there be a shortage of physicians?  Why do I read so much complaining about NHS in the English newspapers?  I am not arguing, just wondering why that would be?  I would not send my dog to Davita or Fresenius, Kaiser would be fine.....  I really do love the IU staff, especially the Nursing staff, they are compensated very well, which helps the dialysis patient.  I agree, physician wages to be tied to patient treatments is bizarre.  If you are curious, I do love my primary care/endocrinologist, he is not in the for profit care camp, either.   You have to realize that I spent alot of time in politics and there is alot of "Do as I Say, Not as I Do" in politics.

We also agree on home dialysis, I had to leave In-Center because I could not stand to hear the hypocrisy week, after week, after week.......  Standards that have no bearing in reality, individuals who believed that they were not to be questioned.  I am sure Kaiser was much better than Davita or Fresenius, who have such a low standard......  Going to Davita and Fresenius is like going to a county jail.

My response to you was in no way an act of a board moderator, just as your calling out Hemodoc has nothing to do with the point you so inadequately tried to make.  You have an undergrad degree in Econ.  So I, or anyone else for that matter, should be impressed?

Ironically, this is a perfect example of what galvo was getting at. Do you really need to take that tone and devolve into childish name-calling? (with galvo of all people?!)

I also found the initial question beyond the pale for a number of reasons, all of which have already been stated from the first reply onward.
