Invasion of Privacy

Last week my nurse called me and wanted to set a date and time where she can stop by my house and look at the machine.  I told her Wednesday (today) will be a good time after I come home from work.  She agreed.  Yesterday as I was preparing to get on the machine.  My nurse called me.  She stated that she was 5 minutes from my house.  I told her we agreed to Wednesday, why are you coming now.  She stated she was in the area.  I stated that I did not expect her to come to my house and I’m not dress and about to get on the machine.  Also, I have to get up very early in the morning.  I’m really tried and don’t feel like entertaining any guess.  She stated it will only take 15 minutes.  I stated, no, I’m really, really tried and we agreed that you will come on Wednesday.  I’m not dress and I’m about to get on the machine.  I don’t want to get off too late because I have to get up in the morning.  I don’t dialyze on Wednesdays and that’s why we agreed Wednesday will be perfect for me.   She went on and on about how it will only take 15 minutes and she not coming on Wednesday bah, bah, bah….   So she decided to come over anyway after I told her not to come because I’m not in the mood to see anyone.  Well to her surprise, I did not answer my door at all.
   
Now I do understand that things come up but if she is going to change the date, I feel she should have told be way in advance so I would be ready for her.  To pop up at a patient’s house unannounced is very unprofessional and lack of respect for the patient not to mention invasion of the patient's privacy. 

Now I would like to know how I can prevent this from happening again.  Please share your opinions.

 That nurse showed a total lack of professionalism. You were right in sticking to your guns and not allowing her to come in at her convenience. Bravo for you!

Good job on sticking to your guns. If you'd answered the door, it would have sent a message that it's really ok to barge in on you after you said "no." She tried it once and it didn't work. Hopefully she learned her lesson and it won't be an issue in the future.

Good for you not to answer the door! What happened to respect for people in general?!
If you called a friend & they said they weren't in the mood for company, would you go ahead and go over? NO! You would understand that they didn't want company!! This "nurse" needs sensitivity training or something!

Here's part II:

This nurse really got a lot of nerves.  So she calls my job and tells me that she wants to reschedule but she only coming to my house on business hours.  I stated, really, well I get off of work at 6pm and do not arrive home until 7:30pm.  I’m not taking a day off for you to come to my house to check the machine on business hours.  She stated, well I’m not making this up.  I’m not going to put myself in a twist for no one.  I stated, excuse me, you showed up at my house unannounced.  We agreed to a specific date and time and you showed up early.  She’s stated, well…, I hung up the phone on her and called the head person of the center.   I explained to him what happened and he agreed that it was very unprofessional for her to show up at my house unannounced and he will talk to her.   He will get back to me to reschedule on a Wednesday after I come home from work. 

Really don’t need this added stress.

That nurse doesn't belong in her job. It sounds like she really doesn't get it that her job is to help people who are already hurting, not to kick them when they're down.  to her!

boy CW... a big    to you.  I admire how you handled it !! ANd! and will try and keep it in my head that that is the right way to be.  Im such a whimp i probably would have succumbed to her offencive ways,  but seeing this, well!! has certainly put it into perspective!!

I actually reported a nurse for something like this before.  I was doing PD at home, and I lived in a semi basement apartment at the time.  I did have an appointment with this nurse that day, and she called me to make sure that I remembered she was coming and at what time she'd be there.  She arrived a half an hour earlier than I expected, and when she did come, I was hooked up to the machine, and was draining, so I couldn't disconnect.  When I didn't come to the door, she went to my bedroom window and started banging on it.  She actually waited outside the 20 minutes it took for my run to finish, banging on the damn window the whole time.  When I was finished, I went to the door and told her to leave, and never come back.  She actually called my mother to complain about me, but I'd already talked to my mother and I don't think that Mom had anything nice to say to her.

Thanks everyone for your opinions and sharing your experience.  I'm gald I was able to vent here as most of my friends will not understand; and, some do not know I'm dailyizing.  I haven't heard anything yet but I will keep you posted.   

@Riki, did you still deal with the nurse after your experience or did you requested another nurse?

How rude and just WRONG!!  My personal idea would be to verbally and in writing notify her of your wishes and remind her of HIPPA laws to stop calls at work. You never know (I'm in I.T. Industry) if calls are being monitored. If so it's clearly a HIPPA violation. Good for not answering the door!!  Sounds to me someone needs to be reminded they are not "all powerful"!!!!  Just saying!!  G.

I did, and still do.  She's the head nurse at the unit I go to now.  There were other nurses that did PD visits, but they took turns, so I'd get whoever's turn it was that week.

CW you really should follow this up to the end.  If I were you, I would even ask to check my personal file to see if she has made any negative remarks such as you being a non-compliant patient.  Something like that can and often does effect your standing with doctors. 

There have been patients who have been affected on the transplant list and/or even dismissed from a transplant clinic for being labeled non-compliant!
