I went to dialysis this evening and guess what, 5 workmen rebuilding the nurses station.  All were wearing  work closthes, drilling, sawing , hammering....you name it they're doing it in the treatment area.  Even opening up ceiling tiles right next to patiients.  The air was heavy with sawdust.  I can't believe they were hooking up patients  while all this is going on.  I left and said I value my health and my life and won't stay.  I'm going back tomorrow and complain to the administrator.  I can't believe that this is allowed.

When they were renovating my old dialysis unit a few years ago, the workmen had set up a canvas barrier between the work area and the patient area.  The only opening was a zippered porthole that the work men had to step through.  I don't remember seeing any of the work men for the couple of months that they were there, could hear them, though.. *L*  There are things that can and should be done, for the sake of patient safety.  It's good for you to complain.

Smart choice. In my 10 and counting years in dialysis I have never experienced anything like that. It HAS TO BE ILLEGAL!!!  But good for you stand up and take charge for you saftey and well being. I'm positive infection or worse very well could have happened to you!  Take it to the top of the chain!  Find out all the players of ownership and related doctors in charge and read them the riot act!!  I would contact an attorney to make sure they know this is unacceptable and endangers your life by missing a treatment due to apparent negligence and just plain stupidity. Take pictures if you still can!  This is wrong on so many levels. I'm glad you were smart enough not to blindly follow instructions!!  Can't believe the answer was "what can I do about it"!!  Unacceptable to be playing with your life like that!!  UGH makes me so mad!!!  G.

Great cooler head advise. But on the hoot you either blur images or ask for a release form to be signed. We take picture at my center all the time. Thing we see that concern us or just my in center dialysis family. We sign release for photos or choose not to and it's very east to blur an image. Sorry this reall got my blood boiling. So unsafe and the response to your concern was ridiculous!!  Good luck man hope it never happens again!!

Wow, Im not surprised though.  John doesnt have to worry about that at home.  Let us know what you find out, but 9 times out of 10, it will fall on deaf ears!

The construction was approved by the facility adminstrator and higher ups.  It should be done during off hours.  Complaining to them will probably get you nowhere. Immediately contact the Maryland Commission on Kidney Disease.  Its mandates are

ahem.... Kit is on nocturnal, so they were working at night. In addition to the unhealthful situation, can you imagine anyone trying to SLEEP????

Also, I'm not sure it would do her any good to contact the folks in Maryland as she is in Californ-eye-a.

But for the charge nurse to say "what can I do about it?" is grossly irresponsible in addition to being insensitive.

BAH!

I didn't sleep a wink last night worrying about what to do.  I decided to talk to my nephrologist.  He usually comes into the facility to see his patients on Sunday night so I wanted to find out if he saw what I saw.  He told me he wasn't there last night so I told him everything that happened and what was said.  He told me he would talk to the administrator and then see me Tuesday night to talk.  I did take pictures with my cell phone as best I could through the glass door between the treatment area and the lobby so it is documented.  I just don't understand how people entrusted with our care can be so thoughtless.

I hope your nephrologist can have a say on when the work is to be done or at least on how to make it safe and as inconvenient as possible for patients to receive treatment.

my bad...
