The other day at D, my dr approached me and asked if I was ready to do PD again..............
Just to recap what happened the first TWO times, I got an infection (not peritonitis) , a pretty bad one, winding me up in the hospital for over a week both times.
The last time, the surgeon told me it was likely that I am allergic to the tubing, so my body is rejecting it, causing the infections. He said he would refuse to do the surgery again.
SO, I told the dr this, the other day, and he said, "we can get another surgeon..."
Uhm, if I AM allergic to it, wouldnt the outcome be the same the third time around??? Although, they DO say Thirds times a charm, I dont think that applies in this case. As much as I would like to be free of the chair, I dont think I should even entertain the idea.
Rather confusing...

Also, the doctor I have is part of a group of 3 doctors, all of which I see at some point every month. One of them (not my 'official' doctor) had said I am allergic to the dializer, while my official doctor didnt seem to think that was possible... Confusing.

Gothiclovemonkey,

What exactly was happening to you that the doc thinks you are allergic.  If it was an infection, I'm sure they would have tested to see what type and what type of bacteria it was.      I would think you would have a reaction to the tubing rather than an infection as an infection is usually caused by some type of bacteria... not tubing..    I would suggest seeing another PD nephrologist from a different center not associated with yoru current for a second opinion...

What type of dialysis are you doing now?   How long have you been on dialysis ?

I am on incenter hemo, been doing dialysis for 5 and a half years now.
Ive tried pd twice, about 2 years between tries. Both times I wound up in the hospital with some issue. The first time, im not exactly sure what happened but about one month into doing PD, the fluid wasnt coming out of me at all, i ended up with 53lbs of fluid inside my tummy. It took me a week to convince the doctor that that was NOT my normal anatomy and that something was wrong. Finally, I go to a different hospitals ER, they admit me. They removed the tube, and put a new one in, and i got peritonitis while i was in the hospital, so they decided to take it out.

Then when I switched clinics/doctors when I moved, they asked me why I wasnt doing PD, and I told them what had happened. Doc suggests I try again, and I do. Everything is going fine, for about a month, and I start having pain at the access point. very low temp, and again the fluid isnt coming out like it should, I notice fibrin. They admit me, and remove the tube. No signs of infection or and tests show no peritenitis or  anything, but i have cellulitis? and they have to put a drain tube in, which i have  for a long time. The surgeon says he thinks im allergic to the tubing, or maybe because I am "too fat" , either way, my body is rejecting the tube. (Ive heard of people far bigger than me having absolutely no problem with pd. Also, I have been known to get infections from dissolveable stitches not dissolving...)
