Third Hospital Stay for the year!!!

Here I am in hospital again!!  This time it is due to foolhardiness on my part. Every semester I take my French class from the Community College here to French St. Martin for a weekend where they are tested and do a project.  Well, this year we took a charter and it left Friday morning to bring us back Sunday.  You guys know my dialysis days are M-W.F.  Because our dialysis unit is so full now, it was impossible to get to change with someone, so I decided to go along and miss the dialysis, thinking I would be careful with my fluids,etc.
By Sunday, I was very breathless.  Sunday afternoon I went into the sea for about an hour and when I came out I did not even have the energy to pick up my towel, slippers and sunglasses off the beach chair.  Some of my students had to help me to my room.  They called an ambulance and I was off to the hospital.  At first they were going to dialyse me, but they changed their mind.  they gave me oxygen, Lasix, did blood tests, EKG and gave me a patch for the airplane journey to the BVI (only 30 mins flight).  I went straight to the hospital here, where they called the dialysis nurses on call and dialysed me Sunday night.
I am feeling very well now - my breath is back, but they still have me here in the hospital.  I wanted to go to work tomorrow, but I think they are punishing me for missing my dialysis.  I will NEVER do that again!

wow!! i'm sorry to hear that your trip was interrupted by this mishap!! I am curious though, you said they gave you lasix... do you still urinate? I'm just wondering how lasix would work on someone who doesn't urinate.

I've only been on dialysis for about six months, but I've noticed that people who don't watch their renal diet and fluid restriction wind up in the hospital.  I hate hospitals.

I am so sorry that happened to you Bajanne . I find this tale a little worrying - Laurie had surgery on Monday to repair a hernia . As he is on PD , the doctor has decided to rest him off dialysis for 2 - 3 weeks to heal his abdomen and " see how he goes " . When the hernia was first diagnosed he had no dialysis for two or three days , while they switched him from manual PD to a machine and his blood tests were horrendous - creatinine 708 and GFR<7 . When I questioned the doctor on the wisdom of this decision based on the results of his bloods he said he was not concerned about the numbers as long as Laurie felt OK . Define OK I was thinking ! Still conscious ? still breathing ? Sorry I am just having a rant - but I am apprehensive . They sent him home from hospital less than 24 hours after the surgery !

It is very important for patients to understand what their EDW (Estimated Dry Weight) is as well as how to calculate  how much fluid to remove - also, to be able to tell if staff are entering the correct amount in the machine. The machine panel tells how much fluid is being removed, ... patients should be educated so they can check the machine numbers --- staff are not perfect and mistakes do happen >> Also, patients should ask their dietician how much fluid they should be drinking as well as clear guidelines for dietary intake... each patient is individual with thier own medical needs/problems, therefore, cookie cutter information does not work

Bajanne, I know you had problems and it sounds like you are getting there, naughty person, but did you enjoy the bit of freedom. Did you enjoy that dip in the sea, was it worth it. Take care.

Well, I am feeling great these days.  I WILL NEVER MISS DIALYSIS AGAIN!!!

Yes I do still urinate, not copiously but every day at least twice.

I don't usually have a problem with potassium, but when I was tested by the hospital in St. Martin my potassium was very high.  (Could it be those two bananas I ate at a friend's house in St.Martin? shush, don't tell anyone!)

But my bottom line now is that I can no longer take any kind of chances, with either my dialysis or my diet!
