I have been coughing for a year now. I cough my guts out to the point that I pee my pants (no pun intended to those who dont pee) It feels like something has been tickling me in the back of the throat.

My doctor only wants to give me Robintusin(sp?) with Codine and a stomach reflux, which I have not had a problem with since last June. But Im still coughing. Im sick and tired of being told I cant have certain things Because of dialysis.

Im sorry Im sick to my head of this lifestyle. If the dotors tell me they cant do anything for my cough because im on dialysis. Well guess what. Im going to go to hospice. I cant take it anymore. If i stop dialysis then they cant use me being on dialysis as an excuse not to give me anything for my cough.

Been on the list for nearly 5 years, and not a single call. I tired of coming on here all the time and people who have not been on the list half as long as I have get a call for a kidney but I cant get a single false call.

I kind of have the same issue Lisa, but I cough until I puke - and that's the relatively good one. The ones that hurt are when I feel like I'm going to throw a lung. Takes me back to my smoking days  ;) I don't have a good answer as to what you can do, just wanted you to know you weren't alone in this. My Neph referred me back to my PCP, and I guess that's the next step. We'll see what he has to say. Hang in there lady, there's a lot to stick around for.

Are you on any BP meds?  Quite a few have the itchy throat symptom, especially the generics.  If you are, you may be able to try switching them.  Wouldn't hurt to give it a shot.  Please don't do hospice out of frustration.  You shouldn't allow something as simple as an annoying cough push you over the edge it's just not worth it.  I know there is a spray that stores sell to numb sore throats.  You may want to ask your doctor if you can try that.  If your throats numb you shouldn't have the urge to cough.

I'm agree with Steve...check your meds to see if dry throat is a side affect...hubs had this for a while and would cough till he puked.  Turned out his was due to inadequate dialysis.  After switching to nocturnal and his clearance numbers getting better, the cough disappeard.  Wishing you the best, little friend.   :cuddle;

lisinopril is one of the BP med that cause it- my dr switched me to micardis and it stopped, I am not ESRD though. Please ask a different Dr. Tell him you're ready to give up because of it.

Are you on any statin drug? Statin drugs are used to lower cholesterol levels and may cause side effects such as coughing. What does your doctor say about other possible medication interaction? Have they ruled out chronic bronchitis?
Another thought, is it possible that it's fluid retention in your chest? Have they done an ultrasound or xray?
You sound very frustrated and I would be too. Coughing for a year?? Jeeez!!
Do you know what your antibody level is? Perhaps there's a reason you seem to wait longer that others on the list.
What about a living donor? Forgive me if you've answered all this before, I am off the forum periodically on another volunteer project.

I had a nasty cough for quite awhile and I would sometimes cough cough so hard I would throw up. They had no reason why I was having this problem for over a year, I wasn't on BP meds either. Then it just stopped, now i still have a slight cough every now and then but not nothing like before.

Hang in there, I know that it can seem like there is no out in sight but things will get better.  Don't got off dialysis and into hospice. If you just want someone to talk to that understands your frustration I'm here.  :cuddle;

Do you have tonsils?

Sometimes material and debris can get caught in the folds of your tonsils and are called "tonsilliloths". Sometimes you can see them, white things caught in the back of your throat..though sometimes you can't see them at all. If you have them, they can make you cough as well. It's a pretty common problem as well.

Allergies and dust are possibilities as well.

I'd get another opinion, if possible from a nose and throat specialist.

 I only take the renal vitamin, birth control pills (now finally), Hectrol, a iron pill, and a stool softner. No heart or bp meds. Yes  my antibody is quite high, like i think the last I heard 80. I have not had a living donor step forward.

Thanks,
Lisa

I had post nasal drip for over a year and it made me cough like that.  When the doctor finally gave me something to stop that drip the cough went away.  It was irritating my throat which caused me to cough.

That may be what I have because my nose does drip like a faucet. lol

Make me the person my dog thinks I am

Lillupie   - I too have couphing spells.  No reason why they start, but I've coughed so hard beside hurting my chest, I've passed out, once while driving to work - woke up I had crossed 2 lanes of road way and was on the sidewalk heading toward a mail box.  Luckily, it was 4am and no one else on the road, no parked cars, and no one walking on the sidewalk.  Scared the H out of me.   I thought is was because of the dry air as it seems that if I'm in a vehicle with the A/C on it will start or if I'm home and the A/C is on, it will trigger it.  Glad to read the dryness is more from D or PD than anything else.  I can normally control it with cough drops, but other time - nothing works.   Grumpy

Whenever I have that kind of coughing and tickle in the back of my throat, it means I'm out of allergy medication. Do you have allergies? Do you take anything for them if you do? Once I start taking my zyrtec again the coughing stops immediately. It might be worth a try; allergies can develop at any age.

Desert Dancer   Not on any type of allergy meds.  The last time I tried them, none worked.  And some seemed to make it worse.  Grumpy
