Life is great!

« on: February 05, 2007, 07:33:27 PM »

Hi Everyone.

Almost didn't make it home.  My kidneys didn't get me but a DVT (deep vein thrombosis) almost did.  Been a bit touch and go for the past week but still here to tell the tale.  I have only recently gone onto Epo and I am wondering if that is what might have caused it.  The doctors weren't sure and said it could just have been something totally unrelated to my kidney condition.  But hey, the Maldives was spectacular and even though I have said before that I wouldn't get a transplant, I think now I might just put my name on the list so I can go back there one day.

I am only just back in Australia so I will post pics in the next couple of days.  It is hard to explain how glorious this place was so the pics are the only way I can do it.  Lots seemed to be happening here while I have been away so I will do a catch up once I have a spare couple of hours.  Straight off the plane and straight back to work and probably start dialysis in the next couple of weeks.  Busy, busy. Did pop in briefly to read up on the Epo shots and your stories and that really helped with my anxiety about the drug and its side effects.  Until later.   Love to you all.  Cindy. xxx

Hi, there,

glad to hear you're well!  A long flight can cause a DVT; if you're at risk - as you obviously are, since it happened once - your doctor can prescribe a blood thinner (probably a few heparin shots) if you have to fly again.  EPO would only increase your risk of clotting if it allows your hemoglobin to get too high - >13 puts patients at greater risk for cardiac events, stroke, and clotting.  In general, EPO is tolerated well and you should be closely monitored with regular bloodwork.

Sounds like you had a wonderful time, I'm looking forward to seeing the pics.

Glad to see you made it back hope all is OK now. Sounds like you had a great honeymoon. I have been on Epo for 6 months now and haven't had any problems yet.

Hi Cindy,

Welcome back. Definitely sorry to hear about the DVT... my mother suffered a DVT which went to her lungs and 6 years later she was dead :( I just hope yours was confined to the leg.

Glad you are back and maybe you shouldn't rush straight back to work???! hmm anyway take care of you. we will wait patiently for those pictures to make us all jealous :)

take care and look forward to reading more soon.

Incidently I am not on epo but on Anaresp (same sort of thing I gather) and seems to work fine with no problems. :) I don't even have to worry about it anymore as the unit administer it now during dialysis.. I don't even have to pay for it upfront now!

I found Aranesp worked better for me but then when I went on HD they made me do what the unit does  ::)

Hi! Welcome back, firstly! Secondly, I also have a DVT. I have had it for 3 years (I'm 19 now, so I got it when I was 16.), and there's nothing that the doctors can do about mine bc of how big it is and where it is. Mine was from a gene mutation called Factor V (five) Liden. I am also on dialysis and recieve epo shots twice a month and Venifer once a month. Neither has had any effect on my DVT or my PT/INR. Anyway, welcome back and good luck!
