I thought maybe a pillow would 'muffle' the sound, I guess not?

Diagnosed with Polycystic Kidney Disease at age 19.
Renal Failure at age 38 (2010) came about 2 hrs close to dying. Central line put in an emergency.
Began dialysis on Aug 15, 2010.
Creatine @ time of dialysis: 27. I almost died.
History of High Blood Pressure
I have Neuropathy and Plantar Fasciitis in My Feet
AV Fistula created in Nov. 2011, still buzzing well!
Transplanted in April, 2013. My husband and I participated in the Living Donor paired exchange program. I nicknamed my kidney "April"
Married 18 yrs,  Mom to 3 kids to twin daughters (One that has PKD)  and a high-functioning Autistic son

It does seem to be true that a pillow amplifies the sound. ::)

Uh oh     :(

Maybe if this thing really drives me nuts at night when I'm trying to sleep I'll sleep with headphones on, with my mp3 player       :rofl;    to drone out the loudness of it (if its loud)

If I am laying down, and have my arm along my side, i am not aware of anything unusual.  But all i have to do is bend my arm up towards my head (still laying down though, with arm flat on bed) and i can hear my pulse rushing.  I'm hearing it INSIDE my ear, not through my arm.

One thing I forgot to mention:  a few months after i had the surgery, I started experiencing some unusual heartbeats, even a disrhythmia.  i learned that the increased flow back to my heart from the fistula was messing with my heartbeat.  It eventually resolved.

just curious, how exactly do u exercise a fistula? do u exercise the arm, or how do u exercise a vein/artery?

You exercise the arm.  One exercise that is widely recommended is squeezing a tennis ball with the hand of the fistula arm.  It depends on where the fistula is, though.

i thought u werent suposed to use the arm, or very limited?
idk, it just seems to be contradictory, im  PD and would never volutarily get a fistula unless i had no other options, but im curious tho

bleija,

It's both!  You need to exercise it so that the vein will be strengthened by the increased blood flow.  Actually dialysing through the vein will strengthen it too.  But at the same time you have to protect it from damage: so certain other exercises would not be recommended.  Not to worry about right now!  (and hopefully never)  :)
