I have always been told it is better to suck on some ice chips than to drink water to help cure the thirst.

Well, I get very tired of the same old thing day after day.  My G/f came up with an idea, what do you think, and do you have any other suggestions:

She take Ice Tea, or Lemon Aid and makes them into Ice cubes.  Just before I go to D, she takes them out of the freezer and puts them in a large plastic cup for me to "suck on" during dialysis.  Last we she made "coffee cubes".

It works, and she switches it up so I get different flavors and don't get too bored.

That's very thoughtful of her and it sounds creative. And certainly more interesting than boring old ice cubes, which I frequently eat. I think I'm going to start jazzing them up by freezing fruit juices. Thanks for the suggestion.

One unit I was visiting had a novel idea. They had a crushed ice machine for cold packs or for patients to suck on. They put flavored liquid on the crushed ice to make snowcones.
They had cherry, orange and lime. Was very enjoyable treat.

Omg, this idea is AWESOME! Haha. I'm definitely going to have to give this a try! My mom just got me a pretty pink cup to hold my ice chips...how much better it will be with flavored goodies inside.  :clap;

She makes a pot of coffee w/ a little (non-dairy) cream and sugar.  Then puts them in the ice cube trays to freeze over night!  It is definitely a different taste, but I LOVE COFFEE hot or cold, so it works for me.  ENJOY!

Thanks for putting that up! Never thought of that. My husband is tired of it too. After while i think he gets bored of it and ends up with a full glass of juice which ends up adding to his fluid level. This just might help. Grapes? Another good one.

I do this too. I buy ice cube bags and fill several up with different flavours of squash. That way I always have a variety.

I also have an ice cube grinder which makes larger ice cubes into chips and on a different setting it grinds the ice to a fine powder. I use it make my own granita/sorbet style snacks. 30ml of flavoured powdered ice is a lot more refreshing than 30ml of fluid.

that was my next question. Do you all crush the ice by hand? My frig no longer has the crushed ice thingy in the door. And I think Ice cubes are kind of big to just pop into your mouth. Suggestions???

I swear by freezer pops, the 2oz. kind you keep on the shelf and pop into freezer when needed. There are many brands and flavors (some sugar free). I always have a few in the freezer at all times. And even though only 2oz (others come in 1 or 1.5oz) it really helps with a dry throat/mouth and prevents me from drinking a whole glass of water. My favorites are Wyler's Italian Ice. Yummy!  :2thumbsup;

I have a kids snow cone maker and do the same thing.  I don't like ice cubes, but I love flavored crushed ice!

Just make sure that the flavoring on your ice chips doesn't contain phosphoric acid, which will raise your phosphorus to the outer limits.
