So I started dialysis almost a year ago now and I have to take certain medications to help not throw up.  Dialysis makes me vomit.  Everyday as soon as I leave, I am throwing up and I do it for the rest of the day.  On my off days, I usually end up throwing up again.  There is nothing they can do.  But it is wearing me out that I just can't take it anymore.  I can't find anyone local to talk to it about and was curious if any of you go through this?  I really want to stop dialysis because I can't handle this vomiting all day everyday anymore.  It stops me more than anything else from being able to spend quality time with my family.

Appreciate someone to talk to.

Thanks

You sound like you are on hemo, don't know much about that because husband is on PD but lots of people will help you out on here.I think it is quite common.

The last few months i have been getting sick after i eat.  I have lost about 20 pounds in a short while.  I am thinking it may be the Renvela i am taking with meals.  My Neph doesnt think it is that.  He said if it continues he is going to have some tests done.  I dont want to think of what it might be.  Thus i kinda dont want to take the tests.....

I do PD.
Sorry not an answer to your question but your not alone..

I am not a candidate for doing home dialysis or PD as some of you call it.  My sugars are not controlled.  I don't take Renvela... I do suffer gastroporisis and neuropathy.  It doesn't matter what I eat or drink and most of them time, there is nothing in my system at all and I just start getting sick.  It's all acid that comes out.  I took Renvela for a few weeks but then my levels worked themselves out.  I have to take compazine prior to dialysis at home and then while I am there they give me Reglan.  Nothing helps.. only thing that helps prolong the throwing up for a little while is a vanilla milkshake.. but even then a few hours later I end up hacking..

I spent the first year of Dialysis spending most mornings and evenings throwing up.  Sometimes it takes a good chunk of time for your body to adjust to the trauma of Dialysis.  I was down to 105 pounds for a while.

I'm hopeful that once you pass that phase the vomiting will diminish.  I'm down to about once a week on average, which I can tolerate.

I was always nauseated on hemo. Lived on Zofran. But when I was really throwing up all the time, it was because my c.  diff was active. I would suggest seeing your gastroenterologist and making sure you don't have any secondary infections. Hopefully you're ok but you should make sure. Maybe like some people said your body needs time to adjust. But even though I;m on PD now I get nauseated a lot. I do a lot of breathing exercises and take Zofran.

My husband vomited so much the first year he spent most of it hospitalized to control it, then it tapered off to once a day....usually acid, but sometimes food. after year two he settled down to maybe 4 times a week, they did every test under the sun, the vomiting cost him his gallbladder, and STILL they kept saying,Its not the dialysis" they were full of sh@t. It was.

I vomit two or three times a week. I'm fine with that since I used to throw up a lot more before I was on hemodilaysis (I just celebrated my 1 yr anniversary on hemo). I'm more annoyed because my doctor also refuses to believe that its the diaysis/kidney failure. I was forced to see a gastro specialist who ran tons of intensive tests, only to be told that it was stemming from my kidney failure. My neph still tells me that I'm not really nauseous or if I am that I need to see a specialist. Whe nI explain for the millionth time that I did, he says "hmm." Like I'm making  it up.

Another reason I love this forum. I discover that others feel the same way. They feel sick like me and its normal. So relieved that I'm not crazy or a hypochondriac.

As some one who was on dialysis for 4.5 years and don't recall a time when i actually vomitted , my gut instinct is that is intestinal and small part down to dialysis.
i would be asking any medical professional who will listen for a 2nd,3rd,and 4th opinion.
good luck

I agree with Ang (but not his pun!  :rofl;) - I threw up once while on D, and that was from some dodgy dinner I had a few years back. In general I never even felt close to that sort of ill.

From reading your post, I am wondering if you are dibetic since you mentioned sugars and gastropheresis. If so then I might know someone ho had a similar situation with dialysis before getting a kidney and ancreas transplant.

Once a week or so I have a bad day following evening HD, when I'm nauseaus. Other following days I'm fine, but I can never forecast which days will be good and which bad.

My first year of hemo I lived on Compazine..even the thought of food made me sick. One time I made the mistake of eating a big dinner the night before and the next morning I threw up all over the nurse. But the nausea gradually decreased and I stopped the Compazine. My appetite gradually returned and I've even put on weight to make up for all I lost when my kidneys first failed.

For the first couple weeks of dialysis I got sick, it was really bad at first but then it started to clear up. Of course then I started cramping and I cramp every session no matter how much we try to prevent it. I'm getting great dialysis and we're not taking too much fluid off, I just cramp. Some days worse than others.

I dont remember vomitting a lot when I was on dialysis but I think it's because there's still a lot of unwanted wastes in our body which left after the dialysis process. Once they told me that dialysis only replace several percents of kidney's function.

i'd be gettitng somebody to your base weight, probably to low, thats usually the cause of cramping

I wasn't sick like this when I first started dialysis last March.. It started after about 2-3 months of doing dialysis.  I am actually at my base weight of 120 kilos.  I don't cramp, I just throw up all the time, sometimes before I leave for dialysis and then others it doesn't start until right after I get off the machines.  It has nothing to do with my Blood Pressure.  I don't have my gall bladder, it was taken out years ago.  They can't figure it out.  I talk to many doctors and they see me throwing up all the time, but don't suggest anything at all..  Most of the time because I clot the machine I usually do dialysis from 6:30-11 am instead of the regular four hours.
