I am still pre-Dialysis (GFR 10-12%) and I have taken supplements,
especially since my ESRF was diagnosed in 2006:

Haliborange Kids Omega 3 with Vitamins A C D & E (mornings)
& Vitalbiotica WellKid comprehensive vitamins, minerals plus omega 3 (lunch)

At my evening meal I take a teaspoonful (kids portion) of Vitabiotics Feroglobin
(liquid Iron, Zinc, minerals & Vitamin B complex (B12 etc.)

I take Kids-portions because I suffer from sensitivity to many medications,
so the theory is, and it seems to be borne out in praxis, that I am better off taking a small dose.

A few months ago a comprehensive blood-test found I was lacking nothing.

These supplements, together with my (vegetarian) diet, seem to be working for me.

Good Luck from Kristina.

On advice from my dietitian, I take the following:

1.  Dialyvite 800 w/Zinc  multivitamin (after dialysis on dialysis days)
2.  Selenium 100 mcg (ditto)
3.  L-Carnitine 1000 mg (ditto)

Long-term dialysis patients are known to be susceptible to zinc deficiency and/or selenium deficiency.

And L-Carnitine, a nutrient important for the metabolism of fatty acids, is a small molecule of low molecular weight and it's not easily bound to proteins.  So it's easily dialyzed out and must be replenished with supplements.  Otherwise, long-term dialysis can lead to dialysis-related carnitine deficiency.

That's what I take, although the smell of it makes it difficult for me to swallow.

I take Renivite and also get liquid nutrition with my dialysis - that's really helped a lot. It might be worth looking into.

Renaltabs, best products and so helpful. They have 4 different types of vitamins, all have the full 1 mg of folic needed. Also they are carrying a generic phosphate binder that is good and cost for all their stuff is the best anywhere. If you want to talk to good caring people and get a good deal on those vitamins call those guys. 800-345-3838 they have a website to order also its www.renalabs.com  its not a slick website but these guys are saving us money

I don't take any vitamins, but I do eat well.

Mix your diet by eating both oriental and occidental cuisines. Boiled, braised and roast meats. Don't cut off all the fat, it adds lots of flavour. Drink a glass of wine with a meal and an espresso sized coffee with a spirit. And don't go on fad diets.

Beats gobbling pills any day!  :2thumbsup;

Dialyvite by prescription was working. Wanted to change to add zinc, and the doc said I could take the OTC Dialyvite. I only found them on the manufacturer's website dialyvite.net, or Hillstad for other helpful stuff.

I believe we shouldn't be taking regular one-a-day vitamins, since we store the fat-soluble ones like A and they can build up to toxic levels. Gotta have me some zinc and magnesium too.

Just one more note: my skin gets so dry and sometimes itchy, esp in winter. AVEENO lotion with natural oatmeal and soy makes such a difference, esp on my feet. One more thing I'm not allergic to!

I have been after my own dietitian to find a powerful antioxidant that is relatively safe for ESRD patients to take.

Oxidative stress is a major health issue with us ESRD patients, and I figured that antioxidants wouldn't hurt.

Unfortunately, my dietitian believes that Pycnogenol and grape seed extract will be too high in potassium for me to take safely.  I asked her to look into green tea extract capsules too.  (No, I can't drink green tea; I just can't abide the taste of it.)

Vitamin D is good for dialysis. There are also certain factors to consider like eating a balanced diet and drinking plenty of water.

When I first started dialysis I was given Nephrovite, which was about $15 for a 100 count bottle.  Then I was told I could take Full Spectrum B plus C, which is OTC.  A bottle of 100 is $5.99 and has exactly the same vitamins as Nephrovite.

I had the same problem.  I mentioned it to my dietitian, who recommended 2,000 mg fish oil per day.  (Fish oil is high in omega-3 fatty acids.)  I started taking that--and within a few months, my skin got less dry and flaky, and less itchy.   Dialysis can remove fatty acids from the body, which is one reason our skin dries out.  So I take the fish oil after dialysis treatment on dialysis days.

I buy the "odorless/burpless" type of fish oil capsules, in enteric coating to pass through the stomach without stomach upset.

There are two skin lotions I rely on too:  Sarna Sensitive for occasional itching, and Lubriderm for moisturizing.  But they worked a whole lot better after I started taking fish oil daily.
