Ive just read a short article that states that more kidney transplants may be available as scientists have discovered that organs taken from a person whose heart stopped, work just as well as those from someone who is braindead. Anyone else add to this ? .( KS todays prolific poster ! )

That's ironic, Alan was told he could not have a transplant last week because of his heart problems.

UCLA is doing those - Death by Cardiac Determination (DCD). They talked about it in my orientation last month and included it as an option on the consent form, along with Extended Criteria Donor. The consent form says they "are less likely to function immediately and may have a greater risk of rejection" but apparently they have similar long-term survival rates to standard criteria deceased donor kidneys.
