I've been stage 4 for 5 years (GFR now 14), and have displayed very few symptoms until
recently. All of a sudden I have been getting a lot of water retention in my ankle to the point I
can hardly get my shoe on, however, I only have this problem in my left ankle. The right ankle
and leg look fine and do not seem to be retaining water.
I would not think that water retention is selective, and that both ankles would display swelling.
Is this normal ? Have any any of you experienced the same thing ?
                                                                            Thanks: Bruce   ???  ???

I don't know about "normal" but my left ankle always swells at a faster rate than my right.  I asked my doc once why the left will swell up and the right would be ok - he said it was nothing to worry about but didn't really explain why .... It could be as simple as you sleep on your left side so that's where it pools.

Do you liimp, at all, or have anything else happening on that side?  My DH is recovering from knee surgery, it was his right knee, and now his right foot is quite swollen, his left foot only slightly swollen.  Apparently its because of the trauma from surgery sending blood to that leg, combined with the lack of movement in that leg due to limping.

All this time I've been thinking that my left shoe is slightly smaller than my right...

Really?  Someone in the medical "know" told you this?  I work in the cardiac field and believe this to be false info.  Most peoples hearts are mid to left of their sternums, however, blood is pumped to both legs via arteries which have no relation to the position of the hearts apex.  I could be wrong, but it just sounds funny to me.
I think it has more to do with gravity and position of ones legs.
