Our nurse comes out and takes bloods once a month. She came yesterday and took them, to -day she phoned up and was really pleased about them and said "you can treat yourself" bless her, :sir ken; how nice. I did not tell her we actually "spoilt " our selves after she had left with the bloods. We had sausage and fried onion rolls for lunch and enjoyed every bit. How many of you "SPOIL" your selves now and again?  :clap;

guilty your honour. I think everyone knows that's how it works. I've had nurses even say "Well you had your monthly bloods last week, so if you want a little bit of chocolate.. go ahead!" and stuff like that. So yeah, I have maybe "celebrated" my monthlies by having a coke or something (ooh, yeah, I know how to party hard!  :rofl;) but at the same time I also know that it's not something to get carried away with. There's no point being good just for some labs, and naughty the rest of the time - I hardly want the call to come and then have them tell me well no my potassium is through the roof or something.....

My unit does not schedule the blood tests ... so they can happen almost anytime.
But my diet is very "open" as my potassium is low.

I try to follow a diet that is good for my transplant, since it's only for my good and my health. I have eaten junky stuff this week and had two iced lattes all week, but bad food is not my regular diet, and It is no accident that my twice-weekly labs are so good!  :bandance; :yahoo; :clap;

Early on I was given the advice that if your are going to cheat, do it right after they pull blood for labs.  I tried it.  I forget what I had the day after they pulled blood but the very next day when I went in I was told there was a problem and they were going to have to re-draw my blood.  :oops; I guess it would be better to cheat the day you get your results!

Knowledge is Power!

YLGuy, of everyone, you got the best information of all - you "cheated" the day before blood was drawn. You now know just what effect your indulgence is going to have on your body and can adjust up accordingly.

It is not cheating, it is everything in moderation. Live life!

We have ice cream and candy here. We adjust up with both the insulin and binders. We have bananas and platanos, but we spread them out and never have too many between any two dialysis sessions. But, we never adjust up because bloodwork is due. If we did, we wouldn't know how we were doing. I find it very disturbing that the dieticians encourage people to cheat on the blood test.

I hadn't treated myself to anything since I was first diagnosed with kidney disease.  (Even before my kidneys failed completely, I put myself on a very strict diet to delay dialysis as long as possible.)

My social worker and even my neph have actually been pushing me to take a break and enjoy myself at a nice restaurant.  (It was my social worker who pushed me into going to that college reunion I had posted about.)

I think they're concerned that all the restrictions of the dietary regimen have turned me into some kind of obsessive-compulsive.

Being on PD I spoil myself every day.  The one thing we tell our Kidney Beings attendees is that the one time you can definitely go off your diet is right after your lab draw for the month, cuz you have 30 days to get it right for next time!

yes that is my trick as well. I usually wait until the day of my labs and then spoil myself by eating cheese. Being on PD, I have a much liberal diet! The phos isnt a problem for me because 95% of the phos foods I dont like. Never will eat beans, creamy stuff, hate milk, ect. But cheese is a weaknesss.
Being that I am stuck doing ALL of the cooking at home. I have more a of aproblem finding all the indregrints(sp) for a recipe that Iwant then avoiding food I cant have.

The diet is restrictive but it is also important to *live life* and part of that is enjoying the odd treat - within limits and in moderation. No point killing yourself to stay alive if you can't enjoy your life at all. That's my view.

My god, I do not realize that your HD guys have to "spoil" yourselves after each lab... I eat whatever I like EACH DAY, no any restriction. I guess this is one of the big reasons to go with PD.
