In trouble

Well, positive thing bout this is I had my bday celebration! but i was a bit daft and drank too much. I never really thought about having to survive the weekend. Some friends met me in the bar down from uni after my deadline on friday and I was bought a cocktail - beforehand i could drink loads of alcohol without even feeling tipsy but this one went right to my head and i lost my inhibitions and agreed to another and then a third. Was feeling rather drunk on the train home and very jolly but over the weekend i felt awful! I could hardly breath, i ruined my family day out and we had to stay in and I got in quite a bit of trouble today when i went for my appointment - along the lines of, you've just turned 21 but your risking throwing all that away. I don't tend to get swelling much but I am still feeling horrible "big" today. I feel so guilty about all of this, and that annoys me - because all i was trying to do was have a good time.

Don't feel guilty, we are all human, and therefore make mistakes. The important thing to remember is how you felt during and after your night out.

Jenny hun... how often do you turn 21? Once.

You know what the deal is and that you need to be good with your fluids. So you had one blow out. OK you had trouble breathing - a sure sign that yes, you are overloaded... did you have D today? Did they get all the fluid off? How much were you over?

The thing is even if they didn't get all the fluid off in one session they can do it over a number of sessions.

You're not a regular boozehound and you're clearly not going to go out and do THAT again anytime soon after how you felt. While I understand why they came down on you a bit at your appointment(do you mean dialysis by that?) because yes, if you'd had WAY too much then you could have gotten into serious trouble, and they want you to be aware of that so you don't make it a habit, I think they should cut you some slack for being compliant the rest of the time, and you only turn 21 once.

Don't beat yourself up over this! You're OK and you had a good time!! Now you will remember that on dialysis spirits tend to affect us more than they used to - I am like you I used to drink triple vodka shots and all the rest of it and be fine... these days I sniff one and I'm leering at the nearest girl (oh wait, I do that anyway!  )

Seriously. you had a good time out for your 21st - a special time in any young person's life. You know it's bad for you and you won't be making a habit of it. Get the fluid off and get on with things (like chasing that young man.... ).

You will be OK. I am confident about it.

Are you dead?  Did the evening kill you?  Oh...I guess it didn't because you are posting.  Hmmm...that tells me that your overindulgence did nothing more than remind you not to do that again!  But you know what?  You probably will do that again because you are young and very human, and put those two together and you get someone who will make the occasional mistake.  As long as you can live to tell about it, then don't beat yourself up too much.  Still, we are concerned about the wellbeing of all of our members, and all of us hope that you will be careful with yourself because you are sorta special...

Glad to hear you had a good birthday anyway !!! I think any of us would have done the same if we were 21 ! (or 31 or 41  )  Sometimes you've just got to live a little !! My nurses are suprised to know i dont drink ! (only because of the fluid issue and said , you should go and have a pint ..lol it will do you good and its not that much to pull off you next session !)

I have a slightly different take on the guilt thing Jenny.  Don't spend too long guilting yourself but do remember how wretched you felt over the weekend so that next time you can maybe stop earlier, hold on to the good tipsy feeling and not have to pay too high a price.  I know lots of people who think that when we're young it's OK to go too far with any number of things but I've never bought that myself.  Wisdom can come early if we only use some common sense (as rare as that item is in actual fact) and for us with kidney disease difficulty breathing is too serious to visit too often if ever.

This isn't a lecture because it sounds as though you know all this anyway but there is a lesson to be taken away for next time.  I'm glad you enjoyed the evening while it was happening but I'm sorry you had to pay for it afterwards.   

PS.  I've only ever had one hangover...I was 15...never forgot it and never will.

I have learned my lesson - but i also dont feel as guilty now. It helps knowing there are those out there that know what it is like and sympathise rather that get angry and judgemental. funny thing is, i used to quite like having hangovers, it was an excuse to sit about all day and do nothing - but if i never feel like i did this weekend id be very happy! thanks for the support and advice everyone

Jenny, just chalk it up as a leaning experience. You now know the consequences of your actions. Just learn from your experience and try not to forget it. We have all had some sort of experience of this type, may not be fluid, but some sort of life experience.
 
It's important to have fun now and then, just have to do some things in moderation.

Jenny...belated      Glad you had a good time, sorry you felt bad afterwards.  Don't beat yourself up too much over it, just live and learn.  You're never too old or too young to learn a lesson out of about anything.  Hubby had a moment of weakness Friday night and had Taco Bell tacos...talk about sodium wrapped in a tortilla shell...he put on over 5k when normally he is under 2.5k.  He learned that Taco Bell will have to be a rare treat for him....
