I started my dialysis a year ago when my creatinine was at 3.9. My wife keeps thinking that it is too soon to be on dialysis as she worries about infection.

I did ask my doctor why I was on dialysis so soon and was never get a clear answer. He kept saying that it was not only based on the creatinine but how I felt. I think at that time I was at 18% (don't remember the term but it has to do with how much the kidney can process the waste product..)

So just curious on what is your creatinine number when you start dialysis..

I first saw a nephrologist when I was at 18% GFR (glomerular filtration rate).  At that time he prescribed Zocor for my high blood pressure.  One month to the day later I was in the hospital with rhabdomyolisis (because of the Zocor), and was immediately put on dialysis.  When I got out of the hospital my GFR was 11%.  Slowly it declined over the next 6 years until I am now at 4% GFR.

I started when my creatine hit 6 and I was waking up nauseated every morning.  To me it seems that 3.9 is too early but it depends on how you were feeling also.

Sorry for my ignorance, but how exactly do you calculate creatinine?
Mike is 26, 69kg, 5ft 11, last creatinine level was around 1200, or something.. [I should really know this! Lol]

My level was 6.4 and i was so sick, I was at the Mayo Clinc and I had a perma-cath placed for the first time there.  I went from a 2.4 to 6.4 in a matter of days. I too was waking up sick and feeling like I was going to throw up and my lactic levels were high blood gas were bad, tired all the time, after I started D I felt so much better, well until I started getting all these infections

I was fortunate enough to never have to do dialysis, but my creatinine was at 5.1 at the time of transplant and my GFR had been at 7% for months prior.  My doctor also said that as long as I was feeling good we could wait, but he was watching my numbers closely.  I just never felt bad.  Tired, but not bad.  I was very fortunate in that regard.

In June 2008 I went on a cruise (slept through the entire thing).
In Oct 2008 I went to the IHD meet n greet in Las Vegas.
On Nov 5, 2008 I transplanted.

During all that time my GFR was 7% and my creatinine was creeping up.  He didn't want to start me too early, but didn't want me to start too late.  It's tricky apparently.  He was holding a bed for me at nocturnal diaylsis since March 2008.

Lady Noir. There is a bit of confusion when we discuss creatine clearance on this forum because I think whatever the figure is in the USA  they take off 2 zeros. eg. Creat. 1000 = 10 US

Mine was 590 when I started dialysis or 5.9 US calculation. Also I think the urea calibrations are different too.

My hubby's creatinine was 15.2 the day he started.  Is averages 7-9 pre and 2-4 post.

He felt very poorly, especially after having AV Graft surgery.  The month wait for dialysis was hell on him and I was on pins and needles the whole time because I thought he was going to die. I want to apologize here and now to everyone who talked to me during that period...can you please tell me again what you said?  Tee he he.  I am joking but just barely.  He felt awful.  Now he feels GREAT!!!   :clap;

the US uses a different scale, 1200 umol/l is really high for a woman and high for a man (becuase men haave more muscle mass they usually have higher levels of creatnine). the US measures creatinine in mg/dl. UK and Aus and other measure in umol/l
To convert mg/dl of creatinine to umol/l, multiply by 88

so 1200 umol/l of creatinine is 13.6. I'm at 1100 which is 12.5 (i'm on D but it isn't working well).

Thanks Jennyc..

When Mike broke his hips [cause of leeched calcium due to hyperparathyriodism] his creatinine was about 500, which was high we were told.
Then 5 months later, before his parathyriodectomy it was sitting at about 800/900.
After the parathyriodectomy, it rose to 1400.
After diaylsis, 1300.. and now about 1200.

Last reading last week had me at 13.7 and I'm not on yet...  Feel a little tired, but not sick yet.  Catheter goes in Tuesday.  Low and slow PD begins shortly thereafter.

If I were a betting man, I'd bet I'm over 14 now.  I get more labs pulled on Monday and will know for sure.
