Once you receive a new kidney, do you still have to take hectorol, EPO, and such? My husband's concern is all the medication that he will be taking post-transplant. I told him that he will drop some also, like the ones I mentioned, and that over time the dosage of medications he is given will be reduced, so it won't be that many. Right now he is on phosphorus binders, renal vitamin, two medications for PTH, two for blood pressure, smallest dose of cholesterol medicine, EPO, and that's about it, I think.... not that much.

What are your experiences?

There are a variety of meds post transplant depending on the protocol your team follows.  I am a little over a year and heres a list of my meds

Prograf     am   pm                  Lopressor   am  pm
Myfortic    am   pm                  Nexium      pm
Prednisone  am                       Bactrim      am (M W F )
Sodium Bicarb   am    pm          Aspirin       am
Folic Acid   am                         Zocor        pm
Glipizide    am (for prednisone induced diabetes)
Arenesp as needed...havent had a shot since May!   wooohooo!

Its a bunch, but becomes part of the routine pretty quickly.

After a few weeks post transplant, they stopped my EPO, Binders, BP meds, Iron.  I'm 8 mos. post transplants and these are my current meds:

Prograf 2/2
Myfortic 3/3
Prednisone 5mg
Valcyte 1
Bactrim 1 MWF
Baby Aspirin 1
Vit D 1/mo.

Sometimes my Dr. will adjust the dosage depends on my blood work.
