I am scheduled to get my fistula tomorrow morning. Doctor says I'll start dialysis in two to six months. GFR is 12.
I'm 73, overweight, with coronary heart disease, high blood pressure and diabetes.
My main concern is trying to stay in the dietary guidelines when I start dialysis.
Thanks for being here. I discovered the website while looking for dialysis jokes...

the dietary guidelines re hard, no doubt about that. the diabetic diet and the renal diet contradict each other, what you can have on one, you can't have on the other. it stinks. but, it's do-able. work with your dietician if you can, he or she may be a help. and keep coming back here, there are recipe threads and a wealth of information. welcome.

Welcome to our community. So glad that you found us, and at just the right time - just before you start dialysis. There is much information and support here, as well as lots of fun (dialysis jokes included!). You will soon find out that this is not just a website, but a caring and sharing genuine family
What you must do is let us know how you are doing. How did the fistula surgery work out? We are still waiting to hear.
Do you really sing tenor??

When do you start squeezing? Just looked at my follow up instruction sheet last night (though its been nearly 4 months) and it said wait two week to exercise it. My disclaimer is always the same though. "I don't know nothing bout fistulas."

glad the surgery went well. wait as long as you can to use it, the longer you wait the better the results. (or so I was told)

I was told to start squeezing my exercise ball as soon as I could do it comfortably (pain wise).
Congratulations! Here's to a strong, healthy fistula!

Start sqeezing as soon as comfortable. Report any swelling, heat or redness to the Dr. It will be swollen, and red at first, but anything more than initially seen needs to be reported. Good Luck... Fistulas are fabulous.
