Town Adds Ammonia to Water, Notifies Dialysis Patients05/21/2009
COLUMBIA, Mo.—The city of Columbia began notifying residents that it will be adding ammonia to its already chlorinated water this summer to create chloramines to reduce the previously elevated level of Trihalomethanes in its drinking water, reported KBIA 91.3 radio station.
Chloramated water can present problems for dialysis patients; however Columbia Water and Light is notifying dialysis centers of the change.
Dialysis centers say their machines are equipped with filters that prevent chloramines from reaching the bloodstream. The city is contacting patients receiving treatment in their homes to discuss precautionary measures.
