Do you ever feel you've loss sex appeal (assuming you had it in the first place) because of being on dialysis? How do you deal with body image issues such as fistulas, dry skin, distended stomachs (if you dialyse over night) when trying to appeal to the opposite sex?

Going through life tied to a chair!

Obviously you are a guy.  And your problem might be trying to get "Miss America" when you may have to lower your standards.  Start thinking with your head.   The one on your shoulders! There are a lot of nice women out there "on dialysis" that are smart and loving.

Yes I know I do. I am always seeing woman looking at my snake of a fistula. Plus I am in a wheelchair so that makes them think I probably can't get an erection (I am in a wheelchair due to broken hips) so that makes me self conscious. But luckily in my situation I met my wife about a year before my dialysis career started, so I really don't care what other women think of me. But still I am a man and I do get self conscious.

As for lowering your standards as "Rerun" mentioned well there may some truth to that. You may need to be more realistic in the types of women who would be interested in you.

By the way welcome to the board and I hope you come and post often to help us get this site going. As you can see we are a new site and we need regular posters. Please do me a favor and go to the "Introduce Yourself" section and make a NEW topic to introduce yourself to the others. let us know your story and your background. Read some of the others introductions to get an idea of what I am talking about. Again welcome to the board.

Rerun, hi, what's "Miss American"? I am from England. Is it like blonde hair, blue eyes chicks? Sure, yeh, everyone likes blondes. I wouldn't say my standards are high, they're pretty much umm...normal. Pretty for me is like Monica Bellucci and ugly is like Renee Zellweger. No offense, but I don't fancy the women I have seen on dialysis (and I have seen a lot of them). I feel, just b/c am on dialysis doesn't mean I have to fancy a dialysis woman. I am friendly with some dialysis women, but I don't want to have sex with them or anything. Is that you in the pic? You look decent.

Epoman, hi, it is lucky you met your wife pre-dialysis b/c those of us who haven't are pretty much, excuse my French, f*cked. The thing is Epoman, I'm a perfectionist and I don't want to lower my standards. I like my standards as they are. Why do I have to get the "not so pretty ones"? Life isn't fair. Thanks for the welcome, Epoman.

I wish you would go to the "Introduce Yourself" section and tell us your story. All I know is your possiblely on CAPD and 24 years old. Anyway you mention life is not fair and I believe truer words were never spoken. Life is very unfair and sometimes life will beat the hell out of you.

Also I do not mean you have to get the "not so pretty ones" you need to re-evaluate YOUR beauty. Bottomline is unless you are handsome or have alot of money, pretty girls like handsome guys. Plain and simple. Don't use dialysis as an excuse either your handsome or your not.  ;)

Epoman is right.  Don't use dialysis as an excuse. Sounds like you may be too fussy. Give women the chance to meet the real you.If they don't want to know you because of your renal failure, they are probably not worth knowing. Looks aren't everything. I myself was on PD for 8 months and it did take a while to feel comfortable in front of my husband, but eventually it was o.k. I am lucky to allready have a partner. Surely there are some pommie girls who are nice. Good luck with it all. Liz ;D

You can easily have sex as a dialysis patient but I can't answer some of those questions as I am not a man. But I just wanted to say that you can talk to your dialysis social worker or if you don't want to you can just remember that you may have less energy or sexual interest depending on your hemoglobin level / hemocrit and iron levels. Plus in general we all feel more often crappy than healthy people.

Sorry I can't help you more. I find with sex I get tired easily .. so instead of 3 hour marathons it may be easier to have a lot more quickies ;)

Sex? What's sex?

I am so tired when I get home from teaching and dialysis three days a week you can imagine what happens at home.  Nothing.  The sex drive is busted, broken, gone with the wind.

Not only can low hemoglobin levles reduce libidio, but also, the high toxin levels which dialysis cannot clear often cause the pituitary gland to become unable to signal the testes and ovaries to produce sex hormones, which can cause impotence and infertility in men, premature menopause in women, and low or totally absent sex drive in both genders.  The low hemoglobin problem can be partially corrected with increased EPO, but since most patients cannot be brought up all the way out of anemia, this remains a negative influence on libido.  The low hormone levels can be corrected with hormone supplementation, but it seems that most nephrologists, who already feel themselves overworked just keeping their dialysis patients alive, never bother doing this.

For men there is the further problem that the accelerated development of arteriosclerosis and atherosclerosis during dialysis, as well as the influence of dialysis in promoting neurological disease, can cause erectile dysfunction independent of low libido.  In some patients this can be corrected by Viagra and related drugs, though many require papaverine injections or surgical implants.
