Tonight I had a Dorito and Miralclwhip sandwich.  I crave those every know and again. Also a fruit cup and some carrots and ranch.                               ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ So Good     :D  :lol;

Dorito and miracle whip?!? eww! Sounds like my other half with his potato chip, corn chip, twisties etc sandwhiches.
I do love a hot chip sandwhich with tomato sauce or vinegar and lots of marg.  Or hot chips and gravy on a bread roll.
What is a fruit cup?

Mmm I love chips on sandwiches, although mine usually consist of deli meat and cheese and doritos on top of that.   :)

What is a fruit cup?

its just a little cup you buy at the store that has pieces of fruit in them.  In light or heavy syrup.  i get light syrup.  I like the ones with cherry, pineapple and pieces of peaches in it.

Goolynina, we have got to get together for sandwiches. Maybe a picnic halfway between our houses? I am with you on the Miracle Whip. Love it. Use it on my sandwiches. My hubby hates it. LOL.  Can you believe Doritos are upsetting my tummy now??? It sucks.  The body wants veggies now. I am sitting here eating a bowl of snap peas microwaved with a little pepper and onion powder over them.  Yummy. Weird for me.

What's for supper? Nothing! We went to Alpine Village today for about the first time in 3-4 years and partook of their European Brunch.  Excellent but filling.  Lots and lots of meat as you would expect.  I feel like a sausage!  Afterwards we went to the beer garden for Octoberfest and I had my yearly two sips of beer from my wife's cup.  Don't expect to be intoxicated anytime soon.

I like apple slices with Dijon mustard on them.  Something about the sweetness of the apple and the hotness of the mustard I really crave.  Pre ESRD I used pears but apples are more renal friendly.

My aunt makes cookies with uncooked ramens - something like melted chocolate and peanut butter, then mix the crushed noodles with butterscotch chips and and assortment of nuts and m&M's,  then dropped onto waxed paper, I think.   >:D  (Not healthy for any diet!)

My latest concoction - chocolate covered grapes.  Melt dark choc and a dab of peanut butter, pour over chilled, picked grapes in a bowl with a lid.  Shake like mad.  Open bowl, pour in some powdered sugar, cover and shake again.  They turn into fussy-looking little bon-bon things that look like you spent hours making them.  So not good for my blood sugar, but oooooh so yummy.  My new favorite pot luck dish.

I confess to having quesidillas for dinner - and lots of salsa.  And lots of phoslo.  (Well, I haven't actually started dialysis yet.  I figure I better enjoy these guilty pleasures now, before I have monthly meetings with a dietitian to tell me how bad I'm being.)

jbeany, as long as you are aware that phosphate binders dont help with the potassium side of foods, which is important when you do start dialysis!

yeah, I know amber, that salsa is about to become a big no-no, isn't it?   :P

I've been reading food labels for carbs for a long time.  Now I'm just going to have to start looking for the potassium, too.  The OJ I had for my insulin reaction last night had 450 per serving - the apple juice in the fridge says 250.  Guess I won't be getting OJ for reactions anymore.   I have been told to cut down on potatoes and bannas because I needed to cut down on potassium a bit.  Odd, though - no one ever mentioned the OJ or the tomatoes to me before.  I only drink juice when my blood sugar is low, so the OJ hasn't been a real problem for me, but heavens, I eat tomatoes with everything!

Yeh juice and tomatoes are a big no no. I used to eat tomatoes like an apple, and mum would go off at me because she said it was wasteful lol Now days tomatoes taste like crap so I dont eat them as much. You can still have a little bit, and a little bit of juice, you just need to be aware of quantities and how much potassium is in it. Have a look at the potassium thread over in the diet and recipes section for ideas. Ive said this many times before but when Im on conventional hemo I just cant even go near a tomato without my potassium going up. Makes it hard to have a healthy diet when you are so restricted. The renal meals you get here in hospital are too bad, you get juice, tomato, coffee etc, but it is all added up for you and portion controlled. That is a good way of getting an idea of what to eat.
Perhaps if you have a hypo you might want to have a glass of strong cordial instead of the OJ, just to be on the safe side. How much OJ would you normally have?

About a cup of OJ for an insulin reaction - at least a mild one.  Still - that's 450 of potassium according to the brand I've got here.  If I have to have twice that, I'd be in trouble in a hurry.  OJ always works best for me when my sugar is low, but I guess I'll have to stick with my second choice from now on and use apple juice.

My other option is Smarties.  They are cheap, individually wrapped, and they work as fast as most glucose tablets without tasting like chalk.  No sodium, according to the label.  It's mostly sugar and flavoring, so I don't think they've got an potassium either.

Smarties contain chocolate, which contains phosphate and potassium. How many smarties would you eat? I honestly think the better option would be to have cordial or the glucose lollies which both contain no potassium and no phosphate that Im aware of.

No chocolate in our Smarties.  They are little tart candies.  Yummy.  What are your Smarties like, Amber?

Sandman told me how Smarties in his State are like sweet tarts. Odd :P

yup - the Smarties I use are the ones like sweet tarts - only a bit more powdery and faster to chew and dissolve.  I like the taste of sweet tarts better, but so does my husband.  He ends up eating all the sweet tarts and then I don't have anything when my blood sugar is low.  So I started buying smarties instead - they have a longer shelf life at my house.   ;D
