I am getting sore red patches where I get taped during and after dialysis, just the last 2 weeks. Today we decided to start trying plastic tape and it still seems irritated.  I took the tape off after 2 hrs as usual and put Antibiotic Cream on, then a large dressing and plastic tape on the edges...started leaking..held that down and now skin is irritated where the new tape is.  Does anyone have any ideas? I don't know if it's the bandaids I've been using lately or what.     :waiting;

2 Step fistula, 05/08-elevated 06/08, using mid August.
Aug 5, 08, trained NxStage and Home on 9/3/2008.
Fistulagram 09/2008. In hospital 10/30/08, Bowel Obstruction.
Back to RAI-Latrobe In Center. No home hemo at this time.

No transplant.  Not yet, anyway.  Only decided to be listed on 11/9/06. Inactive at the moment.  ;)
I make films.

Just the facts: 70.0 kgs. (about 154 lbs.)
Treatment: Tue-Thur-Sat   5.5 hours, 2x/wk, 6 hours, 1x/wk
Dialysate flow (Qd)=600;  Blood pump speed(Qb)=315
Fresenius Optiflux-180 filter--without reuse
Fresenius 2008T dialysis machine
My KDOQI Nutrition (+/ -):  2,450 Calories, 84 grams Protein/day.

The plastic tape irritates my skin too.  I don't like the paper tape because it doesn't stay put.  I've been using cloth tape that I buy at CVS pharmacy store.  I love it.  It doesn't irritate my skin.

Cloth Tape at CVS..thanks Rookiegirl....I will check that out tomorrow, the plastic was just burning.  The tech today said to be careful of plastic as she has seen it tear skin.
Thanks Zach..I'm also irritated by papertape.
My son just gave me a suggestion that I'm doing for tonight.  Antibiotic, gauze and an arm elastic wrap.  I'm trying that as the needlesite is still wanting to ooze.  I have been using the fabric bandaids and I'm beginning to think it's the glue or whatever on the tapes/bandaids.  Grrrrr....hope the cloth tape works.

Plastic tape sucks. It pulls skin off of me.  Paper tape seems better, however there are two types of paper tape they tell me.  I hate the kind that sticks and will not come off.  I am having tape gook after I pull the tape off of my arm.

3M makes a tape named Medipore, it is hypoallergenic, 2 inch wide and is scored every 2 inches making it very easy to tear off at the length you want.
Sharon had a Nephrostomy tube in her back to drain the kidney for 5 years, I changed the dressing often and used the Medipore tape and she never had any irritation at all from it, the plastic was a disaster on her skin, and the paper type, while it worked better,  still showed irritation.

Hey I didn't read all the replys but even with paper take it was actually tearing my skin off with it, and now they gave me this stuff called, Mepatac, and I absolutly love it, I am on nocturnal and usually end up sleeping on my arm with the needle and this tape is great, comes off so easy yet no rash at all!

I think the fabric bandaids are worse than the cheap plastic ones.  The plastic ones come off easier.

Maybe it's not the tape or the bandaids. Perhaps it's the product being used to clean your arm.   My arm used to be absolutely raw, and I thought it was the tape and/or the bandaid.  It burn and rash in the shape of where the tape or bandaid would be on my arm.  But, it turned out that the wipes I was using to clean my arm was the actual culprit.  I switched to Betadyne, and no more problem.

Hi G....

My mum's on CAPD, but was on haemo, and she gets very irritated by most tape...

The only one that seems to suit her is Hypafix... Soft cloth, and the adhesive while strong enough to hold the tubes in place, it's not so strong as to make your epidermis part company with the rest of your anatomy!!!...

Hope you get over this difficulty soon... God knows the dialysis in itself is enough to be dealing with!...

G-ma my skin used to get pretty ugly from the tape also, then i tried these skin protectant prep pads. you can get from the pharmacy. They protect your skin from adhesive trauma no matter what kind of tape you use.

A word of caution about the Skin Prep Wipes, Sharon had a bad reaction from them, after the nurse used them, she developed blisters under the tape where the wipes had been used, we were not sure what caused it, but it happened again the next time they used them, since then we are vigilant about the use of them and no more problems.......

Hubby can only use paper tape.  The plastic tape makes his arm sore. He has never tried the cloth tape so don't know how that would work.

Hello Gma, I get a spray to protect my skin from my PD crew, it's made by 3M ,the spray is called
      "Cavillon" No sting barrier film.  The sprays seams to do what it's intended for.

Thanks SR...I will be checking on this with RAI tomorrow.  Hey all with cycles...I love them...centuries ago when I was in my 20's...I had my own bike, a low Yamaha but mostly rode with my husband..I never got a liscense....I miss riding..my oldest now has a Harley and youngest is working toward that.  Enjoy them and your summer.

When I start getting tape irritation, I use a product called Vetwrap. It is a breathable, thin, flexible, plastic-like gauze that sticks to itself (really well). We used it on animals, hence the name vetwrap, but there are "human" versions too. CVS sells it. There's a link to it below, but you can get it in the store as well. It comes in 1" or 2" wide. The vetwrap comes in all kinds of cool colors and even one with paw prints though if you're so inclined!

G-Ma,
lately Nanay had that red irritations, then due to her thinning skin, it blistered. Now she's using Tegaderm tape. Her vascular doctor told her not to treat the irritation with any antibiotic cream, just wash it daily with a dab of dextrose water, as the doctor was concerned it may infect her access, the irritation is close to it. It's been good so far.
Hope you find a solution.
