Another Chapter in my book...

Well hello fellow ihds!  It has been a while since I have been on...and I apologize for that.  The last time I was on, I had just had my pd catheter placed and was having pain.  Well, we got that issue resolved and I started pd training, the beginning of December.  My first day of training everything went well, and I was driving home and all of a sudden got nauseas and very hot.  As I recall it was about 40 that day but I rolled down the windows and turned the a/c all the way up.  I made it home and decided to lay down.  About 3 hours later I woke up and my abdomen was killing me.  So needless to say my wife and I called the pd clinic and they said to head to the er.  So here we go again.  Well, this time they said it was peritonitis and if it occurred again we would have to remove the cath.  It cleared up and we started training again.  Everything was going great up until around the new year.  I noticed I was having a little difficulty breathing and was retaining a little fluid.  So, we went up to the 4.25s and pretty much sucked me dry.  It didn't really help my breathing so they wanted me to see my neph.  He felt that I probably had some fluid around my lung so he sent me for an x-ray.  Well, he was correct, so they sent me to the vascular center to remove it.  About 3 weeks ago I went in and they removed 2 liters from around my right lung.  Well...with me nothing is simple....so about a week and a half ago, I started having trouble again.  By the way, the fluid was dialysate.  Well, my neph sent me for another x-ray and they said it looked worse than last time.  So Friday, I went and had 3.7 liters removed from around the right lung again.  I am surprised I was breathing at all.     So, my neph and I decided to abandon pd for now, and tomorrow I will start hemo.  I never wanted to do hemo, but right now, it seems to be the lesser of two evils.  Of course, after hearing all of your hemo stories, we shall see.

Sorry to hear about all this Wayne.  My husband's aunt had the same problem with the fluid around her lungs and ended up doing hemo.  Maybe you can try home hemo.

hoping you are better now. Nanay had the same problem, fluid in her lungs. What's helping her right now is eating 2 hard boiled white eggs every morning and regular back clapping. Since we did that, so far the fluid is never on her lungs. Hope this works for you too.

I have done pd, and had many many problems.  Hemo is a walk in the park except for the driving and annoying people

Hubby had problems with PD as well and is doing much better on hemo. check out nocturnal home hemo or short daily home hemo.  Both work really well!!

Glad to see you posting again Wayne.  Sorry to hear about all the problems you've been having. Hopefully the Hemo will go well and you'll be feeling better soon.  Hey who knows, maybe down the road you can go back on PD, if you decide you want that...maybe you'll like Hemo better and not want to back either.

Hey Wayne,

Sorry to hear what you have been going through.
I am soon to start PD.  Did they tell you how your dialysisfluid got out of the stomach lining and around your lungs?  Does your stomach lining have a hole in it?  does it just seep out? Did you carry the liquid with you during the days or where you dry?
Just curious if they gave you any answers you may want to pass on.

Best of luck with your hemo.  Did you already have a fistula or will they go through your chest.  Sorry cant think of what that is called.

Thanks everyone.  Well, I went this morning for my first round and all went well.     I was on for 3 1/2 hours.  My fistula worked well and took the first "sticks" with ease.

And P&K,
They seem to think that the fluid went up through a hole in my diaphram.  Unfortunately, once mine got up there it wouldn't come back out.

I hope things go better for you this time Wayne! It sounds as though the hemo couldn't be much worse than the PD though.
