Grandma passed on
«

January 12, 2009, 03:37:07 AM »
I want to thank everyone for all the support and love that was sent our way. Grandma passed on today. She was pain free thanks to the wonderful Hospice nurse we had. It was the hardest evening of my life but she is now pain free and in heaven giving Grandpa all kinds of heck, just like she used too. Yesterday morning she told the nurse that she was the queen of the house. We did our best to make her comfortable and follow her wishes. Her Dr came to see her before she went unresponsive and I had to laugh as he told her she was full of piss and vinegar. That is what she used to tell me when I was little. Iguess I know where I got it from now! They brought in a hosp. bed on thursday. Grandma slept in it one night. On Friday morning she insisted on getting in her recliner even though we had to carry her as her legs were no longer strong enough to walk. On friday night I was going to carry her back to her bed to tuck her in for the night and she did not want to go to her room to sleep. I am so glad that i let her stay in her recliner in the living room as later that night she started yelling and seeing things. I think that was the scariest night of my life! We called the nurse and she told us to give her 1ml of holodoral. the first dose did not work.It actually took 3 doses before it kicked in. Once that kicked in she started having a lot more pain so I called the nurse again and they upped her oxy to every hour and ordered her a fennagen pain patch. After all that was under control (4am) she rested comfortably for a couple of hours. The nurse told me to call family and tell them to come say their goodbyes because she did not feel that it would be very long. I had to do a lot of fighting and yelling(outside of course) to get everyone to come but as of 5pm on sunday they had all been there. When she woke up saturday am we had a nice talk for about an our. I went to get her another cup of coffee and when i brought it back she was unresponsive. She was still breathing and I am pretty sure that she could still here us. I called everyone again an threatened them this time. I told them that if they did not come it would be on their conscious for the rest of their life. The majority made it with in a few hours after that. She just had to wait on one that was coming from out of town and he got here sunday at 6 pm. he pulled it close. Grandma passed at 7:55 pm. The strange thing is she was responding to me and my children and husband on sunday morning. She even told all of us that she loved us. I was holding her hand and my children and husband were in the room when she went.We all agree that we would not change any of that part if we had to do it all over again! it was a very special time for us and we will treasure it always. The only real issue there was with my family was my cousin Jimmy yelling that he was not paying for any part of the funeral and I told him that he would not have to worry about that because i was going to give Grandma the best funeral that anyone could ever have and that I could care a less about how he feels or his money. At this pont i feel he has been very selfish as he only lives 2 miles away and has not seen grandma for over a year! Even when she was in the hospital he would not come see her. We will all miss her very much but she died exactly how she wanted at home, in her recliner, with her family all around her. Who could ask for more. That is exactly how I want to go! You guys were so much help for me and if I can ever help someone the way that you did me i will. Thank you for all the kind words and help!

Oh Gabby I am so sorry for your loss.. but it sounds like through the trials and scary nights you saw her go in peace and had a chance to say goodbye.. and that is important... I am sure she was happy to have family there and in her own home. I am sure while she is up there giving grandpa heck she is also looking down and apprieciating all the effort you went to for her. She is pain free now which is the main thing. Thank you for letting us know...

Condolences to you and your family. It sounds like grandma had a very positive influence on your life and you were lucky to have each other.
And your kids got to see what it takes to care for someone at the end of their life. Hugs to you Gabby.
