needles do not just fall out
«
on:
December 12, 2008, 04:41:10 AM »
okay so I had a band on Tuesday -- not proud of it at all -- the neph doc wanted me to b/c I just can't lose 40 lbs
I was not at the BMI but with PKD --- I was approved
it is an out patient procedure unless you are on dialysis
I was to have D wed. morning at 6:30 pm -- well they were three hours late
my husband had to get back to conroe for a basketball game --- both teams were undefeated - so he requested an early time
I had to have this done in Houston b/c of insurance reasons
the nurse stuck me and I commented that it just did not feel the same
she was an easily agitated person
I was asleep and so was my husband and these bells go off--- which we are all used too
they went off for longer than usual
the nurse comes in yelling
I had blood all over the place
she said I infiltrated
I said no, there was not any pain
none--- zero
my needles had come out -- both of them
and I never felt a thing
well long story a little shorter
I would not let her stick me again and she was very aggressive to me about it and got out those little shots for pain
(which hurt me -- I do not use them - I use cream - she did not get near me, she tried and I warned her to step back with those needles)
the hospital hires a company to do dialysis when needed
the head nurse was mad
the company sent another nurse to replace this one 4 hours later
I had been on for 1 hour and 10 minutes when the needles fell out
my husband slept during two hurricanes-- he is not easy to wake up - the nurse tried blaming my husband who "hears" bells all the time (a coach)
but on the bright side
we drove back to Houston at night in a beautiful snow flurry
oh, and that D nurse said I had to let her stick me - she was the only one who could
NO! ( where is rerun when you need her- peeking in my ss presents- I hope)
ah, I forgot and this nurse tried to stop my bleeding with no gloves on
and the head nurse yelled at her
what a day
and then after treatment I had to wait a few hours for my husband to come get me
and the hopital told me to get dressed and wait downstairs
I said NO!
I am not leaving this bed until I see my husband's face.
I felt like crap anyways.........

Needles do not just fall out... That nurse needs to be fired.
1. Trying to cover up
a. It's an infiltration.
b. It's your husband's fault.
No. She's the professional. It is her job to get the needles right, to listen for alarms, and to recognize her own incompetence - not an infiltration, the needles were not properly secured.
2. She has risked your life.
a. You could have bled to death.
b. You are now at risk from her touching your access without gloves.
Good for you Twirl. You stuck to your guns.

That is not true.
It doesnt take much to pull a needles out while sleeping, and inadvertent tug or catching the lines on the chair while moving will pull them out.

I had a needle almost fall out once, but it was when they were taking out the needles, they took off the tape and reached to get some gauze and it almost shot out. Never when it was taped well. (but maybe it has happened to one tech before...he tapes me up enough for 3 pt's amount of tape, cause he's worried my needles will fall out)

Hubby does nocturnal hemo and has been sleeping with needles in his arm for over 2 years and I have no fear of a needle coming out. The needles must not have been taped properly or something . And for 2 to come out something was definitely wrong. In center it is the nurse's responsibility to listen for alarms not the patients!!! That is the nurse's job!! If the patient had crashed they would not have heard the alarm anyway!! Get out the
and find out what happened. I would be very pissed with that nurse or tech whoever it was for the poor care. They are getting paid to do a job!!!
Glad you are ok twirl. You could have bled to death because of this!!!

no excuse is acceptable, wright a complaint to the hospital administration and one to the company that supplies the dialysis personnel. it's one thing to make a mistake it something else entirely not to admit it. whenever i'm hospitalized and have dialysis the tech never leaves my room.

It makes me incredibly angry when I hear stories about incompetence, especially when they're at this level. When you don't do your job correctly, people die. The fact that your alarm was going off for a while before anybody helped you proves the level of care there is an abomination.
I had a friend in the East Bay who had to have a meeting in front of the board of directors of her clinic because staff were asleep ignoring alarms, dragging lines on the floor and not using gloves. A number of patients witnessed these atrocities, so she had valid witnesses to the whole affair.
Three people were fired.
Maybe if their life was on the line every time they stepped into a clinic they'd give proper attention to their job.

This makes me so mad
. How dare she make excuses and blame your husband for not hearing the alarm. I'm sorry, but if that was Rob, heads would be rolling so damn fast. There is no room for incompetent nurses/techs in dialysis (anywhere actually). This is your lifeline and how dare she play with it. She shouldn't be working in a field like this, ridiculous.
.
Twirl - I am glad you are ok. This nurses ass needs to kicked hard!

She didn't tape you up properly, it's almost impossible to have them "fall out" if there taped properly. Also, it is REQUIRED for in hopital dialysis to be monitored, 1:1, or 1:2, but always in the room. You could have bled to death in under 4 minutes time. There are only 5-6 liters of blood in the body. There is 250 cc, a fourth of one liter in the lines and dialyzer already out of your body. Blood pump at 400/500 cc per minute, and now your not connected. Do the math. This needs to go to Your Neph, the hospital Administrator, AND especially whatever company is contracted to dialyze in that hospital. She should certainly lose her job, and possibly a severe reprimand on her lisence, if not removal of it. The Nursing Board doesn't play with this kind of stuff.

I have been in the hospital 3 times in the past year while on dialysis. My dialysis technician is not allowed to leave the room for the entire time I am on dialysis. So I was surprised reading your post that she wasn't in the room. Nurse Wratchet says it is required so I would definitely question why she had left the room and then tried to blame you or your husband! Needles do not fall out if taped properly.
Good luck with the lapband! My sister has one and it has worked for her but she has to be very vigilant about what she eats.

When I was in clinic, I had a needle fall out once. I was wide awake, and not moving around a lot. I was watching TV, when I suddenly noticed that my arm felt wet. I looked over and saw blood everywhere - huge pool on the floor, in my shoes that were sitting next to the bed - everywhere!! The machine never alarmed, it just kept pumping. I yelled for my nurse, who was there in less than a second. Besides asking if I had been moving around, they never tried to blame me. They just kept apologizing and asking me if I was OK. I left the clinic, looking like a gun-shot victim. I had to place a blanket on my car seat so that I could drive home without getting blood all over my car. It didn't work, I still had quite a mess. I called my husband on the way home and told him I was going directly into the basement to the laundry room, and could he have a change of clothes in there for me. I also gave him a warning about how I looked, so he didn't freak out. He made sure my daughter didn't see me come in, but he did freak out. He was very upset that the clinic let me drive home after losing so much blood. I still do not know what happened, it seemed taped up like normal - I swear she used a roll of tape on me each session. I am happy to be home now. Stuff like that does not happen.

Rob's needle fell out once at home, as Nurse Wratchet said, he didn't tape it properly. Let me tell you how the blood just spurted out, it was really scary and freaked Rob out completely. Now, he makes sure he tapes them down extremely well. The both of us looked like we just slaughtered a pig and we caught it right away. I can't imagine if we didn't....

One day I had a needle explosion and had red blood all over my shirt. I considered walking into the house and announcing I was a goner and sinking slowly to the floor. I know, not nice, but would have been funny as all get out!
